Suddenly I started to think about Antonino Rocca, Killer Kowalski, Yukon Eric, Gorgeous George, and more recently(for me anyway) George 'The Animal' Steele. Occassionally I can even picture the Zebra Kid, the Inayas(Hurricane and Tornado as a tag team), Sailor Art Thomas, Haystacks Calhoun, June Byers, Mildred Burke of course The Fabulous Moolah. Gosh it wa great being a kid and watching those folks back in the old days-I thought every match was real. Way back then they even had best 2 out of 3 falls!!!

Don't forget Lord Layton, The Sheik, Pomparo Firpo, Baron Von Roske and Bobo Brazil... and right before or after wrestling they had the Women's Roller Derby, too.

The Roller Derby...good times. I am a LITTLE younger; I grew up with Andre The Giant, Macho Man, Hulk, Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff, etc as a young'n, and followed rasslin' up through the Stone Cold Steve Austin/Degeneration X era. Ah, nostalgia.

Know these names and a host more-but they were from much later in my life-when I lost interest in the sport completely. As a kid though-I lived and died for the shows on TV which in the early days were hosted by Dennis James. In later years i had one of the more famous wrestlers as a patient here locally in NJ. His name was Scott Charles Bigelow. He wrestled under the moniker of Bam Bam. Got to know him a bit during the height of his career and saw him go through all sorts of trials and tribulations in his personal life. In private, you could never tell his wrestling persona-he was quiet, demure and incredibly respectful as a patient. You just had to see him standing next to Jenny who is 4'10" and perhaps at the time 94 pounds(he was at least 6'4" and over 400 pounds and looked every pound of it). He died at the very young age of 45+ under circumstances that I won't list here.

Roller Derby!!!!!!! Now that was a fun afternoon's entertainment. Leo Seltzer's San Francisco Bay Bombers with Charlie O'Connell, Joanie Weston, and Ann Calvello-what more could a boy of 8 years old ever want to see!! Jammers and blockers!!!!!

No reference to Joan Weston was official without "big." Dennis James ("okay? okay") was rumored to occasionally crack walnuts into the mic to give a little verisimilitude to the "step over toe hold."

There was a Japanese guy (Mitsu Arakawa?) who insisted on performing a phony sumo ring ceremony, always after the bell, while his opponent snarled and stomped and tried to interrupt it. Japanese wrestlers in those days were always bad guys, but when I was in Japan, amazingly they were the good guys.

Remember that made for TV event where Ali took on Antonio Inoke, the Japanese wrestler? Inoke wisely stayed on his back the entire time, otherwise Ali would have taken his head off. The event was memorable for the very clear audio of Ali saying: "get up, mother farker."

I remember the Crusher well. Great theater, those guys. Who was the guy, Marty?, who they always spoke to when promising death and destruction to others?

There was a guy I remember: The Great Kabuki- he was the one managed by one of the Hart brothers... (Gary) and was the first to blow the blinding dust ("Asian Mist") into opponents eyes. He always came into the ring with Nunchaks to intimidate.

Asian guys were always prone to cheating in some esoteric way. In recent times, they've been replaced by Middle Eastern guys (many of whom, oddly enough, are from New Jersey).

I think you're referring to Mr. Saito who was in the AWA for awhile, tagteaming with Ken Patera. He'd do the sumo stuff sometimes prior to a match.

Don't think it was Mr. Saito. I'm talking about 50's or 60's. But anything vaguely "sumoish" has been used by more than one Asian guy ('course in those days they were "oriental.") There was even a clown who called himself Yokozuna. Yokozuna is the top rank of sumo and there have only been 70 of them in 400 years!

Found this on Mitsu Arakawa. As I said, after the bell rang he always started a phony baloney dohyo-iri ceremony. And it's interesting one of his favorite methods of cheating was throwing salt into the eyes of opponents. Tossing salt is part of the buildup to a sumo match, and symbolically purifies the ring.

UFC heavyweight Shane Del Rosario suffered a heart attack and is clinging to life. There is no brain activity at this time.

"Hellllo ball," is one of the funniest bits ever. Another great Kramden moment came when Ralph's mother in law was sitting at that crappy kitchen table, reviewing all of the "better" guys Alice could have married. Ralph is pacing back and forth behind her like a raging bull. When he finally heard all he could take, he sticks his face into hers and says: "You know, this could be the day!"
