Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

Was that in 05? Amherst is way off the beaten track. Im a DU alum born and living in the boston area. IIRC that was also a good friday/easter w/e and umass was a ghost town. The Mullins was barely 1/3. maybe 1/4 full. There were some Bedjimi people there that drove from MN (I salute that dedication). There was a small gathering put together by the university before both games. one was after the final and most of the people there were family of the players.

That year I had bought frozen four tix for columbus but by the time the regionals came around, I knew I wasnt going to make it to columbus. Sold my FF tix as face to a scalper outside the mullen center. As it turns out the FF was all WCHA teams in a CCHA town. Attendence was a big problem and the market for tickets was really soft. I made out in that transaction.

Per News 9 (in NH) the NCAA charter for DU stops to pick up WISCO along the way to Manchester. For some reason I find this really entertaining.

My question is regardless of outcomes do the teams get to fly back together?

In the past DU has chartered with CC and Air Force on board.

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

Viz...it should be a dandy of a game. I think DU is better off going with Sam in net. He's been in this position before and won. Jussi has had a great year but I think he's been jittery the last half of the season.

Love this regional. Truth is the talent level is super balanced here and any of these teams could emerge with a trip to three rivers.

I agree that Sam would be the better choice from the experience perspective--I also think he is playing well enough to be on the same level with Jussi. I heard Gwoz on KOA yesterday afternoon and he seemed to be setting the table for a Jussi start Friday. I suspect he may plan to come back with Sam if there is a second game. Guessing what the DU coaching staff is thinking with goal tending is a futile task--so we'll wait and see.

He did say that Sean did a light skate yesterday and that things went well and it looks like he'll play on Friday. Both UNH and DU have struggled in recent years in the NCAA's. It will be interesting to see how they respond.

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

Yeah, I remember the 9-2 win vs. UNH MANY moons ago, and then the close win in 2005 to send us to the FF. As I recall, UNH scored on a penalty shot in that game, and Gauthier's hat trick gave us the win.

We'll see what happens this time around. Gwozdecky's teams have historically played well in hostile environments, so getting sent to New Hampshire doesn't bother me too terribly much. With Ostrow and Didier back in the lineup, we will be a much deeper team than we've seen recently. Our gifted offensive d-men will likely be the X factor in this series--will they be able to jump into the play, without giving up odd man rushes? The odd man rushes that CC got on that Sunday made me super-concerned. Hopefully Gwoz & Co. have worked that out. Tough, tough decision on the goalie---I think we have to go with Jussi, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sam gets the start, if Sam has been much better in practice this week.

Looking forward to an entertaining game. After all the ups and downs this year, I'm mostly glad that we're IN the tournament. But the flashes of awesomeness that we've seen make me think that we can get to Pittsburgh if Gwozdecky has effectively prepared the team over the last 2 weeks.

Yeah...DU stands a much better chance this weekend if Joey Leggs can be at least even in plus/minus.

Olkinuora had definitely earned, through his overall fantastic season, the chance to prove himself as the man for the playoff push. He then turned around and cast as much doubt about that ability as he had earned. This situation sort of reminds me of DU's drive to the FF in 1986. DU's best goalie that regular season was Tom Allen and he was named 2nd team all-WCHA, then he kinda lost it in the playoffs. That year's second goalie was Chris Olson and he was given the reigns despite Allen's fantastic season and ended up becoming a second team All American based on his postseason play. Now, I obviously don't expect Big Sam to earn such an accolade...the point, however, is that you need to go with who currently gives you the best chance to win (even if it is not your all-league goalie) since a loss is the end of your season.

Something I always tell my kids, rule #1, stay out of the box. Here's to hoping Mayfield, Makowski, and Didier stay disciplined and avoid penalties.

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

Theory: UNH fans are cautiously optimistic at best and disgusted at worse.

Neither. I go with "cautiously disgusted". Or maybe "painfully pragmatic". :o Suspect there are many of us who likely see this as being the latest chapter in our own private version of "Groundhog's Day".

This is a team that was unstoppable before the Xmas break. They anihilated Lowell, looked like they weren't even in the same league. They had the easiest schedule in HEA their last 6 games of the season and only managed 2 wins. Their showing aginst Maine the last two games of the season was embarrassing, their coach failed them. They weren't much better against Providence in the QFs. If UNH beats Denver their fans will jump back on the bandwagon but until then expectations are low.

Any "glory hunting" fans won't begin to surface in earnest until UNH manages to get out of our own (hosted) Regional. Fifth time's a charm, right??

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

I actually rooted for DU and Adam Burkhoe (sp?) at the Garden against Maine for the NC a few years ago; that final 90 seconds of 6 on 3 Maine PP was one for the ages.

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

Cloud9 answered the 2 threads I found questions with....nice job! If Wyer had the Pioneers number in the 3rd last time, any thought that Umi will give him a go? As we've all seen WCHA teams play the more physical style vs. Hockey East teams, who transition faster IMHO, it will be a fun, great game to watch! UNH cannot give the DU player coming into the zone any room, they've got to stand them up....not give them the space they gave Diamond vs. Maine.....good to see familiar names from Denver in the thread. :o)

I was there, too. I won't ever forget that one. I watched it again on DVD a while ago...crazy with the shots banging off the posts, etc. We had some good karma or something that night.

I agree. They gave Providence a lot of space as well. I feel the D needs to step up a little sooner. They need to be a little more physical.

With a loss it should certainly be the last chapter (and latest) for the current coaching staff ...... the story line is old and tired and in need of a 1st edition.

Re: Denver vs New Hampshire 3/29 NCAA Northeast Regional

DU only has 12 forwards but the line combinations will be significantly different than when DU and UNH faced each other in November. Back then DU was dressing 11 forwards and 7 d-men. UNH will see 6 of those 7 d-men except Dakota Mermis who left in early January for London in the OHL. Levin, Loney, Tabrum and Doremus had DU's 4 goals in November. Goumas and Downing killed DU in that game with 2 hat tricks. FYI, Goumas played Middle School soccer with one of my sons.

The line combos in November were:
Levin-N. Shore-Knowlton
Loney-Q. Shore-Tabrum
Larraza-Ostrow-Doremus
Arnold-Allen

The likely line combos Friday are:
Q. Shore-N. Shore-Knowlton
Larraza-Ostrow-Loney
Jacobson-Doremus-Tabrum
Arnold-Levin-Allen

Jacobson was serving a team imposed suspension when UNH was at DU in November. I would expect Gwoz to roll three lines with the 4th line getting some occasional shifts. The latest line combos have been pretty effective.

I agree with what you're saying about Gwoz rolling three lines. The X factor will be Shawn. If he is hurting, I expect he'll shuffle the deck with Doremus getting more ice time. Bottom line is DU needs Shawn to be involved/productive to get the win.

Wouldn't expect to see him on the ice unless DeSmith gets lit up, Wyer hasn't seen regular playing time this year and I'd really question the sanity of any coach who healthy scratches their starter in this situation. This is only a theory, but perhaps some of Wyer's success vs Denver was the D stepping up their game knowing they had to protect a back up? I was only following on radio and missed the early part of the game so can't say for sure.
