Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Don't think of it as what you need to "give up", that's a good way to fail. Just try to balance things out as you go.

This. I went to a friends party yesterday, and they had make your own pizzas and a taco bar (plus all the deserts you could need and more). So I ate way too much :o . Today and the rest of the week, I'll do better  ...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Same here! That's why I'm balancing out the disgustingly greasy birthday food I'm going to have on Thursday by eating really cleanly the rest of this week.

Exactly; I'm not a fan of any diet that forces you to give up anything.

It is all about moderation. You can treat yourself once in a while and that makes the treat extra sweet. Also, it is about getting more active. I've tried to get out and be more active and it's helped.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

(it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle)

(it's not moderation, it's the fact that my body doesn't need that much)

and I still eat too much, too...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Yup. Exactly.
Yep. Today I had regular lime jello and a blue raspberry slushie and I'm not freaking out over it. That being said, once my colonoscopy is done tomorrow, I can't wait to get back to lots of fresh fruit, veggies, and crackers.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

my coach has decided that my back squat sucks too much so we're switching to a linear progression on the front squat which is currently at 150. That would be only 10 pounds more than the overhead press single (140) I did on Friday.

To be fair, my back is just collapsing on the squat so while dropping all the way back sucks it needs to be done.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

So close to Level 1 for my CrossFit Affiliate that it's driving me crazy. I have three requirements left, but since you're allowed to fail 2, I only have to hit one of the following 3:

25 Wall balls (10# to 10' target) unbroken
2000m row in 9:40
7 rounds of Cindy (5 pull ups, 10 push ups, 15 squats) in 20 minutes

I think I can hit Cindy no problem, but finding the time to do it with a coach present and watching is a challenge. The wall balls are out, they're the bane of my existence, I can't even do 5 unbroken. And I've never stayed on the rowing machine that long ever, so I have no clue if I can hit the row or not.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Today is the day I had planned to do my first 10 mile run. I chose today for a big, personal reason. However, the weather isn't looking like it's going to cooperate. :( (It's not a heat thing--it's a severe thunderstorm thing). I'm not wiping it off the agenda until the last minute (and if so, replacing it with a shorter run with Flashy Man).
Help me think here, all--am I just wussing out and making excuses, or is this a good reason to postpone this run a day?

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Here's my dumb question of the day - What would it take for someone like me to do a (short-course) triathlon like this one:

http://www.vacationsports.com/paulbunyontri.html

one year from now? I have been biking quite a bit lately, but haven't swam in any capactiy since high school (I'm 35 now), when I played water polo, and I've never ran at all... What kind of training would be required? Just something that I'm curious about.

You can definitely do it a year form now, thats a ton of time to get ready. You can look at some of the training plans on www.beginnertriathlete.com for an idea of what a good training plan entails. If you played water polo in HS that means you probably have a decent idea of what your stroke should look like, so its just a matter of getting time in the pool and practicing it.

I just heard about this years, so doing it in four days is out of the question :p

Truthfully, the running part is what scares me the most. I think I could go out tomorrow and swim a half mile and then bike 12 miles. Like I said, I did play water polo in HS (and turned down a DIII offer), but haven't swam much more than in a hotel pool since. I still have the form, but if I had to, I know I could swim a half mile. And the biking - I just road 6 miles two days ago, and that was nothing... Then there's the running. I don't think I could run a block without stopping :( Anyway, I've heard about the couch to 5k programs some of you folks have done. Sounds do-able...

Putting it all together would be interesting though.

Yeah, I would try doing couch to 5k now and then work on triathlon training once you finish that progression and are comfortable running. Getting in the pool isn't going to hurt either :)

start with running now. Get a short run in, like .25 miles. If you walk, you walk. Don't worry about it, you're going to be giving this an entire year to get ready. Gradually progress, and I mean gradually. Keep up the cycling and swimming, but start working on running now.

Like I said, I rediscovered Jello and Icee on Monday. Also, I want to try gelato (Italian ice cream); it's lighter, but it's not fat free, tasteless junk.

I'm gonna warn you: gelato is overrated. It doesn't taste all that good.
