Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Thank God that was foul. Inge would have thrown it to the wrong base.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

So...........we're going up against a guy who's 4-14 with a 5.56 ERA.......in AAA.

He's going to throw 7 1/3 of 2-hit ball. You watch.

You forgot the part where Porcello goes 4 1/3 and gives up 5 runs on 9 hits.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

And then the Detroit media whines about how he got no run support.

Okay, 2 runs through 6 1/3. Kinda-sorta close.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

These guys, dare I say it, look like a playoff team.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Stop it. I've done that in the past and it bit me squarely in the 'cheeks.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Porcello was atrocious in the first two innings and got bailed out by a terrible team. It was nice to see him settle down and finish with a quality start though.

Funny you should mention that. Karsch and Anderson looked up the stat on what starter gets the most run support. You guessed it, leading the pack with Scherzer next, then Verlander, then Penny. Not enough starts to rate Fister yet, but based on this four starts, he wouldn't overtake Porcello.

But, like MaizeRage said, Porcello gutted out a good performance based on 3 dp's, including that gift to the mound to start the 1-2-3 with the sacks juiced. The lineup is contributing offensively up and down, the defensive mistakes have been limited and the bullpen looks solid. I just wish the Skip would go for the jugular in the close games, though. Playing not to lose right now will not work.

Today's game is on Fox (the network) with Mario and ... Bert Blyleven?

6-4 final.

Justin Verlander: 20 wins.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

20 in August!

Though not the greatest outing ever. Dang but the Twins liked fouling pitches off.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Not to look too far ahead, but the Tigers (73-59) are only 1 game behind the Rangers (75-59) right now in the race for the second seed in the AL and home field in the first round of the playoffs. I'm not hearing much about this race, but Verlander pitching at home in games 1 and 5 would give the Tigers a much better shot at winning the ALDS. If the Tigers and Rangers end up tied, the Tigers win the tiebreaker.

Eh, Verlander is bound to have the occasional game where he's just merely human. I think it would help his confidence more to have a bad game like that for him to get to the 20 win mark than to pitch another gem where most of the time the infield guys are just siting around scratching themselves and watching to see how long a No-No goes.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Maybe Inge should have taken a check-swing 3rd strike. Thank God we had it tied before he came up.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version

Oy. Remember this time last year when we thought resigning Maggs for another year was critical for the team this year?
