East-West 2012

Re: East-West 2012

Elmira looked great. Very passionate, very into the game. Definitely could have won today easily.

I'd say Elmira is a lot more happy with the tie than Norwich is.

Norwich is still working through some growing pains and No. 1 goalie Kelly Fisk is currently out with an injury.

Elmira may be happy with the tie, but they have to feel they let this one get away. Up 2-0 after the 2nd and then giving the goals up 6x4 and 6x3 (actually the longest delayed penalty 6x3 action I have ever seen, must have been close to a minute, refs arm must have been tired). You cannot expect to win when you have someone in the box the equivalent of an entire period, especially against a team as skilled as Norwich. The Soaring Eagles looked great as a team; strong break out, super goal play, may have found a sniper in Nystrom (although the rule on checking seems a bit different in the US), they were taking it to Norwich. The Cadets look really talented, they just need to jell team-wise; the skills are obviously there. Sorry to hear about the Fisk injury, but Carrier looked stronger as the game went on and showed a nice glove on a couple of shots (big save with 1:30 left in regulation and a nice pad save on Hogan in OT). Just an all around great game to watch. I hope the rest of the season is this entertaining!

Oser...were you one of the 57 in attendance for the evening tilt? How'd that one look?

Indeed I was one of the lamentably sparce 57 faithful attending the nightcap. There was lots of end to end action, but much of it took place on the perimeter and both squads had trouble getting to the front of the net. It looked a lot more like a season opening contest and contrasted with the intensity and energy displayed in the Elmira-Norwich game. Were I a betting man my money would be on the Cadets and Soaring Eagles in today's matchups. Both Valiants and Cardinals are clearly talented squads and I am sure they will round into form as the season gets under way.
The first Cardinal goal was a nice 2x1 break from the neutral zone with Kinster feeding Rutherford on left wing and going to the top of the crease for the return pass. Rutherford was patient, drew the D and let Kinster have a nicely timed and placed pass for the jam under Evans. Manhattanville was able to capitalize on the ill timed Era elbowing, took a time out and then executed the play with Morrison winning the draw back to Schill who fed Little down low; Little had her back to the net and was able to draw and re-direct the puck beneath the traffic in the goal mouth for the tieing score. The OT game winner came off a scrum in the slot following a couple of Evans saves on Stewart and Kinster and was pretty much a tap in at the goalie's gloveside by Gove with Evans down.
This is the 2nd year that the weather down south is deteriorating as I try to enjoy the East-West day 2! Last year I drove home into a snow storm and this year it is the hurricane. Hope the power is not out too long and Long Island Sound is not running up the street!

Don't forget folks...live video and live stats from today's second game between No. 1 Norwich and No. 2 Plattsburgh.

Unfortunately neither for the first game between Elmira and Manhattanville. I'll try and update on here as much as I can.

Should be another great day of hockey!
