Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Parents of autistic kids are almost certainly the last people I would go to for information on what causes autism. Too much emotion involved and a lot of really bad information coming from that community over the years. I'm just skeptical. They may understand it much, much better than any other person, but I think I struggle with their understanding compared to the medical community.

Regarding your other point, I think the fact that I am a chem e and chem double major makes me less susceptible to the hysteria around most of these things. Because we tend not to get riled up when we see a "chemical" that is supposedly going to kill you but when you read the science behind it, it only happens in a lab setting with mice being giving tens of thousands of times the doses the average human would consume in a year.
I don't believe they are saying it causes Autism, they are saying eliminating certain foods and or additives helps with symptoms

Also, in my own experience, my GI or for that matter most MDs know very little about nutrition, so I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the medical community as far as what food does or doesn't do.

I guess I'd take an MD's opinion over the vast majority of those not in that role (fully admitting there are plenty of quacks with an MD on their wall). Obviously if someone thinks that certain compounds in a food make them react a certain way, go for it. If it gives them relief even if it's a result of the placebo affect, who am I to say "no"?

I just don't buy into most of the information that passes as food "science" these days. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Rush University, Umass med school are or have done studies on eliminating foods for Crohns and colitis. I believe they are doing it for autism also. Results are encouraging from what I've read but they are limited studies.

Double blind I assume?

No kidding. I can't wrap my mind around the runners that keep a 5:30 minute mile pace for a half marathon. Not sure I can sprint a 100m at 10mph.

The winners at the Boston Marathon finished in about 2:10:00, roughly a 5:00 minute mile. From what I've seen, most of the elites are small people, whose body type allows them to run long distances at such a pace.

From what I've see, they're all nuts.

Come to think of it, I played hockey with a guy one night where we had a 90-minute ice time. His dad was playing that night with us and when someone mentioned that the guy (not the dad) was skating well that night, the dad replied that he ran Grandma's Marathon that morning. Nuts.

I've tried to start measuring my food more and I can never figure out - are suggested measures for serving sizes pre-cooked or cooked? For example, I have a 6oz piece of fish. After I bake it, it could be 4oz.

When I shop and purchase meat/fish/chicken, I separate and package as individual portions since it's just me. I'll weigh it before I wrap and freeze and try to keep each portion in the 4-6 oz range.

Suggested measures are for cooked portions. Generally, whatever you're preparing will give up some water weight while cooking.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Well done. I finished my first 5K yesterday at 29:14 officially, which wasn't chip timed so I was probably a bit under 29:00 considering I took a bit to get through the starting line. Considering I went a week without running because I was sick (and was still somewhat sick) and it was about 84 degrees I was happy with it and helped raise money for a good cause.

I don't know what kind of crack those 5K winners are doing but to finish around 17 minutes is just absurd.

I ran XC in high school, which consists of 4-6 miles of training every day after school and a 5K event pretty much every week. Best time was an 18:47, but I have my suspicions that course was measured short. Averaged low to mid 19's. Weighed 115 pounds going into college.

Now I run a 5K pub run Anchorage puts on most Tuesdays and I'm lucky just to get through the thing.

Lil ran 16:18 for a 5 K (or somewhere close) ran 50 mi a wk all spring and eats like a vacuum cleaner. The kids that are elite in the state are running 15 something. Kind of crazy.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Rode 20 miles yesterday and did hills today while pulling my kid in the bike trailer and gained 3 pounds since Saturday.

W T F !?!?

Yeah, I know, but I want the instant gratification of incremental progress...
You should weigh yourself at the same time each day, say just after your assumed morning visit to the defecation chamber. Create as standardized of a pattern as you can, and only then will you know if you're truly being successful or not.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Yep, stop getting on the scale more than once every 2-3 weeks. I abruptly cut quite a bit of sugar out of my diet a couple weeks ago, but expect my body to take another two weeks to adjust its metabolism enough to start making any noticeable differences.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I hope I'm smart enough to keep it off if I ever get to where I'm hoping to.

At 44, it's been a lot harder losing weight than I thought it would be.

The deceptive part is that I'm in really good biking and hockey shape. I can go and go and not get fatigued. Keep up just fine with my 15yo - full disclosure though is that it's no-check. I'd probably wear down real quick if guys were leaning hard on me.

Still though - aerobically, I'm pretty darn good.

Just can't get the flab around the waist to go away/firm up.

cardio causes your body to retain water to aid recovery.

supposedly, 3,500 calories = 1 pound. so unless you ate about 10,500 calories OVER your daily required intake for those few days - it's not fat.

like the others said - back away from the scale. weighing yourself after a rest day is more likely to be accurate.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Yeah, I've been getting my *** kicked with P90X coupled with soccer and things like mowing the lawn (in my defense, my front yard is sloped so it makes it more difficult) and am only down a pound or so. But the daily fluctuations are so wild that it's hardly accurate. As long as I see a trend downwards eventually, then I'll be happy.
