Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 2 - The Charlie Gehringer version
After the rain delay, the Tigers made 13 outs, 8 of which were via the strikeout. It's tough to get anything going offensively when you can't put the ball in play. Ironically, I didn't think Betemit's at-bat was terrible. Those pitches were right down the heart of the strike zone; he just sucks and can't hit them. Avila's at-bat with the bases loaded was absolute horse****. He's batting 1-for-18, the pitcher has just come into an extremely tight spot, and Avila bails him out by not waiting for a strike. I understand not wanting to a waste a decent pitch, but if you get up 2-0 in the count with the bases loaded, you're going to see another good pitch.
In the 9th, Santiago makes a nice play by not trying to do too much to get on, and the next three guys try to swing out of their shoes when, if just one of them can get on base, the best hitter in baseball comes to the plate with a runner in scoring position. If you want to break a slump, force a pitcher to pitch with a 2-0 count every once in a while rather than swinging at every ****ing pitch.
