Re: Dead!!!!

They really should have just had a special on 'taters. :)

Actress Eileen Brennan, age 80.

I was really young when I first saw Private Benjamin, young enough that she scared me. She played her role so well that it took a while for me to get over that initial reaction to be able to watch the movie from start to finish.

"This is war, Peacock, you have to expect casualties. You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. Ask any cook."

"But look what happened to the cook!!"

Re: Dead!!!!

She made a lasting impression in a handful of pivotal, but relatively small roles. Like in Murder By Death as Tess Skeffington, long suffering secretary to Sam Diamond.

"Sam, why do you keep all those naked muscle men magazines in your office?"

Sam Diamond: "Suspects. Always looking for suspects."

Or as Genevieve, the waitress in Last Picture Show

"One thing I know for sure. A person can't sneeze in this town without somebody offering them a handkerchief."

Re: Dead!!!!

Longtime Penn State gymnastics coach Gene Wettstone has died at age 100.

Born on July 15, 1913, Wettstone, a University of Iowa graduate who guided Penn State from 1939-1976, coached nine NCAA team champions and a total of 14 athletes who went on to compete in the Olympic Games. The NCAA Championships were not held from 1943-1947 because of World War II.

And certainly made the most out of a very small role in The Sting.

You said it:

Billie: Who told you this guy was in here?

Lieutenant William Snyder: Nobody. I just know what kind of woman he likes. Going to check all the joy houses till I find him.

Billie: Oh, well maybe I could help you, if you tell me his name.

Lieutenant William Snyder: I doubt it. Which way are the rooms?

Billie: Right through there. But I wouldn't go in there if I were you.

Lieutenant William Snyder: What you are going to do, call the cops?

Billie: I don't have to. You'd be busting in on the Chief of Police just up the hall.

Re: Dead!!!!

I forgot that she was in both Murder By Death and Clue (though Murder By Death was a better movie).

You got that right: Neil Simon script. And that cast!

Milo Perrier: What do you make of all of this, Wang?

Sidney Wang: Is confusing.

Lionel Twain: [from moose head] IT! IT is confusing! Say your god*mn pronouns!

Re: Dead!!!!

Clue didn't have a bad cast, but Murder By Death's just isn't a fair comparison - Brennan, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Estelle Winwood, James Cromwell, etc. Aside from what I figured was a deliberately terrible performance by Truman Capote for camp comedy effect, none of them skipped a beat.

Clue had Brennan, Christopher Lloyd, slightly overrated Tim Curry (godd@mn RHPS dorks), underrated Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, and ? These folks were solid comedic actors in their day, but didn't exactly transcend time.

Murder By Death also indeed had a better script and more laughs. Just check out the deleted scenes on YouTube.

Re: Dead!!!!

Count me as one of the incredibly embarrassed people that didn't notice how great Maggie Smith is until the Harry Potter movies. She rules.

Don't forget Nancy Walker, who didn't say a word. IIRC, it was her last role. As to Curry, it's really hard to live up to "sweet transvestite from Transylvania."

In Clue Leslie Ann Warren played the bordello's madam who also traded in DC secrets. She did look good back in the day. I used to confuse her with Susan Sarandon a lot once upon a time. I don't think I ever knew who the actor was that played the butler scheming as the host (dark hair, slicked back, wore all black, killed early on in the show).

Of course, you're all forgetting the best character in the movie. I'm sure mookie would know if he wandered into the thread... :D
