Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome!

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

The regular Woodford is overrated. Give me Maker's 46, Yellow Rose Blended or Outlaw, and Four Roses Small Batch/Single Barrel (both of them) over that anyday

Really? It's my absolute go to. I'm not a fan of Maker's Mark but I haven't had 46 so I can't comment there. I've never had Yellow Rose or Outlaw either. The Four Roses Small/Single are typically at a higher price point than WRDS I thought. For whatever reason, I get a very pleasant buzz on WRDS than I do with any other non-WR bourbon. Can't explain it.

The WRDO, on the other hand, is my #1 bourbon of all time (as of now). Fairly cheap and I'd put it up against many other bourbons twice the cost. Now, as soon as I get my Stagg and Pappy (I don't think I'd go for the 23, maybe something a bit easier on the wallet, diminishing returns and whatnot) I'll see what happens. But among the readily available, it's not even a question.

I just saw a billboard today for a MN flavored vodka company, Prairie, I think. Any rate, one of the three flavors on the billboard was cucumber. Why cucumber? I don't know of a single drink that uses cucumber nor would I expect it to taste good at all.

Cucumber water is a thing now. So, apparently, is cucumber vodka.

That sounds like a horrible thing. Both of them.

It is. I never liked the taste of cucumbers. I have stayed a couple hotels where they have cucumber water in the lobby. My kid loves it, I can't stand it.

Dear God, but I make a great margarita...

Tonight, 1800 Blanco & Patron Citronge on the rocks.

Mmmmmmm...

:)

Going perfectly with my enchilada dinner.

What are your ratios?

1.5 oz tequilla
1 oz Triple Sec or tonight, Patron
3 oz Marg mix, lime juice, whatever you prefer.

Personally, I don't love lime juice and go with the marg mix.

Shake and pour over rocks.

On my third...

Started the night at a Mexi restaurant just down the road and the bartender gave us a sample of a jalapeno marg with fresh jalapenos and agave juice. It was surprisingly (to me, anyway) awesome.

You probably chase that with a Ranch Shot

Interesting. I make mine strong (but they also are close to the IBA specs for a margarita). Half tequila, quarter lime juice (fresh), quarter Cointreau.

Sounds almost like a Margarita Perfecta.

I don't mind a strong drink and I've certainly had strong margs, but this is my perfect proportions. Can certainly taste the booze but not overpowering. Perfect blend to my taste.

I worked for several years as a bartender in a Mexi restaurant through college, but that was so long ago that I cannot remember if this was the recipe back then or not.

When I make them for others' consumption, I dilute it down quite a bit with lime or use mix. The mix is very popular among my drinking fiends who like margaritas.

On a side note, goddammit. Now I want a margarita...

New Holland Brewing Paleooza. It's one of their seasonal beers, so I wanted to try it. Also picked up a sixer of their Sundog Amber Ale. It's a lighter beer, so I hope I won't be disappointed.

Just chilling with a Buffalo Sweat Vanilla Bean Stout. It should be disappearing off the shelves soon, as it's a seasonal.

Re: Drinking Thread: Beer, Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Wine - Raise a Glass, All Are Welcome

Moved on from Margaritas and having some Clement VSOP Agricole Rhum.

This is a French style rhum which means it's made from sugar cane juice rather than molasses. I'm trying to appreciate this type of rum (rhum), but it has a very different taste from the rums that I like more, which are the more traditional molasses-based aged rums. Not just the sweet ones either.

By review, Clement is a highly regarded variety of these, but I'm more tolerating it than enjoying it. Not sweet like traditional gold rums would be and has an odd aftertaste. This is not the only variety of this type (rhum agricole) that I've had... Rhum Barbancourt is the same type and to be honest I feel that Appleton and Plantation 2000 Old Reserve taste very similar.

Hard to describe the difference, but it's similar to how bourbon is different from whiskey. I also don't love bourbon because of the odd (to my palate) aftertaste.

I'll keep trying though as I am a trooper. :D:p
