Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

After a couple months building a stockpile for next fall/winter (aging 2nd bottles of the specialty stuff I buy), took inventory today. It doesn't come close to what I know bbdl has (he prob rivals Gurt's bar, but his cache is specialty beer), but it's a good start:

Surly SeVIIn
Surly 8
Surly Darkness
Clown Shoes Ride The Lion
Clown Shoes Itasca Loonidragon
Clown Shoes Extremely Angry Beast
Odell 180 Shilling
Boulder 35th Anniv
Deschutes Black Butte XXVI
Abita Bourbon Street Imperial Stout
Indeed Rum King
Founders Backwoods Bastard (4packs, not bombers, unlike the rest of the list; and I stockpiled this: 3 extra 4packs) :D

Surly Eight review cross-posted from GPL.

It's truly outstanding. It reminds me of Czeched Out, a barrel-aged doppelbock.

8 is almost perfect. Not too hoppy, not to malty. Right sweetness. Right bitterness. Not too acidic. The barrel aging probably wasn't necessary but it adds so much complexity. The aroma is amazing. Maybe better than the beer itself. Reminds me of the first time I had bourbon County stout.

Tons of toffee and caramel. The rye balances out the sweetness with some alcohol. The pour into a glass is a gorgeous amber with a light head.

This is a very special beer.

To piggy back on this, cracked one of my 8s. It wasn't as boozy as I remember when I first tried it, but still boozy. 6-12 months aging, and this will be beyond awesome. It's very good right now, just a little sharp-tasting. Mellow that out....Surly wins again, and I am far from a Surly fan when it comes to their regular offerings.

Did you ever find Louie's Demise?

I did not. That other Louie was the only MKE brew they had. It just rung a bell, and couldn't remember which was the good one, and which one wasn't. I wasn't even looking for Louie's, just happened to see this one on the shelf.

Angostura 1919 - neat.

Smooooooth... Very nice.

Should have checked this out much, much sooner. Has always been available here and I own and really like the Angostura 5 and Angostura 7 as mixers.

This one is outstanding neat and a nice addition to my premiums.

The Louie's that is barrel aged (don't remember which it is) is easily the worst barrel aged beer I have ever tasted. Disgusting stuff.

The saving grace of being limited to SE Asians pilsners, lagers and Heineken here is that quality booze is about 25% cheaper than at home. That said since it's going to be hot here just about every **** day I could really use a quality summer brew, wheat, Belgian...

Surprisingly, the beer here, in Salt Lake City, isn't as bad as I expected. I've had a couple brews from Uinta, a session IPA and a Black IPA. Both are solid. Have 2 Wasach beers, 2 Squatters, and 1 more Uinta left to try.

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the Travel thread, but: Gurtholfin, you should check out St. Martin if you have a chance to make another Caribbean trip after St. Lucia. Although it seems like they don't actually do any distilling locally, pretty much every restaurant we went to (from beach shacks to fancy French places) does their own infusions and pours a complimentary drink after your meal. It's not on par with the expensive stuff, certainly, but always hit the spot.

We did stop by Ma Doudou briefly yesterday morning (given that they sell booze, their hours, oddly, are Monday-Friday from 8am to 3pm). As I said above, they don't make their own rum; rather, they buy rum from Martinique (so, presumably, cheap commodity stuff) and then infuse it themselves to make delicious concoctions. I brought back a bottle of passionfruit and a bottle of chocolate. They're prettily painted, but, sadly, plastic rather than glass. Still worth a look if you're there.

Thanks for the update. I hope to someday hit all of those islands.

Oh yeah, and it's like 10 here today and -20 with the wind chill, so go fvck yourself. :p:D

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Had one more Utah beer last night before turning in for the night. It was a Wasatch Devastator Double Bock (a dopplebock). My first few sips were very meh, borderline bad, and I am not sure why. I ended up rating it a 2.5 on Untappd because of this, and then proceeded to finish the bottle. The odd thing was, by the time I was half way done with the bottle, it was tasting pretty good, by the end, it was excellent. I wish I could change my rating, because by the end I'd give it 4 stars. I don't know if it just got that much better as it warmed up a bit, or if for some reason it just didn't hit me right at first. But in the end, I really liked it, and I'd recommend giving it a shot.

Hey, I'm back home in New York now, where it's a balmy 31 degrees. At least we can all point and laugh at the poor saps in Buffalo.

We don't need weather events for that. ;)

Hope you know I'm kidding.

Dang, do I love the tropics though and I wonder more and more why exactly I live where I do. Once I'm an empty nester, I'd imagine I won't be long for the northern latitudes...

You're Gary Bettman's target demographic!

Yeah... I don't know that it will be Florida. Plus... not gonna do the Panthers much good when I attend one game a year to see the Blackhawks.

Heh, yeah, I know. :)

I think you do need weather events for the kind of snow they're getting in Buffalo though!

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Nice big pour of Angostura 1919, feet up and flipping through the Center Ice offerings.

This really is some smooth stuff. No burn at all. Figures that the last one I get around to purchasing is among the best.

Worked out from 8-9, so no guilt about my nightcap.

I feel goooooood..... :)

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Visited Wasatch Brewpub in Park City tonight. Wasatch beers seem to lose their quality faster than others when bottled. The bottled stuff I've had in the past has been underwhelming, whereas the stuff i had at the brewery, and bottled here is excellent.

Enjoyed a Polygamy Nitro Porter and a couple Cherry Coconut Porter. The Cherry Coconut Porter was excellent, which was surprising. They had just tapped the first keg ever of this stuff, so i got to be one of the first people to try it ever. It wasn't even on Untappd yet, so i had to add it.
