Scientists have discovered a powerful new antibiotic they say can kill an array of germs without the bugs easily becoming resistant to it, a potential weapon against a range of diseases.

The discovery is a rare—and much-needed—breakthrough in the quest for new antibiotics to overcome the problem of growing resistance to existing drugs. While the new compound was shown to be safe and effective in mice, scientists need to determine whether this is the case for people.

The discovery of the new class of antibiotic, called teixobactin, was reported Wednesday in the journal Nature. It was uncovered by screening 10,000 bacterial strains from soil. Teixobactin will be investigated further in animals before being tested in people.

If all goes well, “we’ll be in clinical trials two years from now,” said Kim Lewis, a professor at Northeastern University in Boston and lead author of the study. Human trials could take two to three years, he added.

I wish I had more friends I could have these kinds of absurd and super nerdy discussions with. Most of my good friends look at me like the want to jab a pencil through my eye when I even try.

One of my coworkers and I have these kinds of wacky discussions at lunch. Always a good time.

Treasure the ones who get it. Since I changed industries I have met exactly zero co-workers who would begin to appreciate it, whereas in college I'd say 90% of my freshman dorm wouldn't just have loved it, but could have probably written it.

Neither of them are on the table. I came up with the same letters, then saw your post, and checked just to be sure because no scientist am I. Sure enough, they're not present on the table.

Between his SpaceX project, Tesla, and whatever other awesome ideas he's got... I kinda wish I could work for him! He's a real life Tony Stark / Bruce Wayne.

I'd take a serious pay cut to work for him. It may all be BS, but dude seems to be the closest thing to the "I don't care about your rules" Heinleinian idealistic whiz kid-turned-entrepreneur we've had since Jobs. Can you think of anybody else in the business world who is even not revolting, let alone inspirational? Buffet, maybe. That's about it.
