ECAC Pick The Standings 2009-2010

Re: ECAC Pick The Standings 2009-2010

I don't understand all the disrespect for Union. They've been steadily improving for about 5 years, and whenever they finish higher than 10th, everyone is shocked. It's weird. Did they lose all their good players or something? And if not, why aren't they being rated higher?
As the only non Ivy that doesn't give athletics grants in aid, I don't think Union will be taken seriously or gain significant respect by the ECAC fans until and unless they make a serious playoff run, and frankly as a Union supporter I'm OK with that. I wouldn't be surprised however, if ECAC coaches and others in the know are taking some notice of the steady improvement that Nate Leaman has brought to the program during his tenure. (At least we're number one in the capital district. ;))

Union's end-of-season ranking in the ECAC by year:

Code:
99-00 10th
00-01 9th
01-02 11th
02-03 6th
03-04 8th
04-05 8th
05-06 6th
06-07 12th
07-08 4th
08-09 8th

I'm not personally shocked when they finish higher than expected, but there's nothing steady about jumping from 8 to 6 to 12 to 4 to 8. Most people on here aren't going to see the intangible changes that happen behind the scenes with a coach trying to improve the program, only the numbers at the end of the season. Nobody gives Union any credit because they've yet to do anything overly noteworthy in the ECAC. Despite a range of finishes to the regular seasons, never winning a postseason series tends to sour the perception of a team. When they win a series or (gasp) make it to Albany, people will start to take them seriously.

And not just to come off as a Union hater, RPI's been treated the same way the past few seasons. Other than this past season when we surprised folks by beating Dartmouth in the playoffs, we hadn't won a playoff series since 02-03. It's only the bit of a glimmer we showed in the playoffs and a very strong recruiting class this year that have kept us from seeing another year of the same type of picks. A strong USCHO contingent of RPI homers picking them high helps, too. ;)

All that said, Union lost some impact players with both captains graduating along with Milnamow, Potts, and Harr. Recruits look like they have promise and some solid talent returning, but without a good showing the previous season to build on, those things have a hard time changing peoples' perception of the team during the offseason.

Don't feel bad, people are picking Colgate real low too despite a great incoming class and returning a player that got a lot of national spotlight last spring (MacIntyre). And Colgate is prohibited to give athletics grants in aid for football by strict orders of the Patriot League.

My preliminary picks:

1. Yale -- they lost Richards but bring back Backman, Arcobello, and other contributors
2. Cornell -- because they always find a way to be in the top four
3. Princeton -- they only lost 3 players to graduation and still have Kalemba for 1 more year
4. Harvard -- a great incoming class and the #18 overall pick in this year's NHL draft should catapult them in the right direction
5. Colgate -- a bit of a homer pick, with key players returning and a great incoming class, they should improve
6. RPI -- they beat Cornell at Lynah last March. But they've still got some ways to go.
7. Clarkson -- would have picked them 4th, but after the drama going on, it may cause them to "slip up"
8. Union -- they return some key players, but also lost some. Milan will be the key to 1st round home ice
9. Quinnipiac -- have Wong back, but questions in net will bump them out of 1st round home ice
10. Dartmouth -- have some talent, but still got a long way to go
11. St. Lawrence -- they lost a lot to graduation and will face situations similar to those Colgate faced last year
12. Brown -- they can't fall any further, but they're program is on the road to nowhere

Does anyone know when Media Day is? I will probably revise these picks before the league opener, based on how well teams play in their non-conference October games.

Rainman ( Just a little Heads up )

Cam MacIntyre is with Princeton:

David McIntyre is with Colgate:

I agree with your comments on Union and Colgate. They will be very difficult teams to play against this year.
Union returns many of its top scorers and rearguards, and Colgate just brought in a very good freshman class, along with the return of all its top scorers from last year.

The stats with 25 contestants:

Avg High Low Std Dev
1 Corn 2.24 1.00 4.00 1.09
2 Yale 2.24 1.00 8.00 1.71
3 Prin 3.52 1.00 7.00 1.83
4 Harv 4.24 2.00 6.00 1.27
5 RPI 6.80 2.00 11.00 2.71
6 Dart 7.08 3.00 10.00 2.06
7 Clark 7.28 1.00 12.00 3.43
8 Quinn 7.32 5.00 11.00 1.52
9 SLU 8.24 1.00 11.00 2.71
10 Colg 8.48 3.00 12.00 2.66
11 Union 8.80 4.00 12.00 1.94
12 Brown 11.76 10.00 12.00 0.52

IMHO Union and Colgate will be much higher than the contestants think and I still think Clarkson may be headed for a 9th place or lower finish. RPI and Harvard are sort of wild cards. Their freshman classes are supposedly spectacular but they are freshmen and you never know until they get on the ice. Other than Yale, Cornell and probably Princeton at the top and Bruno bringing up the rear, the rest of the bunch all have questions. Should make for one of the best regular seasons in the history of the 12 team league.

BTW Union DID win a playoff series last season and did so in convincing fashion (sorry for the reminder Vic).. I know we don't get much credit, but at least give us that! I would also call two straight quarterfinal appearances good progress for a program that struggled to win 10 games in a season for most of the first 15 years in D-1. ..of course, this and $50 will get you a couple nice seats at the TUC to watch the ECAC finals. Until the Dutch make it to Albany with their skates on, respect will be lacking.

As for this season, U has a lot of firepower returning up front, but has major question marks on defense and in goal (the one area where Leaman has NOT had good recruiting success). If the ??s are answered U will be pretty good and could be a major surprise. If not they could be battling Brom for 12th.

My bad. :o Don't ask how I managed to miss that one. I remember now being happy that at least it came at Clarkson's expense. ;)
