DIII Coaching Changes

D1 assistant coaching gig from my understanding. Don't want to post the school until they've announced it out of respect to the parties involved.

Wouldn't it be fitting? Crowley following his predecessor at Elmira (not counting Jackson's assistant who only lasted the first weekend)? Considering Cornell's associate head coach was an Elmira great in her playing days it makes sense...

Not sure where Dean Jackson is going but an associate HC or a head coaching gig seems logical. He's been a champion head coach at DIII, was an interim Head Coach at Penn State and now has years as an assistant at a good D1 program under his belt...

No published updates at Finlandia or Canton for their head coaching searches.

Canton did remove the incumbent assistant coaches from the team page this week so it appears they are starting fresh in terms of staff...

I could have sworn that article wasn't up there before I posted my last post...

Kalie Grant, a former SLU player and the assistant coach at Adrian College for the last two seasons takes over as Canton's head coach.

Grant is a native of Potsdam, NY just a few miles down the road from Canton.

This leaves the last head coaching vacancies that I'm aware of as being Finlandia which has been open for what seems like most of the summer and the new vacancy at Elmira.

Finlandia has hired Michael Kuruc as their new head coach. Kuruc was previously the assistant coach at Potsdam last season where he was focused on recruiting and goaltender coaching.

Prior to Potsdam, Kuruc's background was in operations and video footage as both a grad assistant for the King's College men's program and then as a volunteer assistant for D1 Syracuse.

This leaves Elmira as the last head coaching vacancy.

Is he going up the road to replace Dean Jackson at Cornell? And where did Dean Jackson go? All these mysteries at this time of the off-season! Very intriguing! : D:D

Dean Jackson will be coaching prep school girls hockey at the Winchendon School, alongside former Nichols/UMB/Bowdoin HC and Northeastern Associate HC Jeff Pellegrini.

Seems like a huge downgrade but maybe those prep schools pay really well

Maybe he has kids that age? That would make it a great move for their esucation and a very smart family oriented move in general. Much less travel so he would be home a lot more. That doesn't sound like a downgrade to me. It sounds like a much bigger improvement in overall lifestyle.

I like how you have no idea, but proceed to offer up a "maybe" type scenario and end by offering up an opinion based off your made up story - classic!!:)

Wow, did my post go way over your little itty bitty head. Let me explain the point that you missed entirely. There is an assumption that coaching at the D1 level is the ultimate, other than pro or Olympic hockey, which is a whole separate story. A prep school job isn't a downgrade at all for a myriad of reasons. I better explain that word for you too. Myriad means a countless number or extremely great number. Have a nice day!

Nope, I totally understood your response, it was classic Shelfit, just as this one is. You have a nice day as well.

This leaves Elmira as the last head coaching vacancy.

Mike Zanella! How do I know that? Elmira is advertising for their Assistant Men's Ice Hockey Coach. You would think they would make the actual announcement of the head women's hockey coach first before posting for the assistant men's hockey coach position. Mike has never coached women or girls before. Another slap in the face to dedicated women's coaches everywhere, and this slap given by a female AD and her female SWA, but the SWA and Mike have Buffalo State background in common. Shame on you both! Elmira stays true to their pattern of turning to their men's program once again but I have a vibe that this time it's going to slowly have a negative impact on their storied program.

Oh, and regarding Finlandia, good luck! Lmao.

I agree with you that Elmira should have tried harder to find an experienced women's hockey coach but I don't know how feasible it was for them...

On the one hand, you'd think after UMB pulled off hiring Danielle Blanchard late into last summer a program as elite in the division in Elmira should be able to do the same. But what UMB lacks in prestige they more than make up for in being in Boston and having state employee benefits.

Elmira keeps losing coaches late in the summer when a lot of top candidates have already found gigs. Elmira also isn't exactly a very exciting place to live for many young professionals not already tied to the area. There have also been some very concerning reports about Elmira College's finances and future (I've seen reports and chatted with some people who think Elmira is going to end up like Becker and Daniel Webster) that may make someone with other options hesitant...

The above factors combined with the fact that moving the men's assistant over keeps working (the team keeps winning) makes it very easy for EC to keep doing it. Not only is the semester starting soon, the early fall is when commitments pick up, and with their enrollment crisis ongoing Elmira may want the first credible hand they can put at the rudder to keep potential student athletes putting down those deposits and application fees.

Edit: there is a small chance of a swerve in that Zanella may have left for the Nichols College men's head coaching position that also opened up recently. Though my money is on you being correct that Elmira is up to old tricks...

A source tells me Zanella is not taking the Elmira WHKY role but is leaving for a non-NCAA coaching position

Just to throw names out there, I have no indication of any interest by either party:

Rachel Grampp, currently head coach at Buff State. Elmira alumna and from western NY.

Ashley Magill, current assistant coach at Alvernia. Former Elmira player.

Kayla Meneghin, former assistant at St. Anselm and played for the Buffalo Beauts with Erin Gehen the assistant AD at Elmira who appears to be involved with if not leading the search.

Erin Gehen, current assistant AD and volunteer assistant coach at Elmira, stepping in for this season to buy time...

Looks like it's Gopher assistant coach Jake Bobrowski who has accepted the Elmira head coaching position according to his Instagram account.

That's a good hire.

I heard there was a hire but didn't have a name yet just that it was a white male in his 40s from Minnesota. My mind went to Tom Palkowski the former St. Thomas coach before they elevated to DI and that's who I was expecting.

Though now that I think about it, when my source said "from Minnesota" maybe they were short handing "from the University of Minnesota" instead of meaning they came from the state on Minnesota. My state school education at work again lol...

2019 Laura Hurd winner Bre Simon (Hamline '20) will be the assistant coach at Elmira.

The former Piper will be reunited with her collegiate assistant coach from her playing days.
