How are you liking using a Forerunner? Just curious... contemplated getting one myself.

I'm up to 5 miles in HM training.
I like it. Seems like the longer I run, the more accurate it is.

Bob, look into Lara Bars, they usually have just a handful of ingredients (dates, some nuts, and fruit juices) with no preservatives or additives, and are packed with a few hundred calories in just a few ounces of bar. The ones with more of a fruit component (lime, cherry, lemon) are great for running since they don't dry out my mouth.
I do like Larabars; favorite flavor is peanut butter chocolate chip. :)

I started the. 30-day ab challenge on Sunday. Sit ups, leg raises, crunches and planking. Each day you do more. Every 5th day you do nothing. I am woefully out of sharp and probably not doing the sit ups correctly but I'm going to see how far into the month I can make it. I do need to strengthen my core so hopefully this will be a good start.

Weight loss.
Shock the system, so to speak. Whatever you're doing for exercise, change it up a bit for your body to adjust. If you're limiting your food choices, swap out some of your food for some other options that will still meet your goals. Or you could look into moving into one of those specialized diets that people love to preach and jump into one of those fads. Maybe you should talk to a dietician. It's often said that losing weight is 80% diet, 20% exercise. Well, the 20% can be handled pretty easily so long as you're not doing something foolish, but it's the 80% that usually give most people fits. Dieticians are often covered under health insurance plans, especially now.

I recently started doing small things to slowly get my legs back into shape, for instance I just started walking 2.4-3.5 miles at a brisk pace each day. Well, this Medifast diet I've been following has me at about 1300 calories/day and I started to get lightheaded recently. I think it's from too few calories for simply adding walking into my daily routine. Yesterday I started making an effort to add more quality calories back into my diet so that I can keep doing something more than just sitting around the house. I'm getting really antsy and want to get back on the ice ASAP, but that's probably going to have to wait until the weightloss is complete and I move into the maintenance phase of life.

On the plus side, I'm down 67.8lbs since February 18.

1300 seems very low, especially for a guy. How does the program help you move into maintenance? I found it very tough - tougher than losing weight, mostly because my metabolism had changed.

I really don't know what the whole process is for maintenance. I can tell you that every four weeks I get an "inBody" scan where the machine estimates how many calories a person burns while at rest, and I can see that my number has dropped ~100 calories since starting the process and losing the weight. The center's people help with the transition into maintenance and help monitor progress over the next full year after reaching the goal weight.

I should note that after a couple days of eating some more calories by doubling the meat portions of my two main meals in the day that my lightheadedness has abated.

Saw 187 on the scale today which I haven't seen in a couple of years and was only seen on the ascent to 207.

5 more to go and then to keep it there!

The other way to do it, if you have an iPhone is to download the Strava app. You have to have your phone on you while excersizing though.

Yeah, I took a walk near my home on Saturday morning and a portion of the trail wasn't listed, but I know the general course of it, so go that approximation. What I thought was about a 1.5-2.0 mile walk turned out to be 3.5 miles. Good to know.

The Medifast diet I'm on came in for a tie at #23, but I'm on a slightly different version of the diet than the one that was reviewed. The reviewers based it upon the 5+1 plan (five supplement meals and one "lean & green" meal), but I'm on the 5+2+2 plan (five supplement meals, two snacks, and two lean & green meals). The base plan is for only 1000 cal/day.

Regardless, I'm doing better than those listed in the test groups, probably because I'm not on the 5+1 plan and therefore don't feel like I'm "suffering" because of it.

1,000 cal/day is insane. I mean honest-to-God insane. I can't see that as a sound method to lose weight. The rebound would be horrible. Your metabolism would slow to an absolute crawl. The dropout rate would be huge.

I know a guy who started on the 1,000cal/day plan, but bowed out and transitioned into a different routine entirely a few months into it after he started getting dizzy from simply standing up. I just started getting that same sort of thing happening, but I was already taking in more calories, and I'm sticking with the core of my plan while adding in a few calories. Since I've done that I've not had any problems.

Yeah, humans, even morbidly obese humans, simply cannot survive on 1,000 calories a day and expect to function in present day society. It's just infeasible. You're effectively starving yourself. I just can't imagine getting all the vital nutrients you need on 1,000 calories.

I know this to be true because I tried it on myself, all while training as a long-distance runner. My clinical depression led to anorexia. My skin turned pale, my nails were brittle, my energy levels took a nosedive, and my hemoglobin levels dropped to 6. It wasn't until I spent a day in the hospital that I woke up.

When this picture was taken in October 2009, I weighed 146.4. My parents cried over me, my doctor was furious with me, and I felt the Team in Training nutritionist wanted to bring me home and feed me.
