Re: Dead!!!!

Shirley Temple Black, 85.

Seems to me that when I was a kid she hosted some kind of fairy tale playhouse on tv. What's odd is that I would have sworn she had died years ago. I guess we just haven't heard much from her in quite a while.

I think that it was called "Shirley Temple's Storybook".

It's hard to conceive how big she was. No TV, cable, internet. Just movies. Depression. And here's a little kid literally carrying an entire studio on her shoulders, captivating the nation, leading at the box office, known to every single American. A completely different time and place. Yet her name and image is a permanent part of our culture.

Ah yes...the Party of "Tolerance"

That said...I'm not a fan of articles like this where they do a twitter search for hateful tweets.

Just vile. Politics shouldn't enter the remembrance of an entertainer unless they ran for something. IMHO if you get your political advice from an actor, then you aren't looking into the issues hard enough.

Re: Dead!!!!

I think he's likely got a ways to go before he makes his debut here, but Tom Brokaw has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

Re: Dead!!!!

Today's comics for the most part pale in comparison to Sid, Mel Brooks, Phil Silvers..the list is endless
RIP :(

We lost a comic genius-anyone who has the chance try to find any old clips of 'Your Show Of Shows' and enjoy.:(

Not to take anything away from Sid, but if you look at the team of writers he had, anyone could have been a comic genius.

Or was it his genius that made the writers so good?

I'd venture to say more the latter, but point taken. IMHO his contribution was much greater than Stewart or Colbert to their success.

NYT obituary. Caesar, his manic behavior and his program were the inspiration for "King Kaiser," in My Favorite Year.

Another classic bit (which Doc likes) about the German general. Double talk on display. For film buffs, think of Lee Marvin putting on his gun fighter gear in Cat Ballou, and you'll see where they got the inspiration for that scene.

Thanks for the post OP-one of the great bits from the weekly 90 minute show. Years ago they compiled what many thought were the 10 best into one collection and released them as '10 From Your Show Of Shows'. His show along with Milton Berle and the Texaco Hour pretty much were the reasons that most TVs were sold back then. Allegedly the streets were deserted when those two shows were being broadcast.

Remember, Uncle Miltie was so popular NBC signed him to an insanely long term contract (30 years?) as an insurance policy against him popping up on another network. IIRC, they wound up paying him for many years where he wasn't even on the air. He also hosted an immensely forgettable show involving celebrities and bowling. "Honey, check the mail box, I'm expecting a check from NBC. I'll deposit it on my way to lunch at the Friar's Club."
