Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Recent beer tries in the recent weeks

Ballantine IPA which was a nice good IPA
Long Hammer IPA which I like a little more than the Ballantine
Original Sin Cherry Cider not that good I think I'll stick with the Apple Ciders though I have had a pear cider or two that was good.

Went out to Syracuse for the Carrier Dome Classic and had 3 from one of the local breweries
Late Knight IPA very good
Wailing Wench Ale Ok both by Middle Ages brewing company.
Empire Ale which was OK but nothing great especially with the $10 Carrier Dome price tag
I also had the Leinenkugel's Snowdrift Vanilla Porter which was good

Home to Mom and Dad for Thanksgiving meant a trip to Davidson's Brewery in Glens Falls had the
Irish Red OK but a little weak
Double ESB been a long time since I had a bitter, very good
finished with the Dacker Adirondack Ale which was OK

Last weekend they had the Christmas Beers out but no Santa's butt yet

Coney island Seas the Day IPL interesting a India Pale Lager rather than Ale good but not good as an IPA
Abita Christmas Ale, Probably the worst Abita beer I have ever had but still okay
Victory Winter Cheers alright Christmas Hefeweizen
12 Dogs of Christmas OK winter warmer

I have one bottle of the Big Lushious. I really want more, but NO ONE has it. I got lucky in that my store happened to get a couple bottles and they saved one for me, thinking I'd want it.

I have three. :)

Very tempted to stop tomorrow to see if there are any left.

I will buy/trade for any you wish to give up. Seriously. Abyss, Surly 8 are on the table for trade.

Walked into a liquor store to see if I could get any boxes for moving, ended up buying their last 4 pack of BCS.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Stopped by Econo Foods in Houghton for tailgating beer. They had 4 bottles of Founders Big Lushious. HAD. :)

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I didn't like the Big Lushious as much as I thought I would. Tasty, but almost too sweet and raspberry-ish.

On the other hand, liked the Molotov Cocktail more than I expected. Lots of fruit to balance the hoppiness.

Seriously... high school hockey is so fun.

Went out with the parent group tonight to one of our sponsor bar/restaurants. Actually had a couple of beers before switching to whiskey coz of course their rum selection was god-awful.

Meant to order a Crown & Coke but said CC & Coke. I saw the bartender pouring it and I'm thinking, did I say CC and I'm like dammit, I did say CC. He brought it over and I just had to live with my mistake. Ugh.

The next few rounds when I finally got my Crown (the best of the Canadians that they had) were so great... sublime almost after having to endure the CC.

Yuck. CC sucks ***.

Btw.. I'm hammered, my boy's team won and he played well.

**** yeah!

Went to The Library in Houghton to clsoe out the night. Classier place. Had a Woodford Double Oak to start....then I had a realization.....

Classy enough place.....not busy.....yup. Old Fashioned time. And hooooooboy. That bartender made a HELLUVA Old Fashioned. So tasty. I was very pleased.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

We were in the Bahamas last week for our honeymoon. We stopped by the John Waitlings distillery in Nassau and it was fun for a couple reasons.

First, it was used as a set for Casino Royale. It was the Nambutu embassy where Bond was chasing the bombmaker. They had a little sign showing where Craig (or his stuntman) jumped off the truck and over the fence to get around security.

Second, the rum was really good and the bartender made what might be the best pina colada I have ever had.

It's also up a relatively steep hill from cruise ship central so it was nice to get away from the crowds. The day we went in there were 5 ships in port, so it was nice to find a little oasis.

Ended up selling 2 of them (at cost) to another person in our group; I had promised him some if I found extra.

I also traded an extra Abyss and $10 for a 4-pack of BCS (a different person in our group had extras).

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Out checking out a new BBQ place last night and came across a beer I'd never heard of before called Rince Cochon, and since their tap handle is a pig drinking beer, and I was eating pig and drinking beer, I had to order it. Man, that was really, really good. Belgian light lager with great round spicy flavor. Give it a look if you come across it.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Rince Cochon literally translates to 'Hogwash'. Sounds good though, and at 8.5% ABV, I imagine it packed a nice punch.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I had my bottle of Big Luscious this weekend. It was a solid beer, but it was a little too sweet. I still really liked it, but for me it isn't a beer that I have to run out and buy more bottles when I can still find them. I do recommend giving it a try, though, as it is still a really tasty beer.

My wife and I shared a bottle of Schell's Black Forrest Cherry, and I think this was better now than it was when we tried it at the ABR. It had a sharper sour flavor, that we like in our sour beers. Very well done berliner weisse by Schell's.

Also had a bottle of Widmer's Ginger Barrel-Aged Brrrrrbon (2013). This was not that great...I had had the 2012 regular barrel-aged Brrrrrbon before, and I liked that. This one had a really odd combination of hoppy and ginger, that I don't think worked real well.

Last week I got a 6 pack of Fireside Chat by 21st Amendment. I really liked this one. Easy to drink, just a hint of some holiday spices, and a real well balanced flavor that worked for a holiday beer. I recommend giving this one a shot if you're looking for a winter beer.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Movie day today, so had Founders Big Lushious and Bent Brewstillery's Dark Fatha ("Emperical Stout" aged in Rye/Bourbon/Scotch barrels). The BL was a bit sweet. Needed more chocolate to balance the raspberry flavor out. My other bottles will sit quite a while. The DF.....WOW there's a lot going on. It's like an Everlasting Gobstopper of flavors. Delicious. Definitely recommend.

I have a Dark Fathi in the cellar. Looking forward to that one.

I think aging the BL will help. I have one more DF that I will save, too, because I think there will be a drastic change in flavor because of all that is going on. Should be interesting.
