Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome!

I've almost pulled the trigger on their product, but am unsure, and that is based purely on your (self-admitted non-expert) recommendation. What is their best product? I will probably pull that trigger sooner rather than later if I know the exact name of their best.

The whiskey is Minnesota 14 and the bourbon is Pike Street. Like anything else it's either a love it or hate it............

Ah, but if their best is not good....why bother with the rest? ;)

Have taken note, and will keep an eye out.

Read the book titled Minnesota 13. Great history of MN (especially central MN) during prohibition. Did you know central MN had the highest concentration of federal agents compared to the rest of the country during the prohibition? Central MN moonshine was affectionately called Minnesota 13 and was legendary and was the prized moonshine of the time. The monks at St. John's had the best recipe and the recipe died with one of the monks. It would be worth big bucks today.......

Be careful with craft distilleries as a fairly large percentage buy their whiskey from the same place in Indiana and just repackage it and mark it up, though of course they don't exactly publicise this. I think the big Indiana distillery is called ABM. Not sure how to link to articles here with my phone but a google search will kick up all sorts of info on it.

Speaking of which, anyone ever try their hand at home distilling?

Heard of the IN thing. gmann: will check out the book. Might have to wait, as I just dropped some money on Amazon, which included "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die."

Definitely not the case with 45th Parallel, since we toured their distillery I'm sure it exists. They said that they actually do some contract distilling for other brands.

That is an excellent book, makes me want to travel to Europe just to drink

Biggie Smalls, AKA The Notorious B.I.G., was a rapper until he found the sharp end of a bullet back in the mid-90's.
Better than a hollow point, I guess.

Sittin' in the bed of my truck, in someone's driveway I don't know, listening to Church, drinking a lowland single malt out of the bottle.

Nice. There are plenty of places that do make all their own stuff but the whole repackaging thing is prominent enough to keep an eye out for if the goal is to find quality product made in small batches from local ingredients and so forth.

Whiskey certainly seems the most popular in this thread but has anyone tried any of the gins made by Vikre out of Duluth? Should have tried some when I was back but I didn't. I'm sure they're good but I'm wondering if they're $34.99 good. Sharp looking bottle, I'll give them that much...

Not a gin guy. At. All. I heard about the distillery, and have heard good reviews from the Star Tribune, though.

And the key to the small batch stuff is looking for the "bottled by" or "distilled by" info.

Panther Distillery. They have a listing of stores that carry their product on their website. Give them a shot.

For the record, their White Water Whiskey is pure gas. It's a product they could make quick while the real whiskey and bourbon was aging.

They were at a local booze shop and I tried a few of their products:
You're dead on with WWW. Their Minnesota 14 was ok. I didn't get to try their bourbon since their first batch isn't done aging yet. Their Spiked Apple was pretty good and I bought a bottle. Figured it would be decent drinking straight in the winter or mixing it with cider or something else.

Edit: Their gin was also ok, but has potential.

I just recently finished off my bottle of Border Bourbon from 45th Parallel Distillery. It's right up there with the best. Which is amazing because it's not aged for something like three years. Part of what makes it unique might be short aging period. You really taste the grains but not in a bad way.

I agree with everything you posted.

The WWW was only made because it was a quick thing to produce while the other stuff aged. Plain and simple it's moonshine. Their gin is actually pretty good. The Spiked Apple is a decent sipping liquor. I think the whiskey is ok. IMHO the bourbon will be the flagship product. My issue is the price point. In other states (especially California where his product is flying off the shelf) the price is in range but here in MN it's a bit steep for a product that needs a little refining.

I have gotten to know the owner and he is definitely in this for the long haul. He's a great guy and I'm pulling for him.

In fact.........I just poured his bourbon mixed with a little coke.

Wait, they told me at the liquor store they are aging their first batch of bourbon right now...

Second question: Why is this stuff getting massive penetration in California and why had I never heard of them before this past week?

Third Question: What's the price of a 750 of their bourbon?

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Oh, and about their gin, while I said it was ok, it was definitely something that was well-made. I'd still prefer Tanqueray. But Panther's is very clean and would have made a decent G&T. If they tweaked the recipe a bit, I'd have zero issues making it my go to. I'm trying to remember what 45th Parallel's was like, but I can't quite remember.

Their intent was to launch the bourbon late August or early September.

California is a huge market. Lots of people that like booze. I wouldn't call it massive penetration in CA but supposedly CA is the place to be if you want to move product. They have been marketing locally for the past two years or so. I imagine that they will slowly be increasing their efforts. Expect to see billboards soon. To get a distillery operational requires big bucks and then you have to wait as the stuff ages in a barrel (that's why WWW was rolled out) let alone the money required to market at a decent level. The owner has a plan and I am excited to see it roll out. Other than that.........I can't help it if you live under a rock. ;)

750 is $40.00.
