Denver at tUMD - Friday 2/1/13

Re: Denver at tUMD - Friday 2/1/13

Denver began the season by compiling a 9-1 record. Here's a look at the teams Denver played, their records entering this weekend and the places they occupy in the PWR.

Lowell 14-7-2 8th in the PWR
Air Force 11-9-5 not ranked in the PWR
Mich Tech 7-12-4 not ranked in the PWR
St. Cloud 15-10-1 9th in the PWR
Mankato 16-9-3 16th in the PWR
Colo. Coll. 10-14-2 not ranked in the PWR

Only two of those teams--Lowell and St. Cloud--would be guaranteed spots in the NCAA tourney based on their current placement in the PWR. Since no team in the Atlantic Hockey conference is ranked in the top sixteen teams in the PWR, the Atlantic Hockey post-season tournament winner would dislodge Mankato from the 16th spot in the PWR and thereby gain a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Yes, Denver's 9-1 start to the current season seemed impressive at the time. However, given the performance of those six teams since Denver ran roughshod over them the Pioneers' start to the season has lost considerable luster. It may be that four of those teams do not earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Re: Denver at tUMD - Friday 2/1/13

Between period piece: Features UND's Huffer Christiensen who won silver for the US in Sapporo. Great, frequently overlooked US team that beat everyone except the Soviets. Mike Curran of ND made over 50 saves (many on his lips) in the win over Czechoslovakia, which wound up being the silver medal game.

Turning point in the game came midway through the 3rd. US leading 3-1. Center Vaclav Nedomansky had Curran dead to rights in the slot. Fanned. Took a second shot. Curran stuffed it. And on the next rush up the ice, USA scored! Could have been 3-2. Instead, 4-1. Stick a fork in em.

UMD PP coming, Jay doesn't know who the DU penalty is on yet.

Viva got a 2 minute for a cross-check and then a 10 minute misconduct for complaining about a horrible call.

Viva for cross checking. Homer nerd says it's a "bad call."

Now UMD player gets a cross check. 4X4 then 5X4 for DU

UMD now getting a penalty, it will be 4 on 4, then a short DU PP.
