Drank some very poorly made manhattans at a wedding this past weekend. Oh well, you get what you pay for.

I had an absolutely excellent manhattan last night. Made with Woodford Reserve. Granted, it was a $20 drink at a very nice restaurant. :p


I have my beer list ready for my True Detective/National Championship viewing party on Saturday.

I took the unusual step of discarding some of the booze that I've bought over the years and not liked.

It took some self-convincing, but six bottles were emptied down the sink and two rums were put in the kitchen pantry to be used exclusively for cooking.

Part of this was due to finally getting some shelves above the wet bar and realizing that the collection is in fact a bit excessive. So got rid of the dead weight.

Jees, you could have at least sold it to high school kids! :p

I have some bottles of questionable crap in the cupboard that may need to be passed along. Apple Brandy....Raspberry Schnapps....yuck

When my kid's friends are over (14-16 yo) they look at the collection with pretty wide eyes and I get the feeling they think I'm a raging alcoholic.

I also get the impression that they can't wait for the day that my boy has a house party. Not sure how I'm gonna avert that.

But again, you get what you pay for. The wife and I tried a new restaurant on Friday and I enjoyed a Paper Aeroplane (you know it's good because the name is spelled olde-tyme-like), with Bulleit bourbon, aperol and amaro.

It's driving me nuts. I really love the Edel Pils from New Glarus, but can never find it. According to their website, it's a "beer we have known and loved", which makes me think they don't make it anymore. But then again, it's listed there along with their Marzen, so what do I know?

On a similar note: Fat Squirrel is probably their best non-specialty beer, and that's listed as a seasonal. Get it together, New Glarus!

I like their Fat Squirrel, but have you had their new one, the Coffee Stout? That one is excellent. I don't know if it will be a regular beer or if it is seasonal or just a limited time specialty one. Several of their regular beers are not that great as far as I'm concerned, but others are very good. I just try to remember which ones to avoid.

Overall, my favorite beer that New Glarus makes is their Belgian Red. It comes in a bomber, and it is flavored with cherries. You have to be a fan of fruit beers, almost to the point of being a lambic, but **** if that isn't a tasty beer.

The Coffee Stout has been around for many years. It's seasonal and I seem to recall a winter or two when it wasn't around, but that could have been due to the store more than the brewery. One of my favorite stout beers.

Agree with both of you on the Fat Squirrel. One of my favs of theirs along with the Coffee Stout.

EODS - I'll look here if I remember just to see if it's stocked or not.

Hmmm, This year was the first I'd seen the coffee stout, so I thought it was new. I guess I just wasn't looking in the right places in the past. Regardless, it is some pretty tasty stuff.

In addition to the fact that it's seasonal, I recall years where I would have to look in several stores before I could find it - even amongst stores that regularly carry their product.

Mine will depend on if MN somehow doesn't win on Thu. Nothing is set, yet, due to not purchasing some of the stuff.

If they win:

Class of '88 (which I'm getting from you for a bottle of the Abyss)
Orkney Dark Island Reserve
Lime-A-Rita
Le Fleur Misseur Lips Of Faith
Oskar Blues Ten Fidy/Dragon's Milk (game-day decision)

If MN isn't playing, then take out the Orkney and prob Class of '88, and add some Lagunitas Shutdown Ale or Oskar Blues Old Chub.

Had the Ommegang Game of Thrones Fire and Blood tonight. Very good beer. I'm going to try to find a couple more bottles.

I think the store in Delano has a couple bottles. I'll keep my eye out for stores around here.

What's your favorite crappy beer? (Definition: any beer that you can reliably find a 6-pack for $6 or less)

At this point, I'm leaning towards Schlitz.
