Elmira's Casey Tuttle

Re: Elmira's Casey Tuttle

Don't mean to hijack the thread or anything, but what is it with minor league teams moving to the Carolinas. The AHL's Albany River Rats are moving to North Carolina following the season, leaving the area pro hockey-less. Many folks in the area aren't incredibly pleased with the move as I'm sure people in the Johnstown area feel the same.

Also, congrats to Casey and Rusty, great to see more d3 players making it in the pros. What I'd pay to go see, however, would be Buffalo's Alan "the dancing goalie" Fritch.

There's talk of Albany getting another franchise...Billy Fuccillo was rumored as trying to buy a team and bring them to Albany to keep hockey in the area.

Although its not Albany, don't forget Glens Falls has a team in the Adirondack Phantoms still.

Yes, but the rats have been here for quite some time whereas the phantoms have only been here for a year. and the rats are making the postseason this year.

Seems to me there has been a franchise in one league or another in Glens Falls for a long time, and Glens Fall is on the way from VT to Albany. (Whatever that is worth)

Good God! Is there any thread that can run its course without linking it to VT?!?!?!?!

Re: Elmira's Casey Tuttle

Fine, but he doesn't get paid. :)

Players that sign ATO contracts DO get paid. All the "amateur" in ATO means is that they were not previously on a professional contract (ever). If they had previously been on a pro contract, they would sign a PTO, which is limited to 30-days, except in emergency situations. After 30 days they have to sign a standard player contract. ATO's have no such length-of-service rules, provided the player stays in the AHL (or below)...the NHL does not honor ATO contracts, though they do have 1-game PTO contracts which are generally used for emergency situations. The NHL requires a standard player contract except in those 1-game situations.

But rest assured, players that sign an ATO do get paid...may not be much, but they do. Unless, for some stupid reason, they agree to an ATO w/ no compensation...but that's just silly.

 Unless things have changed. I went to a couple of games in Albany over the last couple of years, small crowds. The whole upper bowl was covered by a drape and the lower bowl was maybe 1/3 occupied. Cities usually lose teams because of poor attendance. Although to be fair I think Glens Falls lost out because the facility is too small. I think the Phantoms are only there temporarily. Perhaps new ownership and a team affiliated with an NHL team that has some fans in Albany might work out better. Buffalo Boston Rangers:(

True, Rats games have had historically poor attendance, however back in February RPI, Union, the Rats, and the Adirondack Phantoms all played home games on the same night. I couldn't find attendance figures for the Rats' game, but the Phantoms, Dutchmen, and Engineers combined for almost 10,000 tickets alone showing there ARE plenty of hockey fans in the area. All that is needed is a competitive team (Union and RPI both went to the postseason this year), which Albany FINALLY has this season and attendance figures ARE up.

Yes, the Phantoms are tentative ... tentatively. The Phantoms are playing at the Glens Falls Civic Center since their rink in Philly was demolished. The owners said it was the Civic Center was a quick fix until a suitable arena is found, however recently they have said that they like the fit in the ADK's and are not rushing to find a new, permanent home for the team.

Yes, it'll still mean the capital region will have quality professional hockey, however it wont be the same Rats we've had for the past 16 years.

Rant over, keep pro hockey in Albany.
