This banged around in my head like Lewis Black's "if it wasn't for that horse" for so long I looked it up. The correct term is "renounced."

You can't "resign" because you're chosen by god -- you don't get a vote. You can't "abdicate" because it isn't a secular or state office, it's a burden - that's like saying "I abdicate from my prison sentence so I can leave now, right?" The papacy is literally what the term "awesome responsibility" was coined for, back when "awesome" meant "holy sh-t! this is horrible" not "this is cool ima post it."

The best thing about a lapsed Catholic atheist is we dig this stuff even more than Scholastics of the 13th century. Suck it, Saint Thomas.

This cracked me up because I literally know no Catholic that believes everything the Catholic church says they should believe. The ones I know go to Mass faithfully but don't celebrate all the Holy Days of obligation, or go to confession. Even the staunchest ones think the pope/priest is fallible, birth control is OK and most of them don't think gay people are going to Hell even if they think they shouldn't be gay. On the other hand... the Baptists around me...

Bit of both. Their parents were televangelists and con artists (weight loss snake oil, pay $50 to get someone's name written in a Bible that supposedly answered prayers, etc.). When they first started their YT channel in 2012, their initial videos were about police brutality and BLM. About 2014/2015, they suddenly made the switch to conservative content, their YT numbers took off, and next thing you know they're getting invited to stump for Dump on the trail.

She's no stupider than Bill Maher -- they are both average people who test well and who mistake their superiority over dumb people as superiority over average people. The 30th percentile thinks they are the 3rd percentile. So in that regard, they are classic Dunning-Kruger, except they are slid up the scale.

She's a grifter who also has a blind spot emotionally because she was taught this garbage at home. Most cons either have that disease or Clarence Thomas "babe in swaddling clothes rescued by nuns" syndrome.

It's how cults happen.
