Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

No worries.

Gurt, you tried? I was right! ;)

I admitted I was trolling. Should have been transparent. I enjoy watching **** burn. :D

I thought that you thought that I actually believed what the OP thought.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

So I ask, do you like college hockey or do you just like your own team and couldn't care less about the sport?

Good Question. Here is my $0.02.

I can only speak for myself and those around me but my thought is that hockey is a pretty small community. In Minnesota at least, a large number of fans are attached to the game through more than just being a fan of the game. What I mean by that is that lots of us are involved directly. I try to make Gopher games when I can, but can tell you had I been in town last week and had the time, I would have tried to attend the game and skipped the Lowell-Merrimack game. Not because I am not a fan, but because I would have been at some other game. The reason I didn't go to the games last week was that I was at an out of town tournament for my oldest son. So last weekend I attended and watched 10 games between my boys games and games that impacted their next round tourney games. Over the last 12 months, I have attended over 100 games easily but only 2 Gopher games and 1 Wild game (that was with clients). The games I attend are youth games where I both coach and spectate as well as high school games in my community. I would guess that at least here in Minnesota, there are a lot of us who can say the same thing. I am amazed at how many people without kids playing will attend a PeeWee game. My kids play youth association hockey, AAA summer hockey and periodic select tournaments, I coach my kids, play men's league and serve on our local association board and manage one of my boys AAA teams. I am not saying any of that to sound like Mr. Hockey because I was and continue to be an average player and hockey mind at best. But there are a lot of fans here that have lots of time into the game in other areas that essentially precludes us from buying a ticket or watching a team that doesn't directly impact us. As I get older and have fewer kids games and play less, I suspect that I will try to take in more games including those that don't feature teams that I normally watch but that is just as likely to be going to a Hibbing vs. Grand Rapids HS game or a White Bear Lake vs. Stillwater PeeWee AA game as is would be a Lowell-Merrimack game. Not sure how it is in other hotbed states like Michigan or Massachusetts, but I would guess they have similarities to the Minnesota model I reference above.

My friends and I were considering taking in a game or two during the North Star cup until further research showed it to be taking place the opening week of Winter Carnival and also butting up against the Crashed Ice thing at the Cathedral. Also didn't like the 2 games 1 session format. I think they should dump the Mariucci classic and move the cup tourney up a week or two..

I'd like to see them integrate the North Star College Cup with Hockey Day Minnesota. I'm with you, ditch the Mariucci Classic and make this happen.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

Is anyone else almost sad that this turned into a reasonable discussion of how stupid in season tournaments are (aside from the GLI and the Beanpot) when it could have turned into a delightful flame war involving the Gophers?
I really need to get more sleep.

I feel this may have started with a comment of mine in the Lowell thread... so if we can get some Lowell-Gopher hate going maybe more people will show up next time :p

And a good ol' 2 for 2 scheduling agreement is always nice any time you pansies are man enough to show up. :) ;) :p

While as a fan I would love to see a 2-for-2 scheduling agreement with Lowell, please find a way to televise the games if we do come out to play you. Waited a while to see the Gophers play at BC again, then didn't even get to see it.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

Why would the timing of the Winter Carnival and Crashed Ice cause you to avoid the NS Cup?

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

To answer the original question, I love hockey. Yes, I have my favorite teams, but Mrs. 86 and I have NHL Center Ice, so when we get home from work, we watch hockey all night, regardless of whether our favorite teams are playing or not. Last night we turned on the gold medal game of World Juniors on the NHL Channel.

Parking, Crowded bars and restaurants and apathy toward's this team. I loved the Final five and never missed a game from it's inception. But, I have a hard time getting excited about this tourney, and apparently, so do my friends. Also, I'm getting old and have turned into a freeze baby and it's cold in Jan.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

To answer the original question, yes I'm a fan of college hockey in general. Although I'm a graduate of UVM and a rabid fan, the place where I used to live in Vermont was very close to Hanover, NH and Dartmouth college. Although I'm not much of a fan of Dartmouth hockey, going back to UVM's old ECAC days, I would regularly pop over to Hanover to get my college hockey fix. Apparently they don't believe in heat at Thompson Arena, so on bitterly cold nights my family and I would absolutely freeze watching the games. If that's not being a college hockey fan, I don't know what is.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

College hockey is OK, I guess, and I did graduate from UND so I like their team. But what I really like is the people on this board. They're really knowledgeable about things other than hockey, like God and the supreme court, and movies. And they are nice. They never make fun of me like people in the real world do whenever I leave the house. I would like to marry someone from USCHO and raise little USCHO kids and teach them about D1 hockey and café topics.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

I love to travel to many rinks across the country. I am a NEWBIE here so I enjoy talking about all the teams in college hockey. Also, enjoy following all the programs in every league. I am not a fan of any team but I enjoy all college teams in D1. I am glad to be able to talk to many fans from all the teams in hockey. This fan board is new to me so I am learning still. I love talking to all my friends about hockey.

But some posters are so stubborn that they only want to hear what they want to hear. I just wish some posters would let newbies in but they just like to repeat themselves over and over. Sometime posting on here is like trying to turn around on a one way street or taking one step foward and then taking two steps backwards.

This forum will not let newbies post.

Re: Do you like hockey, or do you just like "your" team?

Just noticed this thread. Glad it turned into a (mostly) good conversation. Hope my take adds a little to the previous comments.

This is spot on. The amount of sports programming available at home has absolutely exploded in recent years, and the quality of the video has become increasingly impressive. People won't buy tickets to see the event live unless they'll experience something they can't get in the sports den. Sitting in a mostly empty arena, quietly watching a game? Same thing as watching at home, just more expensive and less convenient.

Fans of the sport certainly still exist. We do attend games as neutrals. As just one example, we make up roughly half the crowd at the Men's Frozen Four.

But in general, neutrals attend at venues where a large and/or fun crowd is expected. And once an particular event gets a bad reputation in this regard, it's tough to shake. Fans decide not to return because it's no fun. Then, because so many make that decision, the event remains no fun. Vicious cycle.

In-season tournaments are an especially tough sell. And this is a national issue, certainly not limited to the Mariucci Classic. A few years back OSU attempted to stage a holiday tournament over the course of several seasons; first at Nationwide, then later on campus at the Schott. It just couldn't gain any traction. The tournament never had any sort of theme fans could connect with. The dates over the holidays were problematic. Sound familiar?

One positive was that Miami was included for a while. My thought at the time was that Miami and BG should have been included every year, along with one outside team to round out the field. In other words, patterned after the GLI. That would have had a chance at survival, IMHO.

I'd like to see them integrate the North Star College Cup with Hockey Day Minnesota. I'm with you, ditch the Mariucci Classic and make this happen.
Excellent idea. It's a challenge to establish new traditions, but I think this concept genuinely has a chance.

As for those who regularly attend the Beanpot and the GLI, you should jealously guard those events. Establishing such traditions has never been tougher.

A young lass with a love for hockey

Crossed a fellow named burd from UND

When she spilled water on his toes,

He shot her a left on the nose

And she remarked, "That's the Whioux-boy for me!"

There was a hockey fan named McBadgerton
Who met a lass who was quite a simpleton
He liked her in red
But she just wanted to be fed
So he married her and raised McLittleones
