Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Pansies. :p:D

Oh yeah, and Bushmill's Black is actually called "Black Bush." Gotta get me some Black Bush soon. ;)

Almost pulled the trigger yesterday, but need to finish another bottle first.

Also - what's a good bourbon for mixing (already have Double Oaked for the rare guest that wants something neat)?

Should be something that the Jack & Coke type would like, but isn't Jack or something that's expensive enough that you'd cringe a bit when someone wants to mix it.

I know we talked about bourbon previously, but I'm looking for a quality (but not premium) mixer this time.

Evan Williams. Tastes like Jack. Looks like Jack (even the bottle). Half the price of Jack. The single barrel Evan runs about $20-22 around here.

It's proabably a re-labeled bottle of Jack, just like how Bailey's sells itself under the Carolyn's name in order to capture another (cheaper) segment of the market.

Doubtful.

Jack's mash bill is 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye
EW's mash bill is 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye

Close, but not quite the same.

Edit: Actually, I'm seeing 75, 12, 13 for EW from another source. So I'm not 100% sure which is correct.

I thought the same thing (Bailey's/Carolyn's) but from what I could find they are two different distilleries. I dunno how, because I bet Jack has trademarks on that style, but who knows?

I don't think you can trademark a mash bill. Besides, I'm guessing they have trade secret techniques, temperatures, pressures, oak sources, char level, etc that make it unique and very difficult to reproduce.

My bad. I was talking the bottle/design/etc.

After reading a few additional reviews online, went with the EW Single for the shelf and found that my store once again carries Johnny Drum (which I've stocked for a few years and my buddy just killed my last bottle of on Monday), so I grabbed a bottle of that for the "rail" bourbon.

Had a bomber of Brash Brewing Biggie Smalls. Its a brown ale blend, aged in rum barrels and other barrels, etc. It is extremely good. If you like barrel aged beers, buy this.

Girliest hard liquor that you can drink while still seeming somewhat manly? My vote: southern comfort.

Some would say vodka, depending on the drink. But otherwise, SoCo is a solid choice.

Local distiller just went public with their first bourbon today. Pike Street Bourbon. I'm not enough of a connoisseur to comment either way. I like Makers 46 and I have a fairly respectable assortment of bourbons and whiskeys and Scotch. I like this bourbon and I really think this company is on to something. For the record, I tend to start off my drinks with a little coke and then switch to strictly on the rocks later. The only potential issue? $40.00. The price point seems a little steep for something without a track record but I'm a fan of the little guy and I will $upport them.

I usually adjust 20% or so for super small distilleries as to price. Currently drinking a 45th Parallel Border Bourbon (New Richmond, WI; about $48 for a bottle) and it's delicious and I'm a repeat customer. I'll pay extra to support the little guy if the product is good.

Panther Distillery. They have a listing of stores that carry their product on their website. Give them a shot.

For the record, their White Water Whiskey is pure gas. It's a product they could make quick while the real whiskey and bourbon was aging.

I've almost pulled the trigger on their product, but am unsure, and that is based purely on your (self-admitted non-expert) recommendation. What is their best product? I will probably pull that trigger sooner rather than later if I know the exact name of their best.

Do these companies have distilleries in Bourbon County, KY, or are they just calling their whiskeys bourbons?
