Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Dying to get back into things - I feel like I'm losing all of my conditioning.

Spend more time on a bike, or take a spinning class if it doesn't stress the ankle like standing in the pedals. The leg muscles used are generally the same as you use for skating. I think the slide board is more for ROM and flexbility than conditioning.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

We finished in 13 hours 23 minutes. It was an absolutely perfect day - sunny, mid 70's, a light wind and just crazy good crowd support. The locals in and around Madison do an amazing job!

The very abbreviated race report: The swim and bike went great, the run not so well. My wife and I don't race together - we each run our own race but we ended up finsihing together this race which was awesome. She caught me around mile 10 of the run when I was really struggling and then around mile 18 I started to get a second wind and she hit the wall so I repaid the favor and helped keep her motivated the last 8 miles or so.

I'm at home recovering now - feeling pretty beat up but not too bad all things considered. Can't wait to take another shot at this course in 2012!

congrats man, you did great! If you're interested, we're looking at France in 2012. It's a few months earlier, but if you're up for doing an Ironman on another continent, we'd love to have you join us!

Oh can so relate right now. Sitting in a hotel, knowing we have yet to run on this vacation, both of us recovering from injuries, and we are running a half marathon Sunday.

Thankfully, the runs I had before we left were really good. and it's not like I have to finish too quickly- the limit is 2:30. And we do get to run a pretty flat course...

Still, Mrs alfa and I are pretty nervous.

Great job! :)

Used a slideboard for the first time at PT yesterday - I understand that they are training for skating, but it's not really like skating at all. Have to say I'm not a fan.

Maybe someone who is taller and has longer legs gets more out of them? It was way too long for me to be able to "skate" effectively. I just kept sliding forever until I got to the end.

What Scott said. Rest, but be active; stretch, ride the bike, lift weights, etc.

I hear you. I have a half on Saturday, and not only do I have a nagging hip problem, I've got fresh emotional baggage as well. Still, I'm thinking I can do it in under 2:45.

As for fuel, I'm going with gels for this one, but I would like to start using real food ASAP. My only problem is trying to carry it...

Find a way to get the nutrition mix you want into a smoothie, then put it into a beer helmet. :D

I've got to try this!

As for the Old Boys' half this morning, finished it in 2:24:20, using the "low and slow" method. When I was a block away from the finish line, I shifted into high gear, and gave it everything I had. Mom would have been proud.

Dude, you're nuts :)

France would not be a good fit for me - I hate heat and I live in the flatlands of MN. IM France is normally very HOT and it's one of the hilliest bike courses on the IM circuit. IM Wisconsin is hilly enough for me thank you.

Best of luck to you though!

Have you considered Imoo? Heck of a race and much easier and cheaper to get to than France ;) I plan on doing it again in 2012.

Great video of the last finisher this year. Mike Reilly, the voice of ironman, is simply the best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDjAHhZoV0Q

we're doing it as part of our honeymoon. So that's the big incentive for us to do France. We figure that training in Colorado, in the summer heat + the hills will translate nicely in France. As for Imoo, it's on the list. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

I finally hit 250. According to the BMI chart, when I get to 241... I will be officially overweight and not obese. That 9 lbs is going to be hard.

Don't go by the scale; go by how your clothes feel. When your pants fit better, then you know you've made progress! :)

And alfa, here's what we're running for next month:

They feel a lot better. Actually my fiance is mad because she just bought me new pants and they are too loose. I may actually fit into a 34 for the first time in forever.

I'm going to piggy-back these posts to note that I've gotten back on track. I hit 70 lbs. lost this morning when I hit the scale, after a rough month or so. I noted a while back that I gained ~ 5 lbs on vacation, and it's taken me a while to lose that plus the extra 3 lbs to get down 70 overall (I started at 318, and checked in at 248 this morning).

The reason I'm posting after the above is that I haven't checked my BMI number in a while, and I'm officially "overweight" now (6'7"), not "obese." Looks like I need to lose 27 more lbs (221) to reach "normal."

And on the pant size front, I'm down from a 46 to a 38. I agree that you might not see much change, but that clothes will feel looser. I'm to the point where I've got to get basically a whole new wardrobe...

Bob
Its not looking good for next month- besides the half we barely finished, we have not been running on this trip... :(

And that half was tough- so between the injuries and this long vacation, I think we will have to defer to next fall......

Bummer. I was really hoping to run with you, too. Perhaps I'll see you at the finish line?

I've looked at how far I've come with my diet (way of life) over the past few months, and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. I haven't bought any reduced fat milk, cheese, or yogurt in months, am leaving the dinner table satisfied, and have learned to make several things for myself, such as salsa, granola, tortilla chips, bread, etc, instead of buying them. I'm not where I ought to be yet, but thank Parise, I've come so far from where I was.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

doctor appt yesterday. I HAVE NOT LOST ONE POUND!! arghhh.

I'm taking the theory muscle weighs more than fat. that's my story. I'm sticking with it until some of the weight comes off. :)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010, pt. 2: Never Going Back

Got back on the ice last night (with the PT's permission!), which felt amazing. I'm totally out of shape, and it was a really tough practice, but just skating again felt great.

Ankle twinged a couple of times, and it was definitely a little bit hard to be on my outer edge on that skate, but nothing too bad.

so, you're going to lose muscle ;)

If you are exercising and you maintain weight then you've gained. Your cardiovascular is better and your musculature will be that much (even if its slight) better.

I knew I should have cut my hair before they weighed me! ;) :)
