Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

And Clarkson wins it with a goal 1:01 into overtime to take the league title. The fact that it came to this kind of battle against the last place team speaks to how much more competitive the conference has become, top to bottom.

I have to give Union a lot of credit, especially their goalie Lundberg. She was great all game. Had no chance on either Clarkson goal. Union goal that was scored on the PP was one Howe should have stopped.

Especially when you consider that Union had nothing to play for and Clarkson, everything to play for in terms of finishing first. Credit to Asano-Barcomb and her staff for getting her team motivated and ready to play in an enemy rink on the last day of the regular season.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

Union parents don't see it that way, ironically. They blame the coaches for the loss in their thread.. they get outshot almost 3:1 and only allow 2 GA and say that "the talent is there but the coaching isn't."

Understandable. Parents are looking at it through rose colored glasses. If they took off those glasses, they would realize that their kids aren't quite as talented as the Clarkson kids. If they were, they would be in the top four of the ECAC. Coaching may be part of the problem but coaching can't make up that big a difference between first and last place. Not going to happen.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

Games underway, all three goals scored so far are on special teams.

Princeton is up 2-0 on Cornell in game 1. Butler and Loyd with the goals. Shots 19-8 for Cornell.
Both goals on the PP.

Clarkson leading Dartmouth 1-0, Rattray with the Goal. Shots 25-8 for the Knights.
Goal on the PP.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

Princeton scored two PP goals, 25 seconds apart at 7:47 and 8:12 into the 2nd period. !!

Look like the first goal was on a 5 on 3.

Late in second, still 2-0. Clarkson - Dartmouth still 1-0, 5 to go in 2nd.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

First two games in the books.

Cornell over Princeton 3-2. Shots were 34-18 for Cornell.

Clarkson over Dartmouth 2-0. Shots were 40-15 for Clarkson.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

I have no idea what to make of Princeton and, by extension, the rest of the ECAC. Based simply on their trip here in November I thought they were the weakest team Minnesota played all year, rivaled only by Minnesota State (and, yeah, some of their results were puzzling, too). So their ability to give Cornell, Clarkson, Harvard, and BC trouble has been perplexing. Maybe it was just matchup issues, or an extreme aversion to airports, but I have no idea what to think of the Tigers' season as a whole.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

It's pretty common for teams to perform poorly after flights in season. It has definitely been clear to me both East@West and West@East at times. Frozen Fours it's not as much a problem since you have more time.

Looks to me like Princeton has become a much more consistent team since their January exam break.

Clarkson won 43 of 59 faceoffs in the game  and Rattray got both goals on the PP.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

Next weekend could be really interesting in the North Country. Clarkson men are already guaranteed a quarterfinal home series. Assuming the Clarkson women win, the ECAC Womens Championships are at Cheel. Assuming the Quinnipiac women win their series over SLU, and if the SLU men could somehow win this weekend and get a home ice quarterfinal berth, there would be 5 hockey teams and their fans looking for hotel space in the North Country, 3 women's teams and 2 men's teams. There would be 3 games to be played at Cheel. I would assume Saturday, the 2nd men's quarterfinal is played in the evening and the 2 women's semifinals games are played in the afternoon. I do not think there is a third place game in the women's playoffs so there would only be the women's championship to be played on Sunday (hopefully the men's series ends on Saturday with a Clarkson sweep :) ).

Some might have to venture to Ogdensburg or Watertown or Massena.

Luckily it is a commutable distance for me. :)

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

Yale is (make that was) leading Harvard 2-1 in the third.....Now 2-2 with six minutes left in the third.

Quinnipiac over SLU in a romp, 5-0 final. Shots were pretty even at 29-28.

Re: Ecac seeding/playoff predictions

On the PP. There were six penalties called in the two OT periods.

Of all the playoffs games played in all the four leagues, this was one of two that went to OT and the only game where the lower seed won. Seems like overall there was more close contests in the ECAC playoff games than in the other leagues.
