Discussion on Coaches Developing Players (copied from Princeton thread)

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

I'll get a new thread started with the announcement of the incoming freshman class: http://www.goprincetontigers.com/Vi...75&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10600&ATCLID=204937382

Anyone have any first-hand info on any of these players?

The best word I can think to describe Rose Alleva is very. She is small, but is very quick, very fast, very offensive, very aggressive. She isn't afraid to make the first pass and jump into the rush. She is a good get.

I have watched Denna Laing over the years on the various Assabet teams. She has always been a strong forward. Her sister is an up and coming 94 birth year goalie who was on the u16 team this year.

Sally Butler has good size and is a natural goal scorer with great hands and puck possession skills. She was one of the top forward recruits out of Ontario this year...and a very nice girl too! An excellent acquisition for Princeton.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

First game tonight for Princeton--an exhibition against McGill.

I have no idea what to expect from the team this year. They're picked sixth in the preseason ECAC poll, so expectations don't seem to be high. I expect there will be good goaltending and infrequent scoring, but it will be interesting to see if Paula Romanchuk and Danielle DeCesare, who were high scorers last year, can consistently light the lamp.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

They looked pretty good this weekend. They lost to McGill, allowing two goals in the first three minutes, but considering they had only started practicing a week earlier that's not too bad. In the scrimmage, they shut out Yale 3-0 but then lost to Brown (two periods against each team). Something was wrong with goalie Rachel Weber against Brown--she allowed four extremely soft goals in ten minutes.

All five freshman appear to be ready to go and will be key players. I liked Sally Butler, a big forward, and Rose Alleva at the blue line. Looking forward to the regular season getting started.

Nice win over Colgate tonight. Seguin with a shutout, and both goals by freshmen. The Tigers missed a lot of scoring chances, though. They've got to learn to hit the open net when it's given to them.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

I doubt I'll see a better team all year in Baker Rink than Cornell, but I admired how the Tigers hung in there. The score was one-sided, but they never gave up.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

What's wrong with tigers? Made the trip to Quinnipiac with my daughter and was very shocked with Princeton's play. What happened to the line of Romanchuck, DiCesare, Landry, who have played well in the past? IMO, Not much happening with those two without DiCesare on the wing.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

I think they're looking for scoring from more than one line so they split up their best scorers. It's early so they'll keep working on different combinations until they find what works.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Kampersal is notorious for tinkering with his lines; always has been. But the Tigers do look to have an off-year this season. I don't think they're much worse than they have been historically, it's just that too many other ECAC teams have improved, while they seem to be treading water.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Does Kampersal run the forward lines or does his assistants? Watching from the stands it looks like he runs the defense. I thoughgt that the line changes seemed to be too long. Many times Quinnipiac was able to get up the ice 3 on 2 because Princeton's forwards were tired from a long shift. Several times after icing the puck for some relief, on the pursuing face off the same line stayed out on the ice instead of getting to the red line, dumping the puck and getting fresh legs out there.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

I don't know if he runs them in-game, but I have talked to him in the past when he has spoken of "going back to the lab" to come up with new lines. This year he has twelve forwards--I believe that by the end of the year they will use every possible combination.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

Princeton is just as good as most that they have faced this season. They played very well last weekend earning 2 wins. They have a 2 / 1 lead over Dartmouth with under 2 minutes to go in the game and who does Princeton chose to have on the ice? In overtime the same line that begins the overtime never comes off for over 2 minutes, Princeton loses in overtime. In last nights game against Havard, (who was rankeded 10th in D 1 polls) with under 5 minutes to go and a 2 /1 lead who does Princeton choose to have on the ice? Looks to me they have a nice little team, just need to figure out what player combinations should be on the ice towards the end, especially with a 1 goal lead.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

They did have extra-long shifts over the weekend; that may have been because he was down three skaters due to injury and was using only three lines. I noticed at one point they had trouble getting a change because they couldn't clear the puck out of the zone, a problem they had all weekend.

Great game, it seems to me you're making opposite arguments. In the Dartmouth game, you say he kept the same line on the ice for too long. Then you say that in the Harvard game he had the wrong players on the ice for the tying goal with five minutes to go. What is he supposed to do? He had three lines and five defensemen available. He can't keep his best players on the ice for five full minutes. Which is it?

He did reteam Romanchuk and DiCesare this weekend, but they didn't do much. Lately most of their scoring has come from freshmen.

Re: Princeton 2010-2011

The number of players doesn’t dictate the length of the time any one line should be on the ice. It doesn't matter if your playing with 2, 3, or 4 lines, the longer you spend on the ice the sooner you will fatigue . IMO, the reason they couldn't clear the puck was do to an extended shift after failing to get off the ice sooner when they had the chance.

No opposite arguments from me. In both the Dartmouth and Harvard games I felt Princeton had the wrong line on the ice for both tying goals (which happen to be the same line) and had nothing to do with the length of time they spent on the ice. And in the overtime period against Dartmouth, that the length the first unit (the only line on the ice for the overtime period) spent on the ice was way to long (over 2 minutes), which resulted in fatigue and ultimately a game winning goal by Dartmouth. Again not saying it was the wrong line on the ice, just to long of a shift.

I’m not sure Princetonfan understands the concept of shortening the bench as the game winds down to the 5 minute mark, not to mention under 2 minutes in a 1 goal game. It doesn't mean keep your best five players on the ice for the full 5 minutes, but to keep your top 6 forwards and your top 4 defensemen alternating, keeping your shifts short. If you noticed both Dartmouth and Harvard shorten their benches well before the 5 minute mark, which ultimately work to their benefit.

To restate what I had said before: Reteam in your words, Romanchuck, Dicesare, and Landry which they did last weekend and came away with 2 wins for 4 points and not just Romanchuck and DiCesare. IMO, Stearns works much better in the middle where she played last weekend (2 goals) than on the offside wing. IMO, the team had more balance no matter who was scoring.

You do bring up a good point though: If the freshman line has been doing most of the scoring lately, why not give them the opportunity to start on the PP and not just the last 30 seconds of a 2 minute PP. Or start them in the overtime period?

I believe Princeton is a good team, as good as just about all the teams they played so far with the exception of Cornell, but who hasn't Cornell proved to be better than, other than Mercyhurst. I believe they are much better than their 3-5-1 record shows.
