In the Federal Government it was (is) know as RIP -- Retire In Place.

But say I'm the CEO of Acme and Wile E. Coyote sues for negligence because he smashed into a mountain after using our giant bat costume. I've been CEO since 1991. It's now 2002 and we sold him the costume in 1999. To avoid being named in the lawsuit, I say I retired retroactively in 1999 so I'm not liable for anything that happened after that. Does that seem likely to fly? What if I filed my income taxes in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and listed myself as CEO of Acme Enterprises? Does that present a legal problem for me?

As for your case - if you're attending Board meetings and signing things, then there is a prima facie case that you're still in the big chair. However, there is the Elmer J. Fudd, millionaire, defense that could cause you to escape liability. Failing all that, find a country that does not have a extradition treaty with the USA.

Romney won't win unless there's a return to recession by November, so I don't know why Dems even care at this point. I sure as **** don't.

Disagree.

What you can say is that folks should be rewarded for their contribution to society. This is very true. Fat cats can and should rake in big dough if they add value to society. But the final outcome of society being unequal is in fact not healthy for society (this should be clear even to those who don't really think much of Jesus).

If this country had more equitable income distribution...society would be better positioned to pay taxes and not need to continue to help make the poor competitive. Many of the challenges the country as a whole faces have to do with inequity. Its far more often character strengths and use of marketplace to make consumers happy...and much less financial inequity...that has positioned the US well historically. Arguably the most significant problem that the continent of south america faces is inequity. After Africa, its the top worldwide basketcase.

The problem is in how to have the US be more equitable while continuing to reward those who do create value for society. As the push to equality is expensive, potentially unfair and in other ways problematic, a remedy thats too strong might be worse than the disease.

If income inequality it the only issue we need to solve, give every american earning below the average of $48k, the difference. Don't do it by providing a thousand services run by the government, just give them a monthly check for the difference and let them buy/rent their own houses, buy their own food, buty their own insurance, pay for their education etc. Why run the risk that decades of providing support may actually inhibit long term development of skills and ambition? We know a family can exist at some level of income, if $48k is too low then make it $60. Save the money from running agency upon agency. Eliminate fraud. Just enroll everybody above 18 on a payroll system and pay them. Income inequality solved.

Pay for it by getting out of iraq,eliminating the redtape that allows welfare, medicare and medicaid fraud, shutting down government agencies, freezing hiring at agencies that still exist to transfer people from sunsetting agencies, devote remaining employess to collecting the $300B a year the IRS fails to collect.

Citibank collects 95% of the money owed to it on unsecured credit(and those people cannot pay) but the US can only collect 84% of taxes...and those people can pay.

We can whine about companies or people utilizing legal deductions or offsets, why not get real mad about those who just don't payat all?

If income inequality is truly such a bad thing, just confiscate every dollar made over $200k by "the rich" and burn it. Since the spread of income would be far narrower under such a scenario, society would be better off, right?

I refuse to be outraged by this; I expect politicians to lie and misrepresent as much **** as they can.

And this issue is unlikely to impact anyone's vote in November. It certainly won't influence my non-vote in November.

There is, but it's almost certainly illegal.

Neither candidate would fight too hard for my non-vote anyway. I live in a state that hasn't voted Republican for president since Nixon. Clearly if I ever hope to be bribed into participating in a stupid election, I have to move somewhere that is far more competitive.

Why is one of his points of criticism focused on the number of laws that Congress has passed?

The republic has existed for over 200 years; do we really need 500 more laws enacted every couple years?

Here's an idea - how about they pass the budget on time, solve a couple problems (without creating new ones ), and then get rid of a bunch of the tax code's complexity by eliminating deductions and credits, and lowering the rates on income while raising the rate on capital gains? If they were to do that, I'd consider them to be highly successful.

While I can understand being annoyed about a politician who runs primarily on fiscal responsibility while lying about his finances (and I'm assuming for the sake of the point that this is true. Of course, I'm pretty sure it is.), I agree that this is very similar to the Obama transcript thing. Point was made; people who care noted it, while people who don't care... well... don't care; move on.

I almost stopped reading at that point. But then I realized you probably wouldn't post something that wasn't worth reading and continued on. Glad I did. I couldn't disagree with much in that article.
