Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

Ummm..... Yeah, that's just stoopid football right there. Ball would have rolled into the endzone to bring em up to the 20. Gotta be aware of where you're at on the field.

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

.....I was unable to catch the game on Saturday, and while preseason means very little, I thought there might be some banter from some fellow "Lions slappies" going on here ? I can only guess it's the numbing effect of the Millen years.. :(
6 wins is all I'm looking for this year.

I think the offense is going to be a ton of fun to watch.

I think the defense will drive everyone to drink. That front four is going to have to be superhuman to make sure the other seven guys don't get torched play after play.

I'm convinced that they're a linebacker short, and at least two short in the secondary. They've got manpower in the defensive backfield, but none of them are any good with the exceptions of Houston and Delmas. I just don't think they have enough serviceable bodies at LB.

Same here, I still think the Lions should have passed on Best and gone after another LB, they easily could have picked up another RB in the later rounds. Joique Bell went undrafted, was a local kid that played at Wayne State, and would have really made for good feel good story for Mr. Irrelevant. Everything I've been hearing about him is that the Bills fans love him.

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

No. They needed a running back, and they needed one now, and they weren't about to gamble on a D-II kid. To rely on Kevin Smith's knee is foolhardy at best (no pun intended). It was just going to take a couple years to restock the cupboard. This year it was RB, DT and a CB in the first 3 rounds. Next year (or whenever the next draft is) it's likely to be LB, CB and another OL, maybe with a safety thrown in there.

The Bills fans can love Bell all they want. He can look pretty on the sideline with C.J. Spiller on the field.

You couldn't be more wrong. Emulating the Bills is about as bad as it gets these days in the NFL.

Yes, I am self-aware here.

I've seen Bell once a year for the past 4 years, he's been one of the most legit guys to come out of D2 in a long time. And there are plenty of D2 guys that are in the NFL right now. Only reason why his stats weren't better is that Wayne State never had a decent QB who could make teams respect the pass enough. He's a Gamer.

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

Fine, but the Bills liked him so much they went and drafted CJ Spiller in the top 10.

I'll believe in what Mayhew and Schwarz are doing for the moment.

It doesn't matter if he's the greatest DII player ever, you can't draft him and expect him to step in and be the guy right away. Go ahead and draft the guy, but you have to expect to develop the guy for a little bit, just because it will take some time for him to adapt to the NFL game. The difference between playing Tech/Ferris/GVSU and playing the Patriots and Dolphins is just way too huge. Just to emphasize, I'm not saying he won't be a great player, just that you can't expect him to be that player in his rookie year.

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

Here's the other thing. In general, teams don't develop running backs like they do offensive tackles or quarterbacks. If the RB can't do it by the end of year 2, he's headed for the bottom of the depth chart, or the scrap heap, a lot faster than a QB or OT. You can be a QB or a lineman at 33 or 34 and play in this league. A 33 or 34 year old running back is like a 15 year old Dodge Neon with 180,000 miles on it; there's not much left and you're on borrowed time at best. Teams aren't interested in bringing a RB along for 3-4 years. More often than not, if the kid can play, he'll play on Day 1.

The Lions are not in the position to draft and slowly bring along a RB. They need one, and they need one yesterday, if not sooner. They're not going to dink around with a D-II guy when they were in a position to go get one of the top RB's in the draft at the end of the 1st round.

Again, Buffalo got their running back in the top 10 in C.J. Spiller. If Spiller stays healthy, Joique Bell is a footnote. If Spiller doesn't stay healthy, Bell fills in until Buffalo drafts another back in the 1st round in 2-3 years.

I'm not saying the Lions could have drafted Bell with the Mr. Irrelivant pick with the idea of him being the featured back. They easily could have signed a retread RB who's still has a little left in the tank and used Joique to spell him some, third downs, and goalline situations, along with contributing on Special teams. The Defense was what was needed to be upgraded the most and a solid LB in the second round would have helped to shore things up there on the D. That would have helped to keep scores close, and let us figure out just really bad we would really need a new RB, Kevin Jones's knee could turn out to be fine, might not, but we're not going to know that until the season gets underway.

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

I think they might have a legitimate beef. I've seen the NFL take $10,000 for worse.

Yeah, easily a fine. But you do gotta love that instinct. You don't think opposing QB's won't see that play in film review and have that sitting there in the back of their heads when they play the Lions?? ;)

Re: Detroit Lions 2010: Let's do our Best to keep our Johnson in our Schwartz, okay?

Hey Lions fans,

I'm from the northeast but will be in Detroit on September 19th. I will have a lot of hours to kill as I will probably arrive from Ann Arbor (where I'll be attending UMass @ Michigan football game on the prior day) around noon and my flight to Chicago (where I'm going to a conference) isn't until about 7 pm. Being a sports fan and having never been to Ford Field, I figure I'd like to check out Lions vs. Eagles. I've got a few logistics questions. I apologize in advance if any of these are dumb -- this is my first trip to the midwest *ever*.

1) I assume that I can just walk up to the ticket office and get a ticket. Is that correct assumption? The prices listed on the ticketmaster are $48 for the cheapest. Are there any discounts, like for students? Basically, I just wanna catch a game and see the Ford Field as cheaply as possible (I am on a grad student budget).

2) How long does it take to get to Ford Field from the airport and what's the best way of doing that? I couldn't find any public transportation options... are there any? If not, what would taxi cost from/to the airport (I am taking Michigan Flyer from Ann Arbor to DTW)? Would it be more efficient to rent a car at the airport instead?

3) Parking. The Lions website doesn't give the costs to park (if I decide to take the rental car option). What are they? And how long do you guys estimate it will take me to get out of the parking lot? (I will need to get back to the airport around 5:45-ish to return the car and make my flight).

I may have more questions later. Any help is appreciated. Again, sorry if these are stupid...

That's a fine for sure. Blatant, violent, totally in violation of the rules. I don't think it's a sign of the type of player Suh, but it should be fined.

Even though it's the Lions, this is still the NFL. I wouldn't count on any of that, except maybe the $48 price. If I were you, I'd make sure I'd have a ticket in advance. It's the home opener.

A taxi is going to be prohibitive. This is Detroit. They don't believe in public transportation. I think it's roughly just over half an hour. It's very easy to get to Ford Field. What I do when I go to Comerica Park is take I-94 East to US-10 South, and get off at the Motor City Casino exit (the casino is on the right) and turn left onto a service drive that turns into Temple Street. I'll run Temple Street all the way to Woodward Ave (warning: this is not the nicest part of Detroit, here). Which leads me to......

3) Parking. The Lions website doesn't give the costs to park (if I decide to take the rental car option). What are they? And how long do you guys estimate it will take me to get out of the parking lot? (I will need to get back to the airport around 5:45-ish to return the car and make my flight).

There is a VFW hall on the corner of Temple and Woodward, about an 10-12 block walk to Ford Field, which is literally right behind Comerica Park. They've charged $10 for parking, and there's someone on duty there. Expect to pay at least $20 near Ford Field, and I have no idea about how long it takes to get out of that. I know that from the VFW hall, it's back down Temple Street, to US-10 North, to I-94 West, and you're gone.

The 5:45 time that you need to get to the airport could very well be an issue if you stay for the whole game.

$7,500 fine for Suh.

The Lions have cut Jon Jansen and Caleb Campbell, but Campbell is expected to be re-signed to the practice roster.
