Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I totally disagree about the manager issue. there was a real good reason sanchez could not keep going. second, blame dombrowski. he brought in davis, who can'T field, carrera who can't field or hit, suarez, soria who can't pitch, coke, coke for blank sake, there is only one guy in the bp and that's blaine hardy, the rest are awful. So I blame dombrowski.

the manager has to play someone. they were lucky to be in at all.

Oh, I'll get to DD soon enough. I couldn't do much more at the time, especially when the boss is in my office every 23 seconds or so.

And yes, Carrera is only useful if the name is attached to a Porsche. A 28 year old career minor league outfielder? Ugh.

Better than the derelict that we have. Jeff Jones has been fired by the Tigers on 3 different occasions. And yet here he is as our pitching coach.

Anderson's a really nice guy, but the whole "pitch to contact" thing gets old when the contact goes 420 feet.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

We went through that with Bob Cluck. At some point you've got to put up strikeouts, or teams will end up hitting about .320 off of you, and you'll find yourself with a whole lot of 4-inning starts.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Sparky himself couldn't have managed those buffoons in the bullpen.
I'm not ready to dump Ausmus. I'd give him another year to mature in the position.
Throw all the relievers in the Detroit River.......we know they are incapable of saving anything.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Come playoff time, at least Leyland in 2012 knew his bullpen was crap in Valverde and went to a hot Phil Coke(!?) which got them to the WS. I have no belief that Ausmus can make the same workaround.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

They needed a split in Baltimore. The pitching decisions were mind blowing, but ultimately it comes down to the trades that Dombrowski made and couldn't make.

Do you think Angels fans are having the same discussion about their offense?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

If the situation presents itself ......I expect we will see Sanchez 7th inning and beyond..... for as long as he can be effective.
Beyond Sanchez it will be "Russian Roulette' ....with Nathan, Soria, and the supporting cast.

They should win tomorrow.......but will need to score a bunch on Monday to get to a game 5.
If it comes down to pitching in game 4 we are toast

If they get to game 4, Scherzer has to start. After that, who knows. Maybe Porcello can give you a few innings though his arm seems tired. Verlander would be on full rest for 5. Joba, Soria and Coke are not an option. Bullpen has to Be Al-Al, Porcello, Sanchez, Lobstein and Nathan. Good luck with that!

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Sanchez is most likely not available for tomorrow, but I do expect him to go two in game 4 because Porcello has a history of not getting out of the 6th. I seriously doubt we will se Sanchez in short relief. I would guess albuquerque or well someone else. I liked johnson at the end of the year, he's not good for more than one inning but his stuff got a lot better towards the end.

Carrera cost us a run, and that kind of thing hurt, though verlander was not that hot and was missing his spots by a lot at the end of his stint . With Davis hurt who's gonna play, don kelly?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Okay... we're down 1 with no outs and a man on. Victor and JD with back to back doubles.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Still down 1 after the free pass to Castellanos. Runners on 1st and 2nd... and a pinch hitter for Romine.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Scherzer is most likely gone.
Hunter is hopefully gone.
Victor... Well chances are he won't be as good as this year, but I'd like to have him back.
Bullpen: I don't think it can be fixed. Relievers come here after career years and then have their worst years. If it's not some weird curse from the Ghost of Joel Zumaya, then fire Jeff Jones? He seems to be the only common variable in all of this.

Also, probably need to go catcher shopping. If Avila can remember his name by Spring Training I'll be impressed.

There is one thing I am mad about at Ausmus. Why in the Hell would you pitch to Nelson cruz. are you nuts. the guy get's up with men on, you walk him. I mean he won two of the three games for them. Geez.!

I think scherzer is gone to boston, I hope they re sign v mart. I'd like to see a decent center fielder. i'm confident they will finally address the bull pen and having someone on the bench who is maybe good hit no field would be really good, kind of like oh Delmon Young or somebody.... vice having heron perez be your last batter. Or maybe you use hunter in that role and sign a right fielder, like say, nick markakis.

They might be able to get something for romine.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

I would also try to sign Victor Martinez, but the question is going to be for how many years. Someone is probably going to offer him a 5-year deal. At that point he's likely an ex-Tiger.

Rotation: Verlander, Price, Porcello, Sanchez return. I also think Max is a goner. I don't know what we're doing for a #5 starter. Don't get your hopes up on a big signing.
Catcher: If it's not Avila, they're probably going to try to hand the job to McCann. Holaday is a major league backup. At best.
Infield: Miggy, Kinsler, Castellanos for sure. The key is Iglesias. Suarez needs to go back to Toledo. Romine is not an everyday option for a team that is serious about a championship.
Outfield: Davis, JD Martinez, and ......? I would pass on a soon-to-be 40 Hunter. Same with Carrera. He's a #5 outfielder on a good day. There's a reason he can't crack a major league roster at 28.
Bullpen: Ugh. We're stuck with Nathan for another year, along with Soria. Al Al Al Al and Hardy likely return. But I have no idea where we go from there.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

We are very quickly morphing into the mid-90's Indians. Lots of cracks at the postseason, a couple trips to the World Series, but absolutely bupkus to show for it.

Would also be nice to trot someone other than a reserve light hitting infielder as a pinch hitter in an important game.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 7: The George Kell edition

Preferably one with more than 5 at bats all season. Our last two hitters this season were Holaday and Perez. That's absurd.

Here's the scary part: Perez seemed like a halfway-decent idea at the time. Putting Holaday on the postseason roster while omitting McCann was idiotic. Holaday couldn't hit water if you threw him off of a battleship.

An Indians comparison. Have we sunk that low? I mean at least we have a WS championship in our lifetime (two for me.) Cleveland fans are a special breed (I guess they can't help being from Ohio) but have zero legs to stand on when it comes to comparing to Detroit sports- unless you want to count that NBA championship they are penciling in next year.
