Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've always been "big" (hence the Moose nickname). Well, my father got an iPhone maybe a year or year and a half ago. He added the calorie counter app, and lost 20+ pounds (he wasn't as overweight as I am). Well, my phone died in late December, and I'd been eyeing an Android phone for a while. When I saw that it had a similar colorie counter app, that sealed the deal. I've never tried to cut calories or diet in any way, shape or form. In fact, my diet, looking back, was pretty atrocous - at least 2 or 3 reglar sodas a day, no breakfast, which made me more hungry for lunch and dinner, fast food 3+ times a week (lunch and dinner) plus numerous snacks all totaled likely 4000 calorie days.

Well, just after the new year (in fact, looking back at my calorie counter app, I ca tell you it was January 3rd), I started a 2000 calorie day. I quickly found that I could get by eating less than that, since I was eating 100 calorie snacks between meals, and smaller calorie choices for entrees. Anyway, I know that I've been averaging 1500 calories a day for a month and a half (likely less than I should be eating, but hey, I'm not hungry - I'm not gonna force myself to eat), and I've lost 30 lbs.

My initial goal was to drop 45 lbs. and keep it off. This quick loss has been encouraging, and that it has been easy to change my eating habits. I do realize that it will take a life-long change if I want to be healthy (I started at over 315 lbs.), but I've got the support of my family going for me (my wife is working on counting calories too). I think it's way too early to reacess my goal - I'd love to just get to 275 before rethinking anything.

Just thought I'd drop in a note here. Glad to see others working on being healthy too!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

For some reason, the 8 hilly miles today felt a lot harder than my data would suggest. Interesting. It was cool, but I've run colder, and had some wine last night- but just one glass.... Quite a few in my group felt the same. Well, some days are good some are bad.

BTW, for those of you who will be in SE Mi in June, the Dexter Ann Arbor 1/2 marathon is really cool- it runs along the Huron River. There are also 5k and 10k races that day. We just signed up for the half.

And I FULLY encourage racing on vacation. If you'll recall, Mrs Alfa and I did the Paris-Verssai (sp) 16k last September- started under the Eiffel Tower and finsihed just down the avenue to the palace. Pretty sweet. This year, we look to be running a half Marathon around the city of Monza, Italy the week after the F1 race- starts and finishes on the track. And running is a great way to see some really nice highlights of an area. Very, very cool.

And I love reading stories of you all doing cool runs/races like that.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

There were a couple of guys in there who looked like runners.

There was also a pregnant woman, and she was doing better than I was, but it was my first class so, yeah, I'll be stiffer than the rest. My upper body is tight as a drum plus I'm just plain fat so I can't bend over like I'd want to, when sitting with my legs out.

My goal is to be fit for marching/Highland Games season...I carry the heavy bass drum (the competition bass player has the lighter one, because it just plain looks better compared to my older metal one with the faded head logos) and I need all the help I can get for parades and massed bands. Stretching and strength will help, as will cardio for stamina.
Which festivals do you attend?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've been trying to figure out my shoe size so that i have something to go on other than a guess for athletic shoes and dress shoes.

I've tried the Brannock device (feet measuring device) at two places and it looks like it says about 10.5 D... which appears to be normal width... my feet have usually felt tight in a standard width shoe.

If anybody here knows about shoes that'd be helpful or if they know where I can seek out some insight about this.

Different brands of shoes, like hockey skates, can vary a bit in their sizing. For example, Nike always fits me tighter than ASICS or New Balance. I think it's less an issue of shoe "size" as opposed to shoes that comfortably fit your own feet. I think that's why it's important you buy shoes from a place that actually has people who can help you figure out the appropriate shoe for your feet, activities, etc., rather than dealing with some HS dropout at Shoe-O-Rama. Be thankful too, a friend of mine has a foot that's just under 1/2 size different than her other foot. :D

Blah... I was more hoping to get one decent size fit rather than dealing with the myriad of hunting down stores... This stuff is complicated as it is.

I've always found that it depends on the brand. I'd always heard that Nike's run narrower, but I don't know if I believe it, because Nike's have always been the brand of athletic shoe that has fit my foot the best, and I have wide feet. Every once in a while when I'm trying them on, another brand fits really well, and I'll get that, for example, right now I have Reebok. It is always tough for me to find decent shoes, since I have size 15's, all of the big sizes are usually some obnoxious shiny basketball shoes, which I hate. For work shoes/work boots(**** kickers), I always and will always only go with Red Wings, and they fit great...every time.

edit: Red Wings run 1/2 - 1 size bigger than athletic shoes. I wear a 14E or a 14 1/2E in Red Wings, depending on the individual shoe

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Part of my routine last night was 3 sets of 10 deadlifts @ 75 lbs while standing on a bosu balance ball. They sucked a little bit, but it wasn't hard or painful at the time.

I honestly feel like someone stabbed me in the back repeatedly today, that's how sore I am.

why would you do that?

Just seems like a good way to end up being hurt though I'm glad it worked out for you.

It wasn't my idea - it was my trainer. I generally trust him not to hurt me. It honestly wasn't that bad. I didn't lift it from the ground or put it back down- he handed it to me and took it back, so it was more like a squat with the added back extension at the top. The first set freaked me out a little because of how much my legs were trembling to correct my balance, but by the third I was used to it and it wasn't bad.
