Yeah…the problem is that people who hate Trump will stay home in 2026, so Democrats roar to victory in the midterms (yes, I think there will still be meaningful elections), but the problem is 99% of Americans don’t realize Democrats controlling the House (maybe the Senate) come 2027 doesn’t mean anything will change. In fact, Trump will (successfully) argue that Democrats are doing x,y,z throughout 2027 and 2028 to block him (from continuing to destroy the country). And even if Democrats win with Gavin Newsom* in 2028, all of us on this board know it’s a lot fucking harder to build or repair shit than to break it in the first place. Everything fucked up between now and 2028 will take decades to rebuild.

I’m not so stupid as to vote for Republicans. Never have; never will. But the average American will blame Newsom and Democrats for their life being far shittier in the coming years (we on this board know that’s a lie) and everything Trump destroyed between 204-2028 will be out the window for those lower gas prices and groceries Republicans will promise the American people in 2030 and 2032. Apathetic? Maybe. Lazy and ignorant? Absolutely. I mean shit, I can’t get over that privileged white guy only voting four times in his whole life. We’re relying on people like that to show up to vote for moderate Democratic candidates…and he knows better!

As long as I live in Appalachia, I’ll live with the dichotomy of talking to everyone who is willing to talk politics with me in an effort to change minds, while accepting it won’t amount to a hill of beans in the long run.

TL;DR We’re probably fucked.
 
Meanwhile in a real country where leaders on both sides supported a genocide and championed an Apartheid regime, the Greens are now polling in first place and Labour and the Tories are duking it out for third. But hey, change is impossible. Vote Blue No Matter Who. (y)
 
its easy to say that, but the UK hasn't taken away women's bodily autonomy, and still provides healthcare for people. it's easier to vote third party with a parlimentary system and the fact that most basic human rights will remain no matter who is in power.

quality of life has degraded there since I was a resident; yet, so has here.

My point is, as a woman, not voting or voting in third party has a huge cost. I didn't say we should never do anything to break our horrible 2 party system, I simply pointed out its less risky and easier in Britain and you responded with a shitty comment.

45M, or 21%, of American adults are considered functionally illiterate. That means that they can't read or write at even a 5th grade level. Whether they vote red, blue, green, burnt sienna - whatever - those people can only be assumed to be ignorant in general. They can't be trusted to make an informed choice. And yet they can register to vote, and even get help doing so and filling out a ballot if necessary. We allow that in America as long as you understand the basic voting process and meet the minimum eligibility requirements.

Between that and the Christofascist right, this country is permafucked.

If more people had paid attention a decade ago (or even before that) and not just followed the VBNMW crowd but actually voted for the things they wanted then our two party system would have already been broken. But we can't have nice things. Those reproductive rights you mention went away while the Democrats controlled Congress and all I got was an inbox full of fundraising emails telling me to donate even more so they could fight after the next election. People die because they can't afford medicine. People live (or not) on poverty wages. And we celebrate and endorse genocide and claim that anyone who opposes it is an antisemitic terrorist. And both parties do it. But be sure to vote blue because that has made a world of difference so far.

I paid plenty of attention. You sound like that douchebag who has only voted four times in his whole life. Not that you’re a douchebag, but the privilege is showing. My job as a privileged white dude is to vote for the crazy left-wing candidate in the primary, and then when our black and brown brethren pick the Joe Biden candidates, I hold my nose and vote for them.

VBNMW isn’t the reason Republicans became a fascist cult. Democrats in power had nothing to do with SCOTUS overturning women’s autonomy. You know this. Yeah, the fundraising emails are awful. Easy to ignore and/or delete though, right?

I don’t get why this is so hard to understand. Your life is fucking fine no matter who is in power. You aren’t voting for you. Well, you shouldn’t be.
