Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome!

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

I haven't had rum in years. In college I drank Bacardi and Mountain Dew.

By default I have quite a collection of booze. Most of my stuff is bourbon, whiskey and scotch. Last night I tapped a bottle of Black Maple Hill bourbon. It's ok.

Crown is my number one because we have a twenty year love affair but Makers 46 is a very close second. ;)

We have a local distiller here in my neck of the woods that barreled some stuff two years ago. It's now ready and it's a whiskey called Minnesota 14. Keep an eye on this stuff as the owner has a impressive plan and his intentions are to be a big player. Panther distillery.

Tonight's beer is Founder's Red Rye IPA. Very good.

-shudder-

That sounds horrible and have never heard of anyone drinking that before.

Reminds me of the first time I got wasted to the point that I yacked - on three floors of my parents house no less. We mixed some So Com with a 2 liter of warm Mello Yellow. Went down pretty well after the first few swigs and eventually I was chugging.

Next day, didn't wanna admit that I'd been drinking and blamed it on a bad cheeseburger. They still give me crap about the cheeseburger 27 years later.

They made me clean up a three areas of yack including said cheeseburger remnants.

I don't believe I've had Southern Comfort or for that matter, Mello Yellow since.

Had a cheeseburger for lunch today though...

:D

Drinking the Sundog now. For an amber ale, it's pleasant, but I think I like Bell's a little more.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Speaking of Mountain Dew, in high school we would mix Malibu and Mountain Dew. Only the coconut scent would be detected and some other girl in the group would say it was their lotion.

I preferred, in college, Wild Cherry Pepsi and Vodka. The wild cherry would throw off the vodka smell. If you saw me carrying a bottle of wild cherry, the probability of there being vodka in there was high.

Pretty solid beer night tonight! Started out with Terrapin Rye Pale Ale, Jai Alai, Gandhi Bot(WOW), Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout, Mass Rising, Flower Power, and Jackie O's Mystic Mama!

How was the coffee stout?

Those are my 2 favorite things: coffee and stout beer.

If he is referring to the Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee Stout, good luck on getting it. It's as difficult as the Founder's KBS to get (comes out once a year, etc). I got 2 12oz bottles last year, and a buddy got 2 of the regular BCS. We traded one bottle of each to each other. Both are absolutely f*ing phenomenal.

Edit: it also runs about $6/bottle.

It was excellent, but I think I prefer the regular BCBS over the Coffee and there wasn't much of a difference.

How cold was it? It makes a big difference in taste. I started mine right from the fridge, purposely took about an hour to drink, and you could easily tell the changes in taste to each beer as it warmed up.

Actually the guy I traded with said he paid $8.99 a piece for the BCBCS which is insane! I can still buy BCBS around here for $17 a 4 pack, but I'm glad I got to try BCBCS and I still have two left although I'm willing to trade for some Surly. :D

My beer fridge has an electronic control and I keep it at 50 degrees. I definitely agree it gets better as it warms, but the coffee notes weren't as prevalent as I thought they would be.

If I were closer to Maine.....

$9 is indeed insane. But.....I'd probably pay it to get 4 of them.

Example: a store I called about the KBS didn't know what it was, and said that it was a 1 case minimum order for them. I said, "I'll buy it all." After seeing the price, they were REALLY confused, and called the distributor on my behalf. They couldn't get it, they weren't a big enough account quite yet, but expected to be there next year. You know dam well I'll be calling next year, trying to buy all they can get. I don't care what I have to pay. :)

Edit: my fridge is a normal one, and by the time I took my last sip, the beer was just about room temp. And still tasty.

I bought this about 6 months ago one of my better investments and you can rearrange the shelves to fit bombers etc. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Igloo-Beverage-Wine-Center-Black/31136427

I was able to get 16 KBS no problem around here again because in this part of Maine craft beer isn't a hobby so it's trade bait for me. ;)

1. I have to keep that in mind. In a year or two, I'll have a Man Cave to build.
2. Same with the store I called. The average clientele thinks that Surly is the ultimate snob beer "fer folks that ain't like us." ;) This store also somehow got about 5 cases of HopSlam, and those sat there for at least a week (in the Mpls area, stores sold out of that usually within the hour).

In Maine they think Sam Adams is the snob beer at least north of Portland. LOL I've gotten Hopslam from two different trades and I actually like it with about 3 months of age on versus fresh. I've never had any Surly and from everything I've read it's fantastic across the board.

I'm the wrong guy to ask on that for their regular beers, since I'm not a hops guy. The Bender is about as far as I go. For special releases, the Syxx and the SeVIIn are awesome. The Darkness is on another level.

Abrasive, Darkness, Wet, and Furious are the big 4. Too bad they weren't around to drown my sorrows when I was out there in 2002!
