Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Parents of autistic kids are almost certainly the last people I would go to for information on what causes autism. Too much emotion involved and a lot of really bad information coming from that community over the years. I'm just skeptical. They may understand it much, much better than any other person, but I think I struggle with their understanding compared to the medical community.

Regarding your other point, I think the fact that I am a chem e and chem double major makes me less susceptible to the hysteria around most of these things. Because we tend not to get riled up when we see a "chemical" that is supposedly going to kill you but when you read the science behind it, it only happens in a lab setting with mice being giving tens of thousands of times the doses the average human would consume in a year.

Maybe science is catching up to the parents observations

Could be. But I'd reread the last few sentences before the pay wall kicks in.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

fascinating article. Having dealt with a number of autistic/on the spectrum kids I had a question that they didn't directly mention. Many of these kids have significant sensory issues that make feeding them a normal diet very difficult. They will refuse certain foods or if forced will even gag or vomit. If they are born with a predisposition for a messed up gut then does the microbiome cause sx to perpetuate the dysbiosis? As I said, truly fascinating!

Very little is known about the function of bacteria in our bodies. They out number our bodies cells something like 100 to 1. As someone who has used diet(to change my microbiome) to battle an autoimmune disorder I'm convinced they are heading in the right direction looking at the function of bacteria in our guts. But its just observation at this point, hopefully it will be more than that in the future.

I have a friend who specializes in 'GI health'. She used to be my student and has far outstripped me in knowledge. She treats this stuff for a living. I send people to her all the time. SOme patients it dramatically changes their life. Others- nothing happens, even when when they are fanatically faithful to dietary changes and supplements. Even tho she is doing this for yrs she can't explain why sometimes it works and other times it doesn't

Thats the odd part about it, I'm lucky it worked for me or at least so far. MY GI will you me and everyone else diet doesn't matter but I don't see that way. I was on biologics and now I'm not so you tell me

Your GI is a fool. Of course it counts.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

My company got involved with this group called No Barriers who in turn is aligned with FitBit and they were/are giving away FitBits if we signed in with our employee email address and then confirmed it like you would a password reset. Well, I now have a free FitBit Flex coming my way within the next week or so, and I was on the verge of buying one just a few weeks ago. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

Also, I'm down just a titch over 90lbs since February 18. Things are rolling right along.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Started back on p90x now that I've recovered from the injury. I forgot how much of an ***-kicker Plyo is.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Measurement check:

37" waist
43.5" hips
38.5" chest
15" neck

Still pushing towards a 36" waist and 41" hips by the end of the year.

As for my weight, I'd like to fall somewhere between 190-210, with 180 the lowest I'm willing to go. Reason I say this is because if I don't stop weight loss where I want to, I fear I'll end up right back into disordered eating.

Measurement check:

35.5" waist
43" hips
37" chest
15" neck

I got my waist to where I want it, now to get the hips down another 2 inches. As for my weight, I'm not even worried about that right now. I don't keep a scale in the house, and my next appointment with the dietitian is on 9/18.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Down to 192.2. I haven't been this low since around January of 2011.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I'm almost to 180(-).

Been between 181 and 183 for a few weeks or more.

Should crack it soon.

Was around 207 a year ago.

The huge difference has been made by adding running to my routine. I used to say that I hate to run and now I find myself pushing myself to go further. I really like it and doesn't hurt that my body is looking much better (slimmer).

I also play hockey twice a week (2 hours each time at a FAST pace) and bike on occasion (once a week or so).

I've noticed that my energy level on the ice is higher and can be sustained for a much greater time each shift. I rarely take breaks because I'm tired - it's usually because it's just the next guy's turn.

I'm honestly in the best shape since probably high school.

Gotta be to keep up with the 20-somethings that I skate with.

Also - was embarrassed to take off my shirt for the first time in my life when I was 200+. That couldn't be allowed to stand.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

The other part of the equation is my diet. I haven't changed that too drastically, but have eliminated or really cut back on a few key things...

Potatoes - used to have them 3-4 times a week and eat copious amounts of chips with meals and snacks. Now, we rarely have potatoes with meals and I've taken to bean chips, hummus chips and wheat thin type things for lunches. Still have potatoes and chips from time to time, but they are no longer staples.

Candy - used to be nothing for me to go through 2-3 bags of gummi bears or boxes of Mike & Ikes in a day. That kind of candy has always been a vice for me and now I simply won't buy it except for a bag/box on rare occasions. Instead, I allow myself a small bag of fruit snacks to alleviate the crave.

Rice - we still eat it and the white stuff, not the brown crap that tastes like dried grass. I no longer fill my entire plate and inch thick though.

Bananas - used to eat one every morning thinking it was healthy. Not so much - full of sugar. Good before a workout but not before sitting at a desk all morning.

Breakfast Bars - got rid of the chewy/sweet ones that raced through my system and left me famished an hour later and replaced them with ones with more grains.

As you can see, it amounts to lowering my sugar intake and coupled with regular exercise has really paid off.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I weighed in today, I'm now officially down 100.3lbs since starting my diet.

Oh, and I'm scheduled to play hockey today for the first time since February 2013. I'm both excited and nervous, just because it'll be the first time on the ice since having shoulder surgery.
