Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Tigers draft Jonathan Crawford with the #20 pick.

6-1, 205 RHP out of Florida. 21 years old.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

If the Tigers lose Peralta for 50 games, how much is that going to hurt them?

You guys know better than me, what kind of adjustments do the Tigers need to make, if any?

If Peralta goes out, that's trouble, plain and simple. There's no easy, or cheap, solution.

Regarding the offense, first things first. Austin Jackson needs to come back healthy. That's been a big drag on this offense. But there's nothing we can do about that.

As for adjustments, two come to mind. First and foremost, Alex Avila needs to start hitting, or we've got to make a change behind the plate. Either Brayan Pena, or Brian Holaday in AAA-Toledo, or James McCann in AA-Erie, or a trade, or something. We've gotten no production whatsoever out of Avila so far. That must change. Secondly is the DH position, directly behind Fielder. Martinez is simply not producing enough. Maybe a short-term answer is Tuiasosopo, or someone else, but Martinez has yet to really pick things up. Given his age and his injury, there's plenty of reason for concern.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Valverde terrible again tonight. looks like they are sitting on the split finger which doesn't do much. If he can't get it to do more, things are going to get worse. But we really have no one to call on instead, though I wish we did. The whole bullpen needs to be better if we are to win in the fall.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Anibal Sanchez has a stiff shoulder. He'll miss his next start.

Jose Alvarez is being recalled, presumably to take Sanchez' next start as a spot-starter. Dotel to the 60-day DL.

There still has to be another move on the 25-man roster to make room for Alvarez.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Just in case you're sitting in front of the television (like me right now), Kevin Ziomek (2nd round pick of the Tigers) is pitching for Vanderbilt against Louisville on ESPN. He gave up a run in the bottom half of the 2nd.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Rod just got done telling us how good the Tigers are at scoring runs with 2 out......

and we immediately leave the bases loaded with nothing to show for it.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Three run double from Prince.

Carrasco is going to be at 60+ pitches thru 2. If he didn't cash in there, we lose. You can't leave 6 on base, score only 1, make the pitcher throw 60, and expect to win.

Now it's up to Ricky Bobby to give us some innings.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

We're lucky that didn't end in disaster.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

So did that one...but Omar dropped it.

EDIT: Base hit, my aching ***. Omar should have gotten an error.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Okay, you knew the Indians weren't going to get a close call after Francona got run.

6-4 final.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

And now Phil Coke is clowning the hot dog singer. He's nuts.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

That's 6 out of Alvarez. And that's plenty. The kid did a nice job.
