Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Artificial sweeteners are actually appetite enhancers. The more you have of them the more you want food. Agree with DC that whole food is better. Also sit down together and plan menu for the week. It isn't that you can't be flexible but when you are tired if the plan is in place and some prep has happened you are more likely to follow thru.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I was wondering if I could get some good advice from you guys. My wife and I have been hitting hard at the start of this year with a new workout program. I'm determined not to give up like I usually do. I've gotten some success, but my wife is stuck in neutral and she's really upset. She has PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian syndrome) where all of her weight goes to the middle. It also makes it insanely difficult to lose weight and to get pregnant. (Something we've been trying to do for almost three years.) She's been going to the gym, doing special workouts that my friend (a personal trainer) has assigned us and she's been eating better. However, she gained an inch and it's been really upsetting her. What does she need to? Does she need to different exercises? Cut even more calories? I've been trying to look up stuff, but I get conflicting information. What should I do? I feel guilty for being more successful than she is. I want her to keep pushing through because I know it'll change for her soon. Thanks in advance.

I've said a couple of times on here that I think wonders of the Whole30 program and the pale diet as a whole. If you've tried pretty much everything else, why not give this a shot. www.whole9life.com.

It looks really interesting to me. The one problem my wife has is that she has to take a bite out of some the food they serve her. (She's a Head Start teacher, so she has to eat and set a good example for the kids.) She's wanted to try it, too. However, that gets in the way. I do appreciate all the advice you guys have given me. I'm willing to do anything to get healthy and hopefully have her getting pregnant. (She had her child from a previous relationship two months premature.) The PCOS has mentally drained us. It's a fight, but I won't stop loving her.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I'm having trouble with maintenance (hit my goal last May, went about 3 pounds lower, then 7 pounds higher and seem to be stuck there - I don't like how my clothes fit), so I made an appointment with the registered dietitian at my gym. I did the whole weight-loss thing without any "official" guidance or plan, so it'll be interesting to get the opinion of a professional. They offer metabolic testing, too, so I'm probably going to do that. Has anyone done metabolic testing? Was it helpful?

I like Ellie for all the reasons you posted; I have "The Food You Crave" and use it often.

Compared to "Hungry Girl" Lisa Lillien, who is essentially the low-calorie version of Sandra Lee...

Lisa Lillien is exactly who I was thinking of when I said "fake" food. Why eat fake food, when you can still be healthy while eating REAL food? and her style REALLY annoys me. I never did Weight Watchers, but their cookbooks are pretty good, too.

I'm certain if you cut Lisa Lillien open, she'll bleed Splenda.

The herb is not that sweet. It doesn't become 300 times sweeter than table sugar until after refinement.

Honestly, taking your coffee black is not that hard.

Yeah, the problem with Stevia is that they market it as an all natural sweetener. Sure, stevia is a plant, I'll give you nature there, but the process it undergoes to become a sweetener is hardly what I'd consider natural.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I went through what (at least superficially) sounds like the exact same scenario a few years ago. Now I'm the proud papa of a 14 month old :) Unfortunately, there's no silver bullet in terms of a magic diet or exercise. My $0.02: Diet is 90% of the battle, and you can quickly undo any exercise benefits if you don't watch what you eat. My first suggestion would be to actively and HONESTLY track all calories you both eat for a few weeks. Keep a food journal, make note of everything you eat, and track your calories. I was astonished by my calorie totals when I first did that. Second suggestion: if you haven't already, make an effort to replace processed foods with real foods, and to cut down on fast food/convenience foods. From a caloric standpoint, you can eat more (in terms of volume) and feel full without blowing up your calorie total for the day. Third - drink lots of water.

From the exercise side of things - help her find an activity she actually likes and do it with her (long walk after dinner, dancing in the living room, whatever).

I can endorse that approach wholeheartedly (pun intended). It's all about caloric and carb intake. And logging most definitely helps.

In November 2012 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I immediatly changed my diet by counting and logging calorie and carb intake, switched to less processed foods, and ate more veggies. I've never been an exerciser, and I'm still not. In 6 months I'd lost 50+ lbs and the diabetes went away. And after 14 months I'm down by about 85 lbs. I'd love to lose about 20 more, but if not, I'm content where I am.

And low carb does not mean no carb. A no carb diet will cause muscle loss. Controlled carb intake is the key.

This was the biggest key for me, too. Not so much exercise, since I was already doing that, but HONESTLY tracking every single thing you eat and drink. It is hard work. And everything I've read says men tend to lose weight more quickly than women, so she shouldn't get discouraged if you're losing and she's not. As long as she's developing healthier habits, she should see results.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Finished Biggest Loser: Cardio Max. Lost more than an inch off my waist and hips. I'll know more about pounds lost when I step on the scale February 6.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I had my metabolic test, and my RMR was pretty low (especially for someone my height). Online generic calcs are anywhere from 500-1000 higher than my tested RMR. Anyone have experience with the whole eat-more-to-weigh-less thing? The dietitian didn't mention it, but it seems like that may be a good avenue to get things back in check and working efficiently. I'm going to check in with my GP just to make sure everything's OK, but curious if anyone else has experience with this after decreasing calories for a prolonged period.

Turns out I only lost two pounds. But since my doctor's appointment, my measurements are as follows:

41" waist, down from 43"
46" hips, down from 48"
14.5" neck, down from 15"

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

Since Bob posted measurements, I'll do the same. This is from the start of the year.

Chest: 46" down from 48"
Right arm and left arm: 15" up from 14.5" (lots of lifting)
Waist: 41" down from 45"
Hips" 43" down from 46"
Right thigh: 24.5" down from 27"
Left thigh: 24.5" down from 26"

My wife is also seeing breakthroughs as well. She's down 5 inches around the waist. The difference is night and day for us. We used to dread working out, but now we love it. One of our friends is going for personal trainer's license and she's been helping us with 3-month challenge. We started with 30 people and we're down to 6-7 of us that are doing things every day. My wife and I also go to the gym 5 days a week despite work, kids and life. It's not easy, but we've made the commitment.

That is awesome. Keep up the good work!

So much for staying off the injured list. Today, I tripped and fell while running, and now my left knee is swollen. I pray it won't require surgery to repair.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

After a visit to the doctor: Knee is swollen and bruised, but not broken. A few days of R&R should fix it.

Also, found I lost 12 lbs in the past 20 days; I'm sure it's a combination of running and Biggest Loser: Boot Camp.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2014: I Want It Now

I cut way down on my cardio (down to 3 times a week, including hockey) and increased strength work. I like it (and I like the results). Now I just need to stop being intimidated by the machines.
