Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

So I want to kill this bottle of Pyrat X.O. Rum. On my third (and final) tonight and with the Hawks game tomorrow, should knock it down even more. Plan on focussing on this till it's gone.

Want the (empty) bottle for something else and need open space on the shelf for some rums I have my eyes on. Don't plan on restocking it. Good rum, but nothing that I have to have on hand. Was a gift - quite a nice gift actually.

Wanna get the Flor de Cana Centenario 12 year and also have my eyes on the Cruzan Single Barrel Rum. The latter has a $7.50 rebate on any Cruzan 750ml bottle which would knock it down to $18. Can't pass that up!

The 1.75 of Cruzan Light or Gold have a $10 rebate. $10 final price for 1.75 of a very decent everyday rum. Hell, a good everyday rum.

I'll be stocking up!

Oh yeah and it's a GORGEOUS night on the front porch.

Probably 78 and no bugs.

Why don't I live where it's like this all the time?

EDIT: Just starting to sprinkle. Perfection. :)

Any opinions on Zaya 12 year rum? I keep seeing it at Festival's liquor department.

Yeah, I see that one too and I haven't pulled the trigger on it. Reviews that I've read on it are very favorable but always mention how much vanilla and caramel taste there is. Zaya is probably more suited for sipping than mixing - which is probably what it's intended for.

I enjoy a sweet rum, but not too sweet as those tend to border on spiced rum (to my palate)- which I don't care for. In addition, I usually combine my rum with something sweet and it can be overpowering if the rum is already syrupy.

At the price point that Zaya sits, I'm not willing to take a shot at it - although it's hard for me not to in a way. I want to try them all. :o

There are a number of rums in the $30-$40 price range though that are ahead of it in the queue.

:D

This is actually a site that I will often start with when researching rum reviews:

http://therumhowlerblog.wordpress.com/rum-reviews/

Guy is kind of a nerd, but I find that I agree with him pretty often.

When in a store and I find a rum that I'm unfamiliar with, I will start with his site and proceed from there.

His review of Big Black Dick Dark Caribbean Rum is pretty funny - in a rum nerd sorta way.

Oh yeah and I don't care if it's crappy rum, I need a bottle of that. :D

Proof 66 is where I start with all spirits. I typically look for individual reviews via google if that's what I'm looking for, but generally speaking, I'll just buy the d amn thing and review it myself. :D

I know I had said that I would concentrate on that Pyrat, but I couldn't resist trying the new bottle that I got.

Plantation Grand Reserve 5yo Barbados Rum

Very nice at the $20 price point. A very fine everyday variety of Plantation.

Doesn't have the complexity of their others, but is quite tasty.

Now going back to the Pyrat as I have a goal to accomplish.

Started with a couple of rum & Cokes (Cruzan Gold & Angostura 5yo) but the order came in for enchiladas for dinner so I switched to a marg on the rox with El Jimidor and Patron Citronge.

Have I mentioned that I make an outstanding marg....?

First day off in a long while. Breaking into some Rye of the Tiger from Great lakes. It is my favorite RyePA and this year it does not disappoint. Will probably finish off the night with some MKE Brewing Company brews and maybe some home brews.

I would love a margarita but Gurth would put me to shame so I do not see the point in even trying ;)

Chillwave is an excellent DIPA I received a 4 pack in a trade back in early April and really enjoyed it.

I was lucky enough to find it on tap. I'm going back to that bar next week, in hopes they still have it.

Great Lakes Brewing is the best thing Ohio's got going on. :D However, that's their only brew that gives Edmund Fitzgerald Porter a run for its money. The rest of their beers are merely 'good' - at least, the ones available regionally in bottles.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Went and toured Cigar City Brewery the other day with a couple friends. Got to taste a couple specialty beers straight from the fermenter. They took their Maduro brown ale, and added coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Was quite tasty, it is called Cubano Espresso. Also tasted a black IPA, which is a newer style of beer. Wasn't as big of a fan of it, but I generally am not an IPA fan. I'm sure it would be pretty good for somebody who is.

They also have a collaboration beer with Great Lakes called the Wandering Pelican, a black ale rated at 8.5%. Didn't get a chance to try it, but worth keeping an eye out.

Haha they are both familiar. I have seen them on rounds but luckily have avoided rounding with them directly. I say luckily because cardiologists tend to "pimp the ****" out of medical students ;) Both are pretty high up on the food chain so most of the classroom teaching falls to more junior faculty.

I hope your son is doing well.
