Guinness is very overrated. It's to the point that many people like Guinness for the fact that the beer has the name on it and they're told that they should like it. It's a very bland brew, many stouts surpass it that don't even receive half its acclaim.

I won't argue that it's overrated. But I do argue that it is a "bad" beer. I like it. It's a great gateway stout, it tastes good, and I can drink it at any time of the year without hesitation.

I've only ever had it two or three times, and it's never impressed me. The first time I was told that the bar didn't pour it correctly, and so I let it slide. The second time was from its special draught can, and the third was a tap pour. It wasn't ever something I'd spit out, but three times is enough when there are other options available. Give me a Buffalo Sweat hands down over Guinness.

*Technology has expanded the nitro/widget feature to bottles, most notably Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout. Left Hand delayed the patent on it, to keep the method secret, until they became known for that technology. Brilliant move on their part.

Its not. I just have functioning tastebuds. St. Clown is right, it isn't good beer. I have very rarely tasted a stout that is worse than it, maybe 2-3 ever.How high in the air IS your nose?

That is comparing apples to oranges. You don't like the style, you would think they're ****. Stouts are one of, if not my favorite style, but I think Guiness is ****. I am 100% serious when I say I've maybe had 2 stouts worse than Guiness, and I have tried hundreds of stouts. Hundreds.
Personally I think 99% of the sours out there are pure sh*, but that doesn't actually mean they are not quality sours.

Haven't had a Guiness in a bit, but I remember enjoying the experience back in the day when I had them on tap.

Well, I've tasted it once, and never ordered it again. Its probably a bit of both, since pretty much every other stout out there is better, I'll often have a better option if I want a stout. But at the same time, if you're in the bottom 5% of your style, doesn't that pretty much make you bad by definition?

From my experience, it isn't a bad beer, but it's nowhere near as good as its reputation or price point would lead you to expect. There are just far too many better choices out there for the same price or even less.
The brand has likely earned its reputation due to overseas sales, which I'm told get better batches than we do here. As the story was told to me, Guinness sends a different recipe to the USA than it does to Europe and Africa.

In other drinking news, streamlining my bar a bit over the past few months. Used to have some "top shelf" odds and ends (AE Rye, Corzo, Balvenie, etc.) on top of my fridge as my actual top shelf was occupied by sipping rums.
Killed a couple of rums that I won't restock and divided my rums amongst the 3 shelves - premium sippers, really good sippers and "rail" rums on the bottom.
Now my "top shelf" is more top shelf, if you catch my drift. About 6 or 7 rums along with a Cognac, a Scotch, a couple of tequilas, a bourbon, a rye and a whiskey.
Oh yeah, and my "rail" rums for mixing are Angostura 7, El Dorado 8, Plantation 5, Flor de Cana 4 (Light), Pusser's Blue, Gosling's Black Seal and Old Man Guava Berry. Wish any bar would have these as their premiums, let alone rails.
Of course, a bar would actually have to have a premium rum first.

What some may fail to remember is that getting a Guiness draft was at one time a real treat. 25 years ago, when you found a bar that had it, you were compelled to have one.
I remember the first time I did - an Irish bar somewhere in Chicago as we killed time before a wedding reception. At the time, it was sublime.
At one time, Guiness WAS stout beer - which is why their name recognition is what it is and a big part of why it's popular.

Guinness was the beer I drank in college when my friends were drinking **** (Bud Light) at the bar. It was the first beer I was allowed to drink (Irish grandpa used to let me sip the foam/head when I was a kid).

I think that this is the best description. As someone who does not prefer IPAs or lighter beers, it's often the best option at places like baseball games, etc. Like bbdl, stouts are my favorite and I've had many that are better, but am not always able to get them in public.

I'm not much of a Scotch guy but a local place has Johnny Walker Gold Reserve Limited for $34.99... MSRP lists at $85.99... Worth picking up just to have a bottle of Scotch around? Can I do better in the <$40 range?
