Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Had to have Crown & Coke at the bar tonight coz... bar.

Now having a Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask & Coke. Yummy.

This is how one trolls the drinking thread.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

First, background: I drink whiskey-diets in the winter (a warm drink). I drink vodka-tonics in the summer (a clear, lighter drink).

What are the proper dates to transition back and forth?

Whenever you feel like it. And that's not a smart *** answer. If you feel like it's warm enough to break out the vodka, go for it. Feel a bit of a nip in the air, Ahhh... Whiskey.

Otherwise, you could follow the unofficial dates of summer - Memorial Day to Labor Day and adjust as needed.

Stop drinking whiskey on about June 29th, go back to whiskey on about July 5th.

It's similar to dark/light beers. Go with the temps/seasons. However, I drink whatever the hell I want whenever the hell I want. I do TEND to drink the lighter drinks, slow transition, as it gets warmer. as for whiskey, I am a "beast of bourbon." Even have the shirt to prove it. ;)

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

He stuck to beer and rum during the hiatus.

Well, that was the premise of the question, right? We're not stopping drinking here, we're just switching to vodka in the summer. (not something I'd recommend, but to each their own)

Personally, I drink mostly beer now. Still like whiskey, specifically single malts, but keep that to special occasions, mostly. On vacation I'll spread my wings a bit, drank plenty of rum in the Keys, as it seemed appropriate. Rum is great on a warm day, IMO. I'd prefer it over the proposed vodka.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

I've almost completely given up on drinking in the past year or so. I've never cared much for most liquors and to my horror I'm losing my taste for beer. My window had closed to the point where it was really just Marzens and other malty summer darks, and now I'm not even really enjoying those.

I won't miss drinking per se but I'm going to miss enjoying beer. It was fun. :(

For you Michiganders:

A place here in the Twin Cities is having a Founders' tap takeover. 13 taps, including KBS, CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout, last year's batch; it wasn't made this year), Project Pam, Nitro Rubaeus, and Mango Magnifico are the notables...so far. Cannot wait.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Full list of the takeover:

1. Founders Centennial IPA
2. Founders Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale
3. Founders All Day IPA
4. Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout
5. Founders Mango Magnifico
6. Founders Nitro Oatmeal Stout
7. Founders CBS Imperial Stout
8. Founders Mosaic Promise
9. Founders Nitro Rubaeus
10. Founders Azacca IPA
11. Founders Pale Joe Pale Ale
12. Founders Sumatra Mountain Brown
13. Founders Project Pam

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

Made a beer run yesterday...

Got a sixer of Blueberry Maple Stout by Saugatuck Brewing. This was... Different  Like the packaging implies, it's a blueberry pancake in a bottle. Not quite sure what to think of this. Initially it was interesting, but it became laborious to finish the bottle. I give them a "C" for ingenuity and being different, but not something that will be returning once the 6-er is gone.

Tallgrass Brewing Barrel Aged Vanilla Bean Buffalo Sweat - Finally came across this. I'm very impressed. I like the sweet, cinnamon toast like flavor in this. Very smooth beer. This is something an inexperienced beer drinker can pick up and run with, yet is still pleasing to an established palate. Probably only good for 1 can per sitting, but that can is enjoyable. "A-" for a final grade.

Didn't crack them, but also picked p a 4-pack of Breckenridge Vanilla Porter Nitro and a bottle of Saugatuck Brewing's Barrel Aged Neapolitan Milk Stout. Really curious about the Neapolitan. I really like the original.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

The Buffalo Sweat, was that with or without the added cinnamon? I loved both, but some have VERY differing opinions on the cinnamon one.

And aged Neapolitan? I've had the normal Neapolitan and I loved it.

I should report back for the Founders thing:

The CBS had a LOT more maple flavor than last year (this was last year's batch). Delicious. The oatmeal stout was wonderful, and one of the guys in our group mixed 50/50 Rubaeus/Oatmeal and it was GLORIOUS.

I had a pint of Saugatuck Blueberry Maple Stout at Burger Moes a few montgs ago. I really liked it, but still would probably be able to drink one in a sitting.

How maple-y are we talking? I think I need to find some of this.

If I remember correctly, it is pretty prominent. As in, it isn't subtle. I liked that, I like maple flavors, and I think they go will in a stout. I could easily see how many people would not like that added sweetness.

Good. I find that a lot of things that claim to be "maple" don't actually taste like maple. Looks like Saugatuck now has statewide distribution in Wisconsin (as of very recently). I remember I tried finding the Neapolitan Milk Stout a few years ago, and had to get it in Chicago. I've seen that recently at the frou frou grocery store by my mom's house, so I'll try there.

Re: EMERGENCY - I'm drinking and the old drinking thread is closed!

I'd say that the Blueberry flavor is more prominent than the Maple part, but the syrup component is very noticible. Like I said, it's a blueberry pancake in a bottle
