Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Wiser's would have been the second.

I've purchased a second bottle of Plantation 20 Year Anniversary.

Zacapa is getting low.

The rest of my spendy bottles are only touched every so often. I tend to drink most regularly in in the $20-$30 range.

This, for regular price range.

Huh. I have many bottles more expensive than that. Oops. I'm on my 3rd or 4th bottle of Lagavulin 16, as that is always stocked on the bar. Have had several Laphroaigs, but replaced my Laph spot with a Caol Ila last time.

I believe that if I were a whiskey/bourbon and/or scotch drinker, I would too.

Good rum is simply less expensive than those of the same level.

Yeah, I understand. My problem is that my favorite liquor is single malt scotch, and not the mass-produced token Glenlivet's, Macallan or Glenfiddishes that you see at every bar around. :p

I feel your pain although at least they have those at bars.

As I've bemoaned before - most bars have rail, Bacardi Light and Meyers (sp? who cares, it's shwagg anyway) Dark.

I've actually carried my flask into some bars and just ordered Cokes or asked for an empty rocks glass and poured my own.

Most bars don't carry the liquor I drink, but I have several other options I'm good with drinking instead. I don't mind a good 7&7, and beer is always an option for me.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I actually like and have always liked beer. Just haven't been drinking in much over the past 5 years or so. Too filling and takes too long to get buzzed - if I ever even do before getting full and sleepy.

Now that I've lost some weight though, maybe I should add it back into the mix.

The other thing I've found though is that I really don't get hangovers if I stick to liquor - even if I drink a lot of it.

Used to get the worst, most debilitating hangovers and gotta say that life on the weekends is a lot better without those. Drinking beer and following it with rum or whiskey once I get bored with the beer would probably have an effect on me the next day.

I'm pretty sure that my steady change from liquor to beer has given me worse hangovers. I used to drink pretty much 100% liquor when I drank, and I rarely got hungover, and when I did, they were mild. Now that I drink mostly beer, my hangovers are much more regular, happen after drinking much less booze, and they're much worse in severity. Almost makes me want to convert back to the college Jack and Coke gameplan.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I've no doubt that's the case for me.

I've got to get up the next day and I love my weekend mornings, so don't want to be bedridden and waste that time - nor do I want to not be able to drink when the mood takes me.

Hey, speaking of rum - the wife and I are heading down to St. Martin for a long weekend in a couple of days, is there any good locally made rum there that I should keep an eye out for? It's pretty tiny, but Wikipedia tells me they export sugar, so maybe they turn some of it into the good stuff too.

I'm not familiar with any rums from St. Martin. After a quick check of a Rum board that I go to, I found this:

http://www.ministryofrum.com/countrydetails.php?c=72

It mentions Basco as being the only locally distilled rhum.

Personally, I don't care for rhum (French style of "rum" that uses sugar cane juice instead of molasses as a base), so I doubt I'd pursue this one other than maybe a one off in a bar as a sorta "When in Rome..."

Check out that post though and maybe it will help.

Your best opportunity will probably be in getting to try things that aren't available back home - regardless of their origin.

I think your take on those three is a bit off base.

No, I just don't like Speyside single malts, and they are the most prominent of all of the regions.

edit: Glenfiddich has 28 stills. Macallan has 15 stills.

Lagavulin has 4 stills, Caol Ila has 6 stills. Laphroaig has 7 stills.

The scale of production is a bit different.

Yeah, I came across that site too, but now that you've cited it I can trust that it's reputable. :)

Isn't rum that uses sugarcane juice rather than molasses cachaça and not actually rum?

Using the good ol' Google, I came across Ma Doudou. Although their name sounds like a three-year-old admiring his first successful use of the toilet, and the rum is probably low-quality with its flavor masked by fruit, the idea of bringing home some inexpensive pretty hand-painted bottles with so-so product doesn't sound so bad. It's touristy, but, hey, I'm going to be a tourist.

When in Rome...

Guarantee you that I won't be able to resist bringing home something local from St. Lucia, even if I would never touch it if it were on the shelves here.

I still have bottles of Tortuga Rum which I first had on my honeymoon on Grand Cayman in 1994. It's a decent gold rum suitable for mixing, but not memorable other than I had it there. It's not even distilled on Grand Cayman (Jamaica) although they package it as a Cayman product or call it Cayman rum.

It reminds me of my time in Grand Cayman though, so I will always try to have some on hand. Can be hard to find though.

As far as cachaca, it is also started from cane juice, but the end product is vastly different from rhum agricole. Cachaca kind of smells and tastes as if cabbage or cauliflower is somehow and ingredient. Personally, I tried cachaca in the past year and didn't care for it much although to be fair, I only tried one brand - Leblon.

Here is a link to what the Basco rhum is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhum_Agricole

I've only tried a few of these: Clement, Rhum Barbancourt and maybe another 1 or 2, but didn't care for them. While not very good at describing what I'm tasting in liquor, the best I can say is that the difference is similar to how bourbon tastes different from Canadian whiskey. There's a punkiness in rhum agricole that I don't really care for.

Oh yeah, and as far as My Doo Doo rums (rhums)?

I would ABSOLUTELY be bringing some of those home. Even if just for the bottles.

No question.

Hope you report back on anything interesting upon your return. I'd like to hear about it.

Have fun!

Oh yeah... and I'm jealous.

Hey, you're going to St. Lucia pretty soon though, right? So you don't need to be TOO jealous.

April... so yeah, jealous as I look out my window at the flurries.

Not bitterly jealous though... just that it would be fun.

We're not too far away from our trip to St. Kitts. Only a few weeks away. Based on what I've heard and read, there isn't much on St. Kitts for worthwhile rums. Oh well.

Well... you can get worthwhile rums here.

You can't get just about everything else that you'll be able to on St. Kitts.

To be honest, when I travel to the tropics, rum is pretty far down on the list of things that I look forward to. I mean, my collection is better than almost any one bar that I could go to down there anyway.

The fresh seafood is near the top of the list as is the beach/easy going lifestyle - of which rum is a part, but since most of the drinks are blended anyway, doesn't make a whole lot of difference as to the brand.

Have fun to you too.
