Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Well, he bought Fielder because he knew he needed a replacement for Martinez' bat after he wrecked his knee a couple years ago. Otherwise Cabrera doesn't put up anything close to what he did in 2012.
they most likely would have gone for a 3ed baseman. Whether miggy has the same type of year, well maybe, depends on who was playing third I guess. but almost anyone would be better than Fielder.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Keep in mind that it was late in the off-season when that went down. Late January, IIRC. There wasn't much to be had in terms of a bat. It was either grab a big bat or watch Miggy put up an OBP of .700 while being walked 240 times last year. Look at this lineup without Fielder, Peralta, or Hunter (at the time) and tell me what Miggy would have done. There would be no reason to throw him anything within 2 feet of home plate.

Well that's right it was late but how hard is it to find a 260 hitter with 25 hr's. chase Headley comes to mind right off the top. Now we have so much tied up that keeping the team together will not happen. And we have this plodder at first who can't run, can't hit, and cost 250k per at bat.

btw congrats to the red sox, but I think st louis is the best team anyway.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I think Boston will actually handle St. Louis with relative ease. I see Boston in 5.

Iggy. This is fitting.

Show's over.

Congrats to the Tigers and their fans.

It's not your year when a future gold glover makes an error, a rookie gets a veteran's strike zone against a Cy Younger, and (sorry I can't resist some smack) a promising rally is sabotaged when you get tagged on the azz.

Well, the Bosox proved to be the best in the AL this season. More clutch- offensively, defensively and with better overall pitching- especially the bullpen. Good luck against the Cardinals.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I think the tigers will make a lot of changes in the off season.

1. I think they go after the top free agent outfielder- Jacoby Ellsbury. he will hit first and add speed.I think they will offer big money to get him.
2. I think several of the tigers free agents will be gone- Dirks, Dotel,Peralta, Possibly Benoit, Santiago and Porcello.I believe infante's contract is up. I think they re sign him and they might offer a qualifying offer to Peralta, and Porcello.
I think they should trade Scherzer to Los angeles dodgers. They are losing kershaw and will be looking. Package him with Prince and pay half of prince's salary.
3. Move Smiley to the Rotation
4. Boston is signing another japanese free agent pitcher and so they have a few guys available as well.
5. Get rid of coke and veras, and move miggy to first where it will not be so hard on his body. Then use Castillanos as the third baseman.
6. make Rondon the closer.

sign a free agent pitcher and find a bull pen lefty or two.
Should be an interesting off season, especially right around the winter meetings.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

After bumping around Baseball Reference for a few minutes, this is what I think I've found:

Dirks is not even eligible for arbitration until after next year.

Porcello is arbitration eligible this winter, as is Scherzer. Hang on to your checkbook on both of them, because the cost is going way up on both. None of them are free-agency eligible for a couple years yet.

We have a club option on Veras. I think I'd exercise it for $3.25 mil. He can be useful in the pen.

Smyly needs to be stretched out again if we think we're going to use him in the rotation.

Rondon came up with elbow issues at the end of the year. Knowing that, it makes sense to re-sign Benoit, but for how long and how much? He's 36 and not going to be cheap.

Coke can go bye-bye. That's fine with me.

I'm not going to comment on the trade, because no one knows what Dombrowski is going to to do.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

I know Prince is the scapegoat right now, but I think it's worth giving him one more year. It was pretty obvious his off field issues carried over onto the field all year. It's worth betting on his six or seven strong years against this one bad one, especially when they're only going to get pennies on the dollar for him at this point.

The window is certainly closing for the Tigers to win a World Series, but I don't think they need to slam it shut just yet. Next year is probably their last chance though.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

Nobody knows yet. Could be Dirks, could be Castellanos, could be Hank Aaron for all we know.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 6: The Al Kaline edition

He'll hit better than Fielder did in the postseason.

And, not that this is a big surprise, but Dotel had a set back late in his re-hab from what I believe was either surgery or chronic inflammation. For all intents and purposes, his career is over IMO.

Santiago's value declined along with his average in the last part of the season.

I'm high on Peralta still- his bat and infield value will be increased if they cut Santiago loose.

I am also surprised that no one has mentioned another catcher option, either.

Catcher just might depend on what's available when they are able to start talking to everybody. But it would be nice to have some nice young catching prospect come along in spring training that would push Avila for starting time.
