Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I'm just gonna say it...

I don't much care for bourbon.

I've tried, really I have. Just not my thing.

When I drink whiskey, it's either Canadian or Irish - probably makes sense as they are both closer to a rum experience.

You just need to find the bourbon that fits your palette. Sounds like you would have preferred an Elijah Craig 18 on the bourbon spectrum.

Maybe the New Holland Bourbon aged in beer barrels. Just throwing a dart there.

Not gonna hate.

Nor will I.

I understand that you folks are enjoying and picking up on nuances like I do with what I like.

I don't know, I've tried a bunch. I don't hate bourbon (I just don't love it and wouldn't choose it) and I do drink it when at a bar and it's the best of the available options - when they have crappy rum (nearly every bar everywhere) and no Irish.

I'll have a Maker's and Coke.

That's why I'm so excited when a bar has Bushmill's or Pendleton (bar in Rochester, MN had it last year).

Have had Maker's and of course Jack. Currently stock Elijah Craig 12yr, Woodford Double Oaked, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Johnny Drum (my "rail" bourbon which is well received by the Jack & Coke crowd).

WRDO is the best I have ever had.

hoo ho ho ho boooy. I almost jumped through the internet and knifed you.

:D

I've had it neat on two occasions. Planning on revisiting midwinter when the snow is blowing and the fire is going. :)

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I don't own any rums that aren't mixers, but when I get a nice one I won't mix it.

For me, Maker's Mark is not above being mixed. Its good, but it walks the line between mixing and neat. I also don't let Maker's Mark sit on my bar. The only thing I mix that is on my bar is my bottle of high-end vodka, and I make old-fashioneds with my bourbon. While old-fashioneds are technically a mixed drink, I put them in a different category, and I will use a much higher-end bourbon for an old-fashioned than I would mix with coke. My wife has a bottle of brandy on the bar, because she is from Wisconsin, and I don't know what she's planning to do with it, it hasn't been cracked yet. I plan on sticking to liquor that doesn't suck. Also, my single malts never get mixed. Ever. Don't care about blended garbage like Johnny Blue, mix that with coke, but don't let my single malt touch any of that cola!

Maker's makes a good Manhattan. Don't know if that counts as mixing (on the same order as with coke anyway) since it's still mainly a glass of bourbon.

Man, I have to not read this thread at lunchtime. It makes me want to take the afternoon off and go drink.

I have never had a Manhattan, but have had Old-Fashioneds, and you don't use crappy bourbon in those, even though it's a mixed drink. You need to have a very decent bourbon to make a good one.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

There's a serious lack of good beer here, so I think I'm resigned to booze which fortunately there is a good selection and it's cheaper than home. For instance - and this is just an example but not something I bought - Johnny Walker Red 750 is about $12, but I did pick up a bottle of Maker's Mark for about $22. I prefer unmixed, although I'm not against adding more than ice when inclined.

But with all that opium, who needs good Bourbon?

Drew Magary had a terrible cocktail today...

He's been retweeting other terrible drinks that people have sent to him. Pretty funny stuff.

Here's a list he put together: http://deadspin.com/great-moments-in-horrible-cocktail-failures-1645287065

WHY would you even TRY that? It's totally different!

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

OK, I have a question and a comment.

I have this bottle of absinthe that one of my daughters, now 24, left behind. A while back I posted a question asking you guys how to drink absinthe, since Nodaks don't know about this kind of stuff. You say there's a spoon you're supposed to use to pour the absinthe over a sugar lump. I find a spoon too--more like two spoons actually, with a second spoon half way down the handle with holes in it. This has to be for sugar lumps to use with absinthe, I figure, based on what you guys tell me.

Well, tonight I'm done with a taxing day of home improvement and want some absinthe. Quite a bit of absinthe. We don't consume sugar in our house, so there's no way I'll find a sugar lump. So I just pour some absinthe, stir in a packet of Splenda (through the spoon with holes in it just to follow procedure), add some water, and down the hatch. It was good. Question: When I die, will I go to a place in hell reserved for classless idiots?

The Comment part. While I'm making the home improvements I mentioned above, I find a funny looking bottle in one of my daughters' closet. Different daughter than the absinthe drinker--this one's a senior in college. This bottle is made of all kinds of colors and has a hose leading to it. My kids are real health conscious, so I've decided this must be some way to blow oxygen into water (or some other health drink) to oxygenate it so it is healthier to drink. My kids are perfect and would think of something like this. Not like other people's kids.

Certainly heard about some of the things to do with absinthe. Far as I understand the purpose of sugar is to better the taste so I'm sure in some circles, yes, you'll be tortured in some purist hell. That being said, if you cook at all why the heck couldn't you find real sugar?

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I finally found Polish Moon by Milwaukee Brewing Company. Light for a stout, but not bad. Maybe the 5 pack will still be left for next weekend. Ok, a 3 pack.
