Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Oh, boy. Where to start....

We'll start with last night. Verlander's velocity is down, and it looks like his control is a hair off. I suspect that the effects of all the innings thrown the last 3 years or so are revealing themselves right about now. Now, whether it's only for a few starts, or a season-long thing, or something more, I'm not even going to pretend that I have any idea.

Regarding today:

Every so often, Porcello gets into the middle innings (4th-6th) after cruising early on, and boom, 5-6 runs come in. Today that was the ballgame.

Valverde appears to be shot, both physically and mentally. The velocity is down, and he's got one pitch. It's not too hard to figure out what happens next.

As for the rest of the bullpen, outside of Smyly, Benoit, and (for the moment, subject to change), Putkonen, every time Leyland calls down there, he might as well be ordering Chinese take-out. The bullpen is an unmitigated tire fire. Jim Price mentioned this afternoon that both Villareal and Albuquerque are nearly matching their major league numbers when it comes to strikeouts and walks. Things are not exactly getting better for either one of them.

Chris Davis: I wonder the same thing, but as an aside, the one that really makes me scratch my head is Jason Grilli. After a career of being a long reliever/mop up guy, all of a sudden, at 38, this cat comes out throwing mid-to-high 90's and is pitching like Mariano Rivera?? Sorry, I'm not buying it. That one doesn't pass the smell test.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

You know I'm sick to death of v mart leaving runners on. I can't even count how many. I wish to heck he would bat like 8th.

I would also like to see him drop down. It's mid-June. It's not early anymore.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Ortiz singles in what probably is the game winner, largely due to the fact that Coke can't hit a cow in the *** with a snow shovel when it comes to throwing his fastball.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

That's gonna trigger another whiny column about Comerica from Pussylips Henning.

PERALTA!!!

Which leads us to......

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

When Peralta got that fastball up, as the pitch before, I think he was looking for a slider away as the next pitch. Bailey has been having trouble with the fast ball and the slider is effective. Huge win, since we have done pretty poorly in the 7th, 8th, and 9th so far this year.

Albuquerque recalled to replace you-know-who. Also, Tuiasosopo to the 15-day DL, replaced by Avisail Garcia.

Close play. Correct call. Red Sox runner was safe.

Question - when did Comerica open? The announcers were saying how Ortiz has more homers there than anyone else in the AL and how odd that is given that the Red Sox are in the AL east. Ortiz played for the Twins but I don't know if he ever played for the Twins when Comerica was there.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Comerica Park opened in 2000. Tiger Stadium closed after the 1999 season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Strike zone tonight at least three inches wider than usual. mostly outside. seems to be the same for both teams and doesn't matter lefty or righty.

not my favorite deal with a rookie in there who is wild.

You know, people can boo all they want about Victorino trying to throw guys out at 1st from right field, but these plays are closer than many realize.
