Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Home opener. I don't want to burn that much PTO in April.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Speaking of Opening Days, Spring Training games started yetserday. For whatever reason, the annual game with Florida Southern was replaced with Southeastern, an NAIA school also in Florida. Looks like it was a close game, 3-2, until the bottom of the 8th when Detroit put up 10.

Across the league there don't appear to be as many college vs MLB games this season.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Josh Harrison is going to be our everyday 2B, it looks like.

The defense is fairly well set to start the season. Candelario, Mercer, Harrison and Miggy in the infield. Stewart, Jones and Castellanos in the outfield, and Greiner behind the plate. Not a bunch of upside from what I see, and not much depth yet behind them. A few placeholders in there. I think we'll start to see the kids next year (Castro, Lugo, Cameron, etc).

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Apparently we served up a moonshot to the opposition this afternoon. The reaction from our manager:

Ron Gardenhire on Cozens HR: “Our people in our offices were ducking. And they didn’t have to, because the ball went over them.”

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

This is exactly why I don't think we're going to see much improvement, if any, in the standings this year. Nothing has really been upgraded, and this rotation was already paper-thin before today. We're not going to see much of an influx of personnel until next year.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Gordon Beckham has made the roster over Ronny Rodriguez. Fine. I'm not going to get sweaty over the 25th man on the roster for a team that is probably looking at 95 or so losses.

Jacoby Jones and Drew VerHagen both likely headed to the DL. Not as big a deal on VerHagen. I'm not going to concern myself too much on the 4th or 5th best reliever in the pen. Jacoby Jones, on the other hand, is a bigger concern. He dinged his shoulder the other day. We're already thin enough in the outfield, and Jones was a question mark in the first place. They've already said that Daz Cameron is going to Toledo to start the season, rightfully so. But who is going to play CF now. That's kinda important in this ballpark. The Mikie Mahook Show doesn't exactly dazzle me.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

So. The Opening Day roster is out. 3 position players on the bench not including a DH, and 8 relievers. Oh, with an injured centerfielder and an unproven rookie catcher. This pitching staff frightens me. Spencer Turnbull starts the season as the #3 starter. That should tell you all you need to know. Our rotation consists of Zimmerman, Boyd, Turnbull, and......oh dear.

On the other hand, this is probably the last year we're going to have a bunch of fill-ins on the roster. The kids should probably start to arrive next year or even late this summer. Daz Cameron is my guess to be the first position player. One of the shortstops probably gets here next spring, and hopefully Kody Clemens can pan out at 2B, but he's a little farther away right now. The Beau Burrows-Kyle Funkhouser contingent probably starts to show itself next year as well. We're squarely in the middle of the rebuild. It's just a matter of time before (if?) the kids start to arrive.

A healthy Miggy would help immensely, but at 36 in a couple weeks, I'm not exactly holding my breath. I take some consolation in fact that the Royals are not going to be good, the White Sox are rebuilding, and Cleveland has question marks as well. I'll defer to others on the Twins. I simply have not followed what they're doing at all. Are we going to contend? Hell no. But there are some games to be had in the division this year.

68-94, good for last place, but we're probably less than 20 games out by the time it's all said and done.

Jack Morris, of all ****ing people, just jinxed Zimmerman.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Perfect game busted up after 6.2. Clean infield single. Harrison had no chance to throw him out at 1st.

Zimmerman's thrown 70 pitches thru 7.

And they pulled him already. I get it's Opening Day, but that type of pace could take you into the 11th.

I don't know if I'd let him get much past 90 on Opening Day, but I certainly would have sent him out there for the 8th. If we were into the season for a bit, I would have left him out there until further notice.

I got the feeling that Sugar Shane is going to squander this thing in the 9th.

2-0 final in 10.

2:55 game.

Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 10: The Tommy Bridges edition

Well, we're not going to have any pitching drama tonight. Boyd gives up a triple on the 1st pitch. He's lucky it didn't go out, and Mahtook only misplayed it by about 8 feet.
