Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

I think the plan had been to limp along until the trade deadline mid july and hope that one of the teams with a good closer would drop out of the race and be a seller. That way they can get a closer for a respectable price. I don't think they ever intended to go the whole way with valverde.

However as it is, he may force them to deal somebody good fairly soon. All these home runs given up are a problem. Today, same deal as before, sitting on the split finger. And why in the heck do you throw that pitch, inside, with that count.? it boggles the mind. I thought his stuff today was better than it's been, but when you make pitch selections like that well...

BTW the bull pen as a whole is the worst in baseball, so it makes it that much harder.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

On Facebook, the Detroit Athletic Company has a question posted: What should the Tigers do with Papa Grande?

I'm so tempted to answer "Introduce him to Donnie Moore"
Had to Google that one. Tempting, only without the whole other messy part of him shooting the wife in front of his kids, and then him ending things in front of his sons, it would be a go in my book.

This is enough to make our ace go to the Brass and say, WtheF. They can't possibly keep Valverde after two blown saves of this variety in two weeks.
I would think the whole starting staff would be going to the brass about keeping Valverde in the Closer spot. About the only thing he's good to do now is pitch BP. I would have to guess that the plan was to kind of limp along with him holding that spot till it got close to the trade deadline where they could shop around for a closer, but hell, at this point I would think they would willing to try out everybody else in the bullpen in that spot on whatever night it works out good for them. Anybody but Valverde. Run him out of town on a rail please.

Austin Jackson activated. Don't know who went down yet.

Tigers sign #1 pick Jonathan Crawford.

Miggy runs right through a stop sign at 3rd and scores.

2-0, top 6.

Something just occurred to me. Bob Davidson is working 1st tonight. That means he's going to work the plate tomorrow night. On national TV. Uh-oh...

4-0 final.

Valverde pitches and nothing spontaneously combusts.

Five Things to Know about Bruce Rondon

Sounds like Rondon has good numbers in Toledo. The point of the article is: Rondon is the only viable alternative to Valverde as a closer; and, we won't know how good he is if he's left in Toledo, where apparently he's too good.

Two roster moves today, with one more to come soon:

Sanchez and Avila to the DL. Garcia and Bryan Holaday called up. Another move to come when it's Sanchez' turn in the rotation, because Alvarez will start in his place.

That better be some **** good orange juice this ump is making. He's squeezing the crap out of Scherzer.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

You know I'm sick to death of v mart leaving runners on. I can't even count how many. I wish to heck he would bat like 8th.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Well Valverde was terrible again and I don't blame people for being mad, even though the game was lost anyway.

I think they have given up on his splitter and if he continues to throw it he bound for a couch, but if he can master the fork ball which he threw today a couple of times for strikes and swing and misses, maybe, just maybe he's not a lost cause. I'd certainly prefer he mastered this new pitch in the minors but I doubt that can be done.
His leash is getting much shorter for sure.

A bigger problem is the continuing issues with the bullpen. We have two viable pitchers out there. Albuquerque is not doing well at Toledo and neither is Villereal. The guys they are bringing up are not major league ready, and though they have talent, are getting taken advantage of. They did a double steal on Reed today on his very first pitch. ! I'm sure the phone lines are being burned up about now. Even if we did score only three runs.

BTW I think Chris Davis is juicing.
