Division I Rutter Rankings for 2012-2013

Re: Division I Rutter Rankings for 2012-2013

I just want to thank you for your kind wishes of hope. We certainly couldn't have done it without your positive energy and goodwill. It's so great to see such wonderful sportsmanship on this board...... or NOT!

NICE!!!!!! ZZZZZZZZZiiiinngGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!
Are we allowed to agree with both the Wisconsin team and Mercyhurst schedule assessments?

Re: Division I Rutter Rankings for 2012-2013

Maybe there should be a special NCAA rule that disqualifies a team from participating in the NCAA tournament if they lose 3 times to RMU, call it the personal pride rule. Sort of like the time that Notre Dame declined an invitation to a bowl game after an embarrassing season. All kidding aside the MC schedule was a joke, 3 loses to RMU, 12 games against Lindenwood, Penn State, and RIT. Someone explain again the criticism of the WCHA teams that played LW twice.

Or maybe you just move on...........................:D

Why don't you go badger someone who cares!

Nice one Ice. :) Keep on dancing and have that positive outlook. Might see ya Saturday. You going. ?

It was only a matter of time, not if, when GDS would chime in. Interesting to note it took a lot longer this year, as they have much less legs to stand on than in years past. We can thank Gopher nation for that. :D

This is confusing. Is one bias point of view more meritorious than another?

Throw out all of the biased points of view and go by the objective view, Dr. Rutter's own rankings.

Just pondering what a fun tournament that would have been! Allowing for Mercyhurst's auto-bid, we would have:

#1 Minnesota vs. #8 Mercyhurst
#4 Boston University vs. #5 Wisconsin

#2 Cornell vs. #7 Harvard
#3 North Dakota vs. #6 Boston College

I guess the Gophers would still probably face off against North Dakota, only it would be for the Championship. ;)

Fixed your bracket; the CHA doesn't have an autobid this year, and probably not next year either.

Thanks, I must have read that a dozen times on the forum but it still didn't sink in!

I'd swap Harvard & BC to avoid the intraconference matchup. The teams are all close enough.

Re: Division I Rutter Rankings for 2012-2013

While it is still early for Rutter, figured now is a good time to bring this back to the front.

Uncertainty ranks appear to be up and current:

Many more details, including the rest of the teams, explanation of the ratings, a cool graph, and much (OK, not that much) more can be found here:

FAQ

Q. [Insert team here, like Cornell] hasn't played a game yet. How can they be ranked?
A. The power of Bayesian statistics. Each team has a prior rating based on last year, so early season rankings are possible. As more games are played, the effect of the prior is reduced.

Q. Is home ice advantage included?
A. No. Although I have estimates of home ice advantage for both the entire division and for each team, they are not included in these rankings. It emulates the NCAA criteria in this respect.

Q. Is margin of victory (MOV) included?
A. No, just wins, losses, and ties. Again, the NCAA doesn't use margin of victory and since the games are low scoring, I haven't found a satisfactory way to include MOV.

Q. How do you include ties?
A. If you look at the web page, you will see how ties are included. In short, I estimate a region that includes a probability of a tie which is larger when the teams are closely ranked. No "tie is half a win, half a loss" simplification here.

Q. How does your method compare to RPI?
A. The two are very different. I think my system (and KRACH) are a much better reflection of the quality of teams as statistical models are used as opposed to arbitrary alegbra. But I am biased. Someday, I will do a really complete comparission of the methods.

I believe it is current here. Neither Wisconsin nor Clarkson were that high at the end of last season.

The top 10 in Rutter:
<code>
Team Rating RPI.Rank RPI
1 Minnesota 3.4150 13 0.3000
2 Wisconsin 1.6566 7 0.4200
3 Clarkson 1.5819 1 0.7352
4 North Dakota 1.4810 12 0.3600
5 Boston College 1.3076 14 0.3000
6 Cornell 1.3011 31 0.0000
7 Boston University 1.2911 34 0.0000
8 Ohio State 1.1482 8 0.4200
9 Harvard 1.0422 29 0.0000
10 Minnesota Duluth 0.9046 11 0.3767

There is a Red Sox game on and exams to grade. Weekly post has moved down the priority list. Starting a new thread now.
