I really hope it works out for you. If the U.S. ever returns to non-shithole status it will still be there for you to visit again.

btw - I think I remember you saying SE Asia was not on your radar (including Thailand?) but if that's not 100% don't sleep on Vietnam which is growing steadily in credibility on a number of fronts.

I'd be open to a lot of places. Hoping this first, easier route goes through first, but we'll see.

My wife and I are probably 60% committed at this point to start the golden visa route with Portugal for our escape plan. Minimal residency requirements (only have to be there at least one week per year once the visa is approved), and after 5 years you can qualify for permanent residency or citizenship, gaining free access to the rest of Europe. Downsides are the upfront investment costs and the length of time to actually get the initial visa, which can take a minimum of a year and sometimes much longer. Though my understanding is the delays have lessened since they stopped letting property purchases count as the investment.

I'm annoyed neither of us have any Canadian heritage in our backgrounds, cause with their recent change in law in December, anyone who can find a single Canadian citizen in their direct lineage may be able to become a citizen upon verification.

yeah I know two people who have already done this route with portugal.

My path will probably be messier and more frustrating, as I'm doing a birthright one

This is good information that I was unaware of. We have been looking at New Zealand but would probably prefer Europe. I think the next presidential election will be our point of decision. We are DINKs and saving as much as we can so we can potentially FIRE if shit hits the fan. I honestly would be looking into it more seriously if my parents were no longer living (I do not want to saddle my siblings with their final years of care) or if I did not have pets that are non-negotiable taking with us. Do you have a point/line in the sand that you would start your escape plan?

If your goal is to escape authoritarianism, Vietnam is not your destination.
 
Europe has been curtailing their visa programs. That window is closing.

But it ignores the main point, made perfectly clear in The Boys. "You think Homelander isn't coming to Costa Rica?"

sure, and some of us, in the meantime, can still work in science and research, because they haven't been abandoned yet. the other piece, that I think people don't get if they've never lived abroad in a place like europe - is that the QOL is still magnitudes higher. They still have walkable cities, public transport, actual vacation, food that isn't processed to hell and back. And generally, a much less pervasive religious BS doctrine.

I expect Portugal to make it more difficult at some point. I'm not even bothering with EU at this point

I would love to move permanently to Europe. There is nothing about the USA I would miss and tons I would love to get clear of forever. I have always been a European at heart. I read books, go to museums, hate cars, and don't get a boner when I see military hardware. And I don't feel the need to liberate anybody with my brand of consumerist trashfoolery.

I only speak English. That is what holds me here. I'm a-scurred I could never function outside the Anglophone killing jar.
