Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

So there actually is a decent brewery in DC... Three Stars had a tap takeover at my local exotic beer place and the 3 of 4 I had was pretty good. After assembling a futon I decided to get out of my apartment for the first time since Friday to check out their physical location. They didn't have many more on draft (of the 4 at the bar they were pour two of those and four others on tap)... but they're really doing something right. I think its taken them a little while to get there and its hard 'cause i don't go into DC bars and it takes a bit to distribute in the various states but its nice to see them get their legs under themselves. First non-brewpub inside the beltway to meet my seal of approval.

At the takeover they ran a real good brown w pecans, a very standard saison... THIS IS NOT A DIMINISHMENT... most saisons try to play up various angles and this one doesn't, and a decent porter. At their location they had the brown but on cocoa and vanilla... imo best treatment I've seen of that combo... and a very drinkable double IPA and I hate IPA. The other two, I think I can live without... but its nice to see some place coming along, finally.

edit: only negative note is that it still took me 35 minutes to get there on a Sunday with no real traffic issues so it can't be a "local" in terms of some place I'd like to stop by semi-regularly.

Picked up Clown Shoes Extremely Angry Beast, an Imperial Stout aged in bourbon and rum barrels. Looking forward to that. Really like their line of beers.

Secured a Surly 8 and Founders Backwoods Bastard 4-pack (I guess my store is only able to get one case of the Backwoods), both come out this coming week. I really love my store; they take good care of me. Also, they are on notice for the Goose Island BCS, and I will be getting 1-2 bottles of that.

I've heard good things about Clown Shoes and I'm hoping to snare some when I get home... apparently they themselves don't have a brewery and they're straight contract brew... which is disappointing.

Good to know backwoods bastard is out... one of the local businesses maintains a weekly blog post on the local arlington blog and mentioned it.

No. Friday was at a bar alone. You cannot order the same beer twice there. Too many selections. Saturday I was driving so I had to behave. Then you get me in a liquor store. I spent a small fortune. :)

Sunday, pre-game: An entire six-pack of Schlitz.

Sunday, during the game: A mini-bottle of Bacardi and a mini-bottle of Southern Comfort.

Boy, my drinking habits become a lot less interesting when football is involved.

Not so bad, really. All of that was spaced out between 4:30 and 10:00 or so (with the bulk of it happening before 7:00). A bit of a headache, but nothing that some ibuprofen and drinking water isn't helping me out with.

Darkness 2012 and 2013, Furious, and Damien Child of Darkness are on tap at a local bar today. Hopefully they're still there when I get off of work, only 5 gallons of each.

The Damien is underwhelming, relatively. Had that at the Autumn Brew Review in Mpls this fall.

Surly 8 is hitting my store(s) this Friday. My main store already said they'd set aside a bottle for me.

Founders Backwoods Bastard hit today. My 2nd store had a strict limit of 1 four-pack per customer, and they had it hidden away, and you had to specifically ask for it. My main store had it sitting out, but a 1 four-pack limit though. However, when I asked about the limit, they said they could probably sell me 2, due to the other higher-end stuff I buy there overall. :)

The Long Room actually The Saturday beers are from the Beer Authority.
Nice. I don't know Long Room, but a decent beer bar near Times Square is worth remembering, and anyplace that carries Leffe Brown and not just the Blonde is OK by me.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Ugh...

For some time now, Wiser's 18 yo has been $42 at one store that I frequent while all others had it for over $60. Been meaning to get a backup and now that store also has it at $64.

I really like it, but it's hard to go from $42 to $64 and I really don't have too many of anything that's over $40 a bottle.

Maybe 3 or 4 rums and the WRDO.

I found it by accident. We were meeting at Virgil's for dinner before the game, not my choice, I had time to kill before they showed and I happened to walk by, they had Ragin Bi**h on the board which I hadn't had before so I stopped in to kill an hour. They had a pretty extensive list of drafts, granted the two I had and a pumpkin ale were the only 3 I hadn't previously tried, not sure what their bottle list looked like.

WRDO is the only regular purchase of mine over $40. Everything else is one offs.

Wiser's would have been the second.

I've purchased a second bottle of Plantation 20 Year Anniversary.

Zacapa is getting low.

The rest of my spendy bottles are only touched every so often. I tend to drink most regularly in in the $20-$30 range.
