Re: Dead!!!!

Throughout the run of that program (radio & TV) Ozzie was evidently unemployed. No reference to him ever going to work or doing any work. Just hanging around the house with Thorny.

And in those days they never made him look like the fool-sort of Father Knows Best in a cardigan. Today's media delights in making the father the fool as everyone in the household knows everything.

And the sort of peasant, easy going persona he displayed on the show (with himself as the butt of most of the gags) was exactly the opposite of his real role. It was his show, period. And when the time came to push his younger son out there as a teen idol, he made it happen. I recall an episode where Ozzie came on screen to announce "we've got a little time left," so here's Ricky singing his latest hit "Travelin' Man," (complete with rear screen images matching the lyrics). Yeah, network TV scripts frequently came up three minutes short. How careless.

Re: Dead!!!!

I figure you know this, but just so others are aware: No relation to musician Thomas Dolby, who recorded the hit “She Blinded Me With Science."

Correct. Thomas Dolby was sued (unsuccessfully) by Dolby Labs for copyright infringement, but it had been a nickname given him by friends and he used it as his stage name. He won the suit.

Ken Norton Sr.

Gave Ali all he wanted, three times. Broke his jaw.

Norton was a magnificent specimen of humanity. And I recall an episode where he was reportedly doing some road work in Baton Rouge preparing for a fight in New Orleans, when a car load of red necks stopped, figuring they had an easy mark. It didn't end well for them.

Re: Dead!!!!

Jeez.

If anyone wants a good read, pick up "Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America" by Jeff Ryan. Very interesting in how the Japanese business model worked in relation to Nintendo.

Yup. Basically the entire North American video game market imploded in 1983, and EVERYONE was convinced it was just a passing fad and video games were dead in the water. Nintendo had to convince North American retailers that the Famicom (NES) was NOT just a video game system, so they came up with the front-loading cartridge slot like a VCR. They also locked down EVERYTHING with regards to their developers: who got to make games, how many, content, EVERYTHING so to avoid a repeat of Atari where everyone and their brother was churning out crapware.

Re: Dead!!!!

Marty Brodeur's father Denis, 82 :(

Denis Brodeur, the father of star goalie Martin Brodeur who enjoyed a lengthy career as one of Canada's most successful sports photographers, died Thursday, the New Jersey Devils said. He was 82.

He shot pictures of the Montreal Canadiens for several decades, first as a newspaper man and then as the team's official photographer. Brodeur was one of two photographers to capture the iconic image of Paul Henderson celebrating the winning goal of the 1972 Canada-Soviet summit series.

In 2006, he sold his archive of 110,000 photos to the NHL for $350,000.

"In a cut-throat business, he was a true class act," said Ryan Remiorz, a photographer for The Canadian Press who first met Brodeur while shooting Montreal Expos games in 1979. "He was already a legend before I showed up."

Denis Brodeur's career extended beyond hockey. He was also the official photographer for the Expos and shot numerous local sporting events and pro wrestling.

He would bring his sons to practices and to Florida every year for spring training. The family made the lengthy drive to Florida because Mireille Brodeur, Martin's mother, didn't like flying.

In Florida, the family would rent a motel room. Photographers recalled visits to that motel, where Denis would set up a makeshift darkroom, and Mireille cooked for the family on a hot plate.

Like his son, Denis Brodeur was a goalie who won an Olympic medal. He backstopped the Canadian team that took the bronze at the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Games.
