Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Someone help me feel better about this Torii Hunter signing. Dude's a career average hitter, and almost as old as I am. And I've been known at "geezer" for 6 years already. :p

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Tigers sign Torii Hunter. 2 years, $26 mil.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

What would we have to give up to rescue Giancarlo Stanton from the Jeffrey Loria Everything Must Go Liquidation Spectacular?

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

It's a bit steep for my taste.

As for Stanton, the bidding starts at Castellanos and Smyly.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Either Torii Hunter is secretly a relief pitcher and never told the Twins and Angels about it, or he's going to combine his offense with Fielder and Cabrera to score so many runs even Valverde can pitch a couple complete innings.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

That's our 2-3-4, with Martinez hitting 5th, if healthy.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Watching MLB TV, and for the life of me I don't see why the analysts are talking about how Verlander should win the Cy. To me, it's David Price.

And no, I'm not sandbagging.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

He has to. I can't imagine our window being open much further than next season.

And, as usual, you were correct. I am not surprised as Price did earn it. Verlander had too many of those erratic first inning type games and the WS meltdown didn't help.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

I wish they'd quit ****ing around and get the announcement over with. I've got to be at the arena in less than 10 minutes.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

I think of all the possibilities out there Hunter was by far the best.

1. He hit well this year because he was in front of Puhols, so there is reasonable expectation he will hit well next year in front of Cabrera. Even if it's not 300, it's a big upgrade..

2.He can run. he's an upgrade on the bases and in the field over Boesch.

3. he will teach the young guys how to play the outfield.

4. he's great in the club house. Great. Way better than guys like Reyes. this is the biggest plus if you ask me.

yes he's old and at the end might be done, but for three years he should be ok.

He's proven he can hit in the American league too and is a weapon for sure. It's as big an addition as Martinez if you ask me.

Now sign Sanchez and get another BP arm.

that is all...

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Miggy wins. Going away.

What a relief!

The way some of the talking-heads were spinning it on radio and TV this week, I thought Trout would win.

The writers got this one right!

But, I think future MVP candidates are going to be subject to a lot more of the "new wave" analysis from here on.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Probably. The combination of a triple crown winner and the "Sabr choice" being a rookie overwhelmed him. Crusty old men look for excuses to not give a rookie an award.

And frankly, I'm still bitter about 1987 and how that's keeping Trammell out of the HOF, so screw everyone else anyway.

Wow, look at the names on that ballot: 1987 AL MVP Voting

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 5: The Hank Greenberg edition

Now the rumor mill is all over Stephen Drew to the Tigers, and Peralta on the trading block.

I was quite happy about the Hunter signing, except for the money. I'm on the opposite side here. No thank you to Mr. Drew, at any price. I'd rather have Peralta. Drew can't stay healthy, and his family is known for having more drama than Broadway.
