Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I drank a McKenzie's Pumpkin Jack hard cider last night. It was the best hard cider I have ever had. The pumpkin flavor was not overwhelming and there was just a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon to it. A nice drink for the holiday season.

I usually do not like flavored beers/ciders but **** that was good. If anyone does like hard ciders trying McKenzie's is a must. They are excellent. I particularly like the Green Apple and Seasonal Reserve also. They blow Angry Orchard, Woodchuck, Samuel Smith, etc. out of the water.

The newest iteration of Stone's Enjoy By IPA, Enjoy By 12.26.14 IPA, is going to begin bottling in a couple of days and will be shipped to 39 states (plus DC and Puerto Rico), a far wider distribution than Enjoy By normally gets. (Enjoy By 10.31.14 was shipped to 11 states, Enjoy By 12.05.14 only within California.) These include most of the college hockey map. Raise your hand if you want to try it! Not so fast, Wisconsin and North Dakota. (Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming are also out of luck.)

Surprisingly, the beer here, in Salt Lake City, isn't as bad as I expected. I've had a couple brews from Uinta, a session IPA and a Black IPA. Both are solid. Have 2 Wasach beers, 2 Squatters, and 1 more Uinta left to try.

Oh, Utah has good beer... Once the Mormons put aside some of the more serious regulations some good breweries stepped into the breech.

Now, they ain't denver but they got some good things going

After a couple months building a stockpile for next fall/winter (aging 2nd bottles of the specialty stuff I buy), took inventory today. It doesn't come close to what I know bbdl has (he prob rivals Gurt's bar, but his cache is specialty beer), but it's a good start:

Surly SeVIIn
Surly 8
Surly Darkness
Clown Shoes Ride The Lion
Clown Shoes Itasca Loonidragon
Clown Shoes Extremely Angry Beast
Odell 180 Shilling
Boulder 35th Anniv
Deschutes Black Butte XXVI
Abita Bourbon Street Imperial Stout
Indeed Rum King
Founders Backwoods Bastard (4packs, not bombers, unlike the rest of the list; and I stockpiled this: 3 extra 4packs) :D

I so wish clown shoes had a brewery... Sigh

Wow. I got lucky and found a place selling four packs. I'm in hog heaven.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Came across a nice surprise today... Was food shopping at my local grocery store and came across Goose Island Bourbon County Stout for $25.99/4-pack

This place does NOT have a huge beer selection normally... They carry just a handful of varieties of craft beer in addition to the usual name brand offerings... Really shocked to see it so cheap as well... Usually places sell individual bottles for $7 each... Happy Black Friday to me :D

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I managed to get my hands on a four-pack myself. I almost messed my pants.

I'm now in possession of 16 bottles of BC Stout :D

Yea, grocery store still had it in stock today... Would have bought more, but it was just a 2-pack limit... Gonna swing by tomorrow and see if I can nab more... If NMU makes the Final Five, I'll be more than willing to trade with you Minnesota folk :o

I'm offering $10/bottle for the regular BCS. I'm serious. This is one beer I'll never get tired of/have enough of.

Brent gets first dibs, but I'd be willing to trade a Darkness 2014 for a pair of bottles

Even if Raceboarder offers me all his extras, I'll leave two for you. :)

Should I cut out of work early to go to a beer store that has Bourbon County Stout, Coffee, and Barleywine, and also Enjoy By? (As of yesterday when they last updated their beermenus.com listing anyway.)

Nah... All that will totally be there when you get off work :p

my local beer bar is doing a tap takeover a couple of wednesdays from now... should be good.

edit:

Gosh, I haven't had time to assess everything I've bought or received in the last week. So, I went to Iron Hill (a chain near Philly) for lunch last Tuesday... good beer... I'm hoping to make it back because they were promising a oatmeal cookie beer that's supposed to go up soon... I'll stop by on my way up for christmas... then stopped at Two Roads in Stratford CT... more good beer... picked up two bottles for my DC buddy. Stopped over at Wachusett (Westminster, MA) on Friday... sampled a pale ale I hadn't drank before, pretty good... picked up 2 filled "cans" from there.

Saturday I made a run up to seacoast New Hampshire to check out Smuttynose and Throwback (Hampton, NH). Throwback is still rather small but I'm reasonably confident that it won't remain that way. They're making very good beer and they plan on building a new facility and farmhouse. Picked up a couple bottles from each. Smuttynose has recently built a big ol' complex... restaurant still to open. Nice what you can do when land is cheap(er). I wish I could have gone in the bottle club plan.

Hockey game... sucked. Can't go wrong at Beer Works. I traded off 12 DC-ish beers for 12 New England-ish beers... I actually ended up getting more than that... haven't done the inventory.

Stopped off at Flying Fish in NJ on Sunday. Ran out of time but the stuff was pretty good.

Yesterday, I traded off with my local friend for some Florida stuff. Haven't inventoried that. We will trade off more after xmas when he goes to Louisiana.

Heh. Well, the listing was out of date about the Barleywine (which I already have a couple of bottles of from last year's release) and Coffee. I did get a four-pack of the regular BCBS and a bottle of the Enjoy By 12.16.14. I was having trouble deciding between Bourbon Barrel Aged Arrogant Bastard at $10.99 or the Lukcy Basartd blend that got a really good writeup on Drunkspin at $9.99, so naturally I settled on a four-pack including both plus a regular Arrogant Bastard and a Double Bastard for $24.99. Also, while I was deliberating over that choice, a guy came over and introduced himself as the manager of the store's beer department, and let me know that they're expecting to get more of the BCBS Coffee and the (if I'm not mistaken) exceedingly hard-to-find BCBS Vanilla Rye and put me on a list of people to be called when they get them in. He might have been full of crap, but no harm done even if he was.

Then, because I decided I hadn't bought enough beer, I went to another store a few minutes away and picked up a bottle of Evil Twin Christmas Eve At A New York City Hotel Room (what a ridiculous name, but the beer is supposed to be good) and a bottle of this stuff called Sagra Bohio (brewed specifically to pair well with desserts, and since I like dessert wine a lot, I figured why not?).

I'm willing to kill to get my hands on a bottle of the GI BC Vanilla Rye... It's only sold in bombers and is in very short supply around Chicagoland.... That's how I discovered the BCS at the place I described above... Gonna swing by that place again after getting paid on Friday and see if the secret got out yet :p

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Happy Repeal Day!

In 1933, state conventions ratified the Twenty-first Amendment, which repealed Prohibition. The Amendment was fully ratified on December 5, 1933.

The 21st Amendment is the only one ratified by state conventions.
